1. How were you first introduced to CS? How have you continued to develop your technical skills and seek additional exposure to the field? My first experience with Computer Science had to be back in 10th grade when I wanted to learn how to code Java and make neat programs on my own. This was a year before I took AP Computer Science in high school and I didn’t want to wait a whole year to learn how to code, so I followed tutorials I found online and pieced together some knowledge of Java that helped me greatly going into the class. What was so important about learning about Java on my own was that it kept me intrigued on what Computer Science was and kept me dead set on that being my major going into Florida State University. Since then I have continued to develop coding skills and an interest for Computer Science through watching Harvard CS courses online, messing with a Raspberry Pi and traveling to Detroit with TechNole and attending a hackathon called MHacks. Most recently I have been trying to learn how to develop Android apps. and parts of the U.K. Since we are so spread out it is hard for all of us to be together on holidays or to be together as often as we would like, but we do our best with what we have. My mother has always taught me to do my best and to put a 100% effort into every I do. I feel like this best fits my views towards Computer Science as I actively try and learn new things beyond what is taught in the classroom and I always put in my full effort. Since both consumers and businesses advantage from the use of data mining, each party has to honour the right of the other one in order to keep an ethical function of the data mining relationship between the two of them. Long ago, data mining was only about essential and voluntary information collected from customers who were aware that their information is being gathered. Nowadays, the ethical issues raised are whether the data collected will be used against customers’ rights, and whether it will become a part that is accessible in the future by others. The strategies proposed by Payne and Trumbach, with regard to Data mining(1) and consumers’ information, propose that in the right moral structure, data mining can be ethically effective and protective to consumers’ right. Six principals are needed for a productive ethical data mining strategy: anonymity, disclosure, choice, time limits, trust and accuracy of data (Payne & Trumbach, 2009).
I have always been interested and intrigued by computers, ever since using a BBC when I was very young. Since then I have become fluent in writing BASIC and more recently I have learnt HTML, the language of the World Wide Web on which I have my own wesite. My fascination with computers began from early high school when we had introductory computer classes. Further, programming and graphics lessons caught my imagination and soon computers became almost an obsession. This resulted in my choosing Computer Science for undergraduate studies. Artificial Intelligence is the area where I have chosen to set my foot in.
Prior to that, I had a fairly normal educational career. I did well through my high school and worked hard to get undergraduate admission in the field of my interest in one of the most reputed engineering colleges in my state, SNIST, JNT University. It was pure joy to learn how the Boolean logic makes computers work. I enjoyed studying computer architecture and particularly enjoyed studying about microprocessors. I also liked programming in Java. I used to spend hours in the lab, trying out all the programs I could write for fictitious problems.
Many things have lead up to my decision to choose a career in Information Systems. It started at my first semester at my local community college. I was enrolled in their graphic design program and most of the classes I was taking consisted of art classes. My first computer class was working in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. They are graphic programs that many graphic designerÕs use to make their design work. While working with these programs I was very intrigued by the power of computers and how they work. While going to school at the local community college I soon got a job at CitiMortgage working at the computer help desk. I was learning more about computers and networking which helped lead to my decision to change my degree of study to information systems.
Growing up in Africa, I saw little of computers. My high school got its first computer in 2006 only two years before my graduation, and prestigious institutions, like hospitals, limited its use to data storage. Despite their dearth, their flaws, like mismanagement, insecurity and corruption, were conspicuous around me. This birthed and kindled my passion for technology and encouraged me to seek out resources that exposed me to computers as a problem-solving science. I became acquainted with cyber cafés that were remote and costly, but the investment was worthwhile. I started to notice the correlation between computer science and data management and security, and their correlation with other disciplines. As a result, I developed the dream of applying various data management skills and establishing rigid security systems across the various structures in society to enhance the completion of operations. My educational and career goals have, therefore, been shaped by an engagement in interdisciplinary studies that explores how Computer Science can meet the needs of developing countries.
