The real danger is not that computers will begin to think like men, but that men will begin to think like computers. This quote, relayed by Sydney G. Harris, has many meanings to it. The basic meaning that Harris is trying to convey is that one should “open up his/her minds” and realize what is really occurring, not what is being covered up. These days, the tendency is generally for one to think about how one day, computers might be able to think like humans, and the problems that that might generate, but people don’t realize the real problem, which is if humans start thinking like computers, that would be by far more devastating than the preceding.
One of the meanings communicated through this quote is that we, as individuals, must comprehend that we are humans and therefore we should think and act as humans, and not computers. This statement is reinforced by the word danger in the quote. This word makes one think that this reality is, in fact, something that can have a negative effect on him/her or on his/her life. When one notices an abrasive word such as danger, his/her attention is immediately applied and set on the mindset that this is something out of the ordinary, and it is most likely treacherous.
Through this quote, a very extraordinary message is expressed, that of which is that although technology is very beneficial in the sense that it makes life much easier for us, if used inappropriately, it can also be as destructive as it is helpful. For example, a car helps us get around from point A to point B much faster than walking. Over the years, it has improved its durability and safety to better suit humans and their demanding requirements. However, there have been numerous accidents and many lives have been lost due to the automobile. This shows that if misused, cars can cause more destruction than they can help. The same goes for any technology. If any technology is misused, it can cause more destruction than it can help. The destruction may not be only death, but a variety of other things.
Through this quote, Mr. Harris is trying to differentiate between a human’s lifestyle and a computer’s lifestyle. By saying that the real danger is that men will begin to think like computers, he is saying that when we go to the future, we will generally be lazy.
World War II, along with its numerous battles, brought great tension between two of the strongest countries during the 1940s: the United States and Japan. Conflict between these two countries started with Japan’s push past Chinese borders into Manchuria in search of the natural resources Japan lacks. At first, the United States avoided military action with Japan by waging economic warfare on them. This economic pressure included the passing of the Neutrality Act, which prohibited the sale of weapons to nations at war (Nash 513). Additionally, the United States placed oil embargoes on Japan hoping it would force Japan to shut down military operations in China. Japan, at a critical decision point, decided to bomb the American naval base at Pearl Harbor. On December 7th, 1941 at 6 a.m., Japan pilots bombed the naval base at Pearl Harbor, taking out the United States’ strongest battleships, killing thousands of people, and destroying hundreds of planes (Sherman). The day after Pearl Harbor, the United States declared war on Japan. Over the next few years, the United States and Japan fought fierce battles for dominance in the Pacific Ocean. One of the most important battles during the United States and Japanese war was the Battle of Midway. Japan was destroying the United States at sea, until the Battle of Midway gave the United States Pacific Fleet an edge on Japanese forces. The Battle of Midway was the most important naval engagement of World War II: it was a decisive battle that allowed the United States to be the dominant naval power in the Pacific and it marked a turning point in World War II for the United States.
John Horvat II, from “Five Ways Technology Is Taking Over Your Life,” is an illustrator, researcher, international speaker, and a contributor to “The Blaze” website, and also an author of books. The main point from this article is that technology is a bigger problem now, technology is supposed to be a beneficial resource but not to the point that we get handled by it. The author strongest asset is the use of pathos to get to the audience emotions and make them believe that he’s right. The audience of this article are people who use technology in an excessive way, which is majority of the people, so he is basically referring to everyone who have a relationship with technology.
“With every new innovation, cultural prophets bickered over whether we were facing a technological apocalypse or a utopia” (Thompson 9). This quote states that with every significant break-through with technology, people contemplate whether it will have a positive or negative effect on mankind. Technology allows for external memory sources, connections to databases, and it allow easy communication between people. Thompson then directly counters Carr’s hypothesis and states that “[c]ertainly, if we are intellectually lazy or prone to cheating and shortcuts, or if we simply don’t pay much attention to how our tools affect the way we work, then yes - we become… over reliant” (Thompson 18). In his opinion, “[s]o yes, when we’re augmenting ourselves, we can be smarter… But our digital tools can also leave us smarter even when we’re not actively using them” (Thompson
The battle of midway was then to follow, being know now as the most stunning and decisive blow in naval history. The following battle was the battle of Leyte Gulf was decisive in that it destroyed much of the remaining Japanese surface fleet while virtually ending Japan’s ability to move resources from Southeast Asia to the home islands. On Feb.19.1945 in Iwo Jima, Americans invade the island and use it as an airbase to get closer to
Technology is supposed to be seen as such an advancement and great accomplishment. What others may not always know is sometimes it isn’t all fun and games, it can be dangerous. As seen when we created the atomic bomb and guns, their only purpose is to destroy and cause pain to others. Although they are not always in use, they are a constant threat to our well being. We need to take into consideration the positives and the negatives of the technology we create today.
