“Watch out for that . . . pole.” A student was walking with their eyes glued upon their electronic device, aka their phone. They had failed to notice that lovely wooden immovable pole in front of them. Faces are glued to the pixel screens of technology. Soon no one will even know whose face is whose. Technology is a scary part of college and the Earth, along with sharks, snakes, lions and other creatures that wish to kill anything or anyone, for example humans. College is designed for the success of students, however, technology stands as a barrier between academic achievements. If and when the Wi-Fi crashes, what would a student do? (The student could use the old pencil and paper method if all else fails). What about a computer malfunction? The average student has the attention span of a small Chihuahua . . . “Buzz,” sounds my cell phone. “Wait, where was I?” Anyways, so the internet and cellular devices are a temptation and a dangerous distraction.
“Oh no, the Wi-Fi is down!” exclaims a distressed student. Is that too melodramatic? It makes no difference how far technology advances. No matter the circumstances, the internet can, and will discover a way to break down. Besides the failure of the internet, it could also operate as slow as a tortoise. After all, it is just a wave current floating amongst the air. Say a student has an important assignment due, but their worst nightmare has come to life. No internet connection. People can quarrel that the student can wait for the Wi-Fi connection to be recovered and repaired. That is not always the case. The repair time could succeed to be lengthier than expected. Students need to learn how to control their need to surf the internet or play on their phones. The Digital Age sparked the booming shift towards the media and entertainment for the past few generations. Just spending some time in the modern-day classroom; I have observed several students on their phones. During my high school years we did not have to worry about cell phones or laptops being a constant problem. In Annie Murphy Paul’s “You’ll Never Learn!” she explains the studies of multitasking while students do their homework with the modern-day distraction of the digital age; resulting in a lower quality of learning. I agree with Paul that the digital age is becoming a problem in education, even though educators are leaning towards teaching on a digital spectrum. In this essay, I will explain how a digital age versus a non-digital age is effecting everyone involved in a higher education.

All we have to do is look around us, whether we are dining in a restaurant or sitting in a college classroom, we will see people glued to their smart phones or doing internet searches on their laptops. There does not really seem to be any meaningful social interaction amongst individuals. Have you ever heard of the gruesome Columbine High School massacre? This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school's most easily accessible phone was on the other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could've used to contact the authorities more quickly. The issue we are addressing today is the use of cellular devices in educational facilities. I believe that cell phone use is of extreme convenience, and has academically beneficial aspects, among it's so called "faults".

As time goes by, advances in technology will provide more and more avenues for learning by way of the computer. The Internet has opened the doors of the world and unleashed limitless possibilities in research and education. It may be only a matter of time when the classroom is brought online to all children and attending a school classroom outside the home is a thing of the past. Looking back over the last 20 years, I never would have imagined that computers would come this far and impact our lives so much. Just imagine where they will be 20 years from now.
