This paper is based on computer mediated communication, how it transformed the nature of our interpersonal relationships, and what effect it has on the quality of our interpersonal relationships. In this paper, I will be explaining what computer mediated communication is and the form of computer mediated communication that I will focus on for this topic is Facebook.
Computer mediated communication is a process in which human data interaction occurs through one or more networked telecommunication systems. They take place through many types of networking technology and software. This includes email, messaging services, and social networking sites. Key features of CMC include being able to record conversations, formal communication, and user

This made it mandatory for everyone to have a social media account because if you did not, you were left behind. This also enabled a sense of community among users because Facebook helps people with the same interests find each other. For example, a person who loves crochet and amigurumi can finds hundreds and hundreds of groups to join and share their passion and their creations. Facebook is also helpful when you want to ask one of your colleagues regarding a school or workplace matter but you do not have their phone number. Also, if you do not communicate with your friends and family on a daily basis you can use Facebook as a means of getting to know what is going on in their lives. In addition to that, it gives people who do not like talking on the phone another way of communication such as talking through messages. For example, if you wanted to join the Alpha Gamma Delta at UOIT and you did not know anyone from that sorority but you want to join, the only way you would be able to communicate with one of the sister was Facebook messaging. Although one problem with that is the interpretation of your words by reason of not being able to see the tone of the person sending the message. Of course, being that tone can only be heard. Although, social networking sites have helped transform the nature of interpersonal relationships and interactions with others, I feel that it has not really helped the quality of
Furthermore, it is thought that social media lets humans connect with others and have more friends than those in the real world. However, this is not always true. People worry about their online worlds and whether people will like them. Online, people are more judgemental than real world friends, which can lead to a low self-esteem. The article “YES: Connecting Virtually Isn’t Like Real-World Bonding” by Larry Rosen states that “...our constant need to check comes from anxiety…” Obviously, technology has a negative effect on people as far as lower self-esteem and
As technology progress, humans evolve to the advanced technology and enhance our lives via technology. We connect to our families, friends and others through social media such as Facebook. Social media takes up a huge part in our lives. Social media infest us with information that are relevant and irrelevant to us. Marry Marrow wrote, “It was Facebook that changed the face of e-communication; in fact, it was the first electronic social media” (para 1). She assumes that Facebook is playing a huge role in electronic communication. In the journalist Maria Konnikova, “How Facebook makes us unhappy?”, Konnikova divulges many aspects of people on social media through researching and experience, and finds how social makes us unhappy. I agree with Konnikova findings after reading her article. In addition, she concludes that if you are engaged, active, and creative you will not sorrowful on Social media, however if you are passively browsing and defuse to engage, you
Pattakos states that through social media we are, “living alone” (211). I disagree because social media opens the door for the possibility of friendships that would have never been possible before. Before, if a friend were to move away it would be very hard to keep up with them, but now you still have the capability to connect with them. You can also connect with people that you have meet on vacation. Although it is not the same as getting to speak to them face to face, it is still something. They may live in a different state than you so you do not get the opportunity to talk to them often. I think social media is brilliant because it allows you to connect with family and friends all across the world. Life can be really busy and no matter how hard you try sometimes connecting on social media is the only way you
...to Facebook, as well as to many other social media that is found on the web. Social communication online can never replace the true face-to-face communication, and many people justify it.
Over the last century, information technology, such as the Internet, has brought our society forward and helps us get through life more efficiently and conveniently. In addition, it helps making global communication easier and faster as compared to hand-written mails that may take days if not weeks to reach its intended recipient. However, with such luxury and convenience, there is a debate whether the way we currently interact with fellow human beings with the help of technology is good or bad to our personal relationships. The Internet has increased the amount of communication globally, yet ironically the very technology that helps us increase our communication hinders our ability to socialize effectively in real life and create a healthy interpersonal relationship.
allowed people to create a profile and share everything about themselves to the whole world. When social sites first were developed, they only linked people by their name and address. Since sites such as Xanga, Tagged, and Facebook were gaining so much popularity, more users were logging on, and online predators are becoming a problem. These sites are so easy, that it is not that hard for predators to “pose” as another person and trick young adults. It is extremely difficult to differentiate the real person that you are looking for from a fake.