The Battle of Midway was a “four-day sea-and-air battle” the U.S Pacific fleet had completely destroyed the four Japanese aircraft carriers, but in order to do that they had to lose one of their carriers the Yorktown which they had lost to the Japanese navy.
In a time of war when warfighting technology and capabilities are reaching new heights, the status quo for which convention exists is continually changing. At the dawn of World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy was one of the most powerful navies in the world. With little naval presence to deter Japanese aggression in the Pacific, the Imperial Navy would dominate virtually uncontested, aiming to take land that contained vital resources for the sustainment of their country. Then, on December 7, 1941, the Japanese severely overstepped boundaries by bombing Pearl Harbor with the intention of reducing the United States as a threat in the Pacific. With the airpower from six Japanese carriers, the Imperial Navy dealt a blow to the United States that immediately led to a declaration of war on Japan. This event heralded a drawn out struggle between the United States and Japan. As Japan being the dominating power in the Pacific, it was not until the Battle of Midway, starting on June 3, 1942, that the United States gained the upper hand that would later lead to victory in that theater.
In today's world, technology is constantly changing from a new paperclip to an improvement in hospital machinery. Technology lets people improve the way they live so that they can preserve their own personal energy and focus on the really important factors in life. Some people focus their energy on making new innovations to improve transportation and the health of people that may save lives and some people focus on making new designs of packaging CDS. Technology is significant in everyone's life because it rapidly changes what is in the market. But, some new innovations of technology are ridiculous because they serve no purpose in helping mankind.
Due to advances in code breaking technology, the United States was able to decipher a code sent to the Japanese navy, preventing an ambush that was planned with its last few aircraft carriers. Due to this code breaking, the U.S. navy was able to strategically place its ships in an excellent counter-attack setup. U.S. bombers caught the Japanese while they were refueling so they took advantage of the situation and attacked. The entire strength of the Japanese fleet was wiped out. The names of the four aircraft carriers were Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu. This was an important victory for the United States as it put them in an offensive position. “Some historians see Midway as the turning point in the Pacific theater of the war, after which Americans rode straight to Tokyo; others view it as a cusp in the war, after which initiative hung in the balance, to swing toward the Allies in the Guadalcanal campaign. Either way, Midway ranks as a truly decisive battle.” (History.com staff. History.com. Battle of Midway. April 27,
...ism, unfolded in front of my eyes. This way of thinking, not wanting others to have what you have, which is present at large in everyone’s can make you feel superior, but in the end it only causes destruction. The sad thing is that there has been too many Major Ross in this world and they will keep existing. As their hate consumes all that is around them, and their perception of superiority destroys everyone, it shows me that in fact, only those who are capable of loving the undeserving, are the ones that rise above normal people. Anyone can hate, but few go through the trouble of deciding to love.
La Guardia (2009) found “autonomy literally means “self-rule” and refers to actions that are self-initiated and regulated” (p. 92). Autonomy in the workplace provides a greater sense of satisfaction coupled with greater responsibility. Not all employees want to take on the added responsibility for the benefit of freedom. The goal of autonomy is a dream of all children under eighteen years of age, which do not want a boss controlling their lives any longer. Autonomy is an ongoing need in the workplace and in life.
Bennett’s definition of “artificial intelligence” is personal devices that retrieve information for humans, and Ito’s is algorithms that extract data from the internet. Bennett and Ito have different definitions of “artificial intelligence,” but within their articles, they both pose the same question, “Are the dangers of artificial intelligence underestimated?” Bennett sees health concerns, such as brain atrophy, as a danger due to over use of A.I. and Ito sees the amplification of the worst of human society as a
... of the Internet and the Information Age in our lives. He writes, “Information is about to overflow and suffocate reality” (213). With the invention or development of new technological devices or advances every day, this suffocation seems imminent. With the Palm Pilot, the DVD player, with cellular phones that check e-mail and computers that play movies, with all the newer technologies with which I am not yet even familiar, the world seems almost scary. With all of these avenues for accessing, transmitting, and generating information, the pace and the amount of information sent will steadily increase until we, as mere humans, are overloaded. Borgmann makes me aware of the frightening possibility that these signs we rely on to orient and direct us in everyday life will soon become so many that they will begin to contradict one another. Where will that leave us?
There is no doubt that the accomplishments made through technology are astonishing. Technology has made amazing impacts on everything from science in space to medical science to the devices we use every day that make our lives easier. People are living longer and better than ever before, but we can’t forget how to live without it. “Just because technology is there and makes something easier doesn’t mean we should rely on it so much that we can’t think for ourselves,” (Levinson).
Computers have their weaknesses, as they have a negative effect on individuals' health. One of the riskiest parts of any machine is the screen. Computers make individuals dependent. Computers are hampering individuals' improvement in regular life. We don't read printed books any longer, since we can listen and read on the web.
