In the article, “Con Ed Seeks to Advance Clients on Saving Energy”, Diane Cardwell presents Con Edison’s effort in improving their relationship with their customers. Con Edison is on the verge of creating a device that monitors a household’s energy usage. They named this small device Opower. Con Edison believes that once they figure out the pattern of energy usage in a household, they can then suggest the best way of lowering the customers’ bill. Con Edison is: “Experimenting with ways to engage their customers and strengthen their relationships with them while helping them save energy”, (Cardwell B3). Cardwell notes that several other electric utility companies are introducing new products. Cardwell suggests in her article that why should a customer be loyal to Con Edison if they are being offered a better deal elsewhere? Con Edison cannot control their customer’s loyalty nor can they control what other businesses promote. It is out of Con Edison’s hands to permanently keep their customers’ loyal. Due to this reasoning, Con Edison is constantly fighting the battle of competition. They repeated have to find innovative ways to keep their consumers, but it is not easy. The company does find new ways to attract consumers; however, as soon as other companies introduce new products to the market, Con Edison loses customers. The biggest factor customers’ look for is who can truly provide the lowest cost in electricity. Therefore, Con Edison is trying to develop Opower to grasp the customers’ attraction for a long period of time. Customers will easily leave a company after years of working with them if they are offered a better deal, save both money and electricity. As Cardwell notes, there are several other electric utility companies trying to lure new consumers in by developing new products. What Con Edison can do is give their customers’ what they promised, which is lower electric bills. If Con Edison is truly able to achieve this goal, then the company will see significant success in the coming years. By lowing bills in the long run, customers’ will be attracted to Con Edison’s services, and this will increase the chances of customers’ becoming loyal. It will be costly to install Opower inside of thousands of homes. However, the benefit of this device functioning properly and achieving success is a far greater reward. In addition, if Con Edison keeps their promise of proving their customers’ with simple, convenient, and easy services, then this will also aid in the businesses success. The demand for Opower will grow and bring significant profits to Con Edison. However, if Opower does not help in lowering electric bills, then customers will have to walk away from Con Edison and this could destroy their business.