Facebook has turned around completely in the past years due to cyber bullying. Negative comments are made various times on Facebook about how different an individual’s body is from another, social media is a cruel thing due to the fact that everything is opinion based or just plain hatred instead. Facebook has more supervision along with options to block friends that may be causing emotional damage. It has more of a safety aspect rather than Instagram and many other social media sites which are highly beneficial to may users and a good thing about social media. On the other hand media does also play a positive role in today’s society such as, on social media sites tutorial videos are on display a various amount of useful things are displayed, different workouts/motivational quotes, and recipes.
The advancement of internet has paved the way for faster and better communication as well as virtual online interaction. The Internet allows users to connect and communication with family and friends through various social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. People no longer required to meet in person to keep in touch with one another. In the article “By changing my behavior”, the author Sumner (2011) have interviewed his friends about how important the internet is in their
A person’s life is reflected on Facebook. Because so much of someone’s life is on Facebook, anyone can have a sense of what is going on in their life. This is beneficial for parents away from their children in college or just away from the nest. A visual image is more attractive than reading a lengthy blog about an individual's day. With Facebook someone can post albums at a time and can share a special event that just recently occurred. Instant messaging has improved the speed that users can communicate with each other. If they see that their friend is online all that needs to be done is a message with the word “Hey.” Facebook allows for users to connect with friends time zones away.
In the past decade, technology brings huge impacts on social interaction. From phone call to facetime, from blog to Facebook. Advance technology enables us to reach and communicate with people in a more convenient and broad way, no matter how far these people are away from us. Medium of communication are growing. However, some old ways of communications never fade out. And I am going to talk about
Many studies have been conducted on the various features of cyberspace, its connection to social media, and how it influences professional, intimate, and cordial relationships. Although many spectators are convinced that society’s frequent use of cyberspace has taken a turn down the wrong path, cyberspace has opened up many opportunities for professional relationships to establish, such as the relationship between Facebook usage and an increase in work values in Taiwan (Lin, Le, Khalil, & Cheng, 2012). However, contradictory results suggest that heavy use of the internet by people may be a factor of producing negative social well-being (Merkle & Richardson, 2000). In order to fully understand how social cyberspace affects everyday relationships, all forms of interactions must be examined. This research presented will examine the positive and negative effects of cyberspace connections and whether they should be utilized and in what manner.
When was the last time you talked to your friends in person, not over text messages, Facebook or Twitter? In order to answer the question you would have to think about it first. It is not secret that social media is something that is controlling our lives everyday. In fact, it is something that comes natural to society to communicate with others through a screen. Whether it is a computer screen or phone screen, this screen is taking over our lives. In fact, according to www.pewinternet.org , “81% of online teens use some kind of social media. As a teenager, I go on Social media everyday, it is something that comes natural to my everyday life. Also, it is an easy way for me to communicate with family and friends. Bizjournals.com states that, “Smartphone users check Facebook 's website 13.8 times a day, on average, and spend a total of half an hour each day on the social network on their phones”. Social media is taking over our everyday lives, without us realizing it. What if social media did not exist, how would people
Without social media, society would not be able to communicate with people all over the world for various reasons such as business, family, friends, relationships and many more. This is one of the few positive impacts social media has on human communication, which is true. Social media definitely helps many maintain and build relationships. It allows many to speak more freely without being scared to raise their voice. Social media allows people to be more honest, as many would not have the courage to address these situations face to
Communication is an interdependent process of sending, receiving, and understanding messages. The definition implies that the components of the communication process cannot be examined separately. Rather, the relationship exists between the sender and the receiver, as well as the environment of the communication event, must be viewed as a whole. According to this perspective, if any of the components and circumstances change (that is, the number of individuals involved in the interaction, seating arrangements, or the time of the day) the communication event is altered. Communication is an ongoing process; we never stop sending and receiving messages. As we will discover, communication is a dynamic process, a process that changes from one communication setting to the next. Although it is difficult to predict, the ways of interpreting communication, certain components are always present in the communication process.
