Should sex education be taught in schools? There have been many debates over this topic. They say that sex education destroys the integrity of people because they think that sex education teaches students about how sexual intercourse is done. However, sex education lowers the integrity of people by teaching students how to use condoms and contraceptives. The definition of sex education is instructions on issues relating to human sexuality, including emotional relations and responsibilities, human sexual anatomy, sexual activity, sexual reproduction, age of consent, reproductive health, reproductive rights, safe sex, birth control and sexual abstinence. Others may say that having sex education programs only encourages the students to engage in sexual intercourse which then leads to sexual diseases and teenage pregnancy. The truth is that sex education does not encourage students to do it. In the article, “Comprehensive Sex Education Will Reduce the Risks of Teen Sex” by Louise I. Gerdes she states that “...these programs delay teen sexual activity, and for teens who do have sex, they increase condom and contraceptive use and to improve teen sexual health and reduce unintended pregnancy, policy makers should support comprehensive sex education”. Sex education prevents sexual diseases and teen pregnancy. Many that are against this may ask how? Students are taught to use condoms and contraceptives. Kids are becoming more sexually active at an earlier age. Which means kids are in danger to get a sexually transmitted disease or there will also be a possibility for them to become pregnant. Some may say that sex education programs may be dangerous distortions and give inaccurate information. People argue that the message that is delivered to the students implies that it is okay for them to have sex just as long as they are using contraception or condoms. In “Comprehensive Sex Education Is Inappropriate and Harmful” by Christina Fisanick she states “Most parents reject comprehensive sex education, which focuses on promoting and demonstrating contraceptive use.” Parents may be one of the many reasons as to which sex education is not taught in schools. Teaching about contraception and safe sex is a topic not easily discussed at the dinner table. Many parents often do not even touch the subject thinking that their children will just know what to do when the time comes. Yes, I will agree that It may not be an easy topic to talk about it with your parent or for the parents to talk about it with their children. But, not talking about it with the teenagers does not erase the fact that sooner or later that these young adults will have questions and if they are not answered correctly they run the risk of becoming pregnant or getting a sexually transmitted disease. The fact that parents or adults think that young people should be capable of making their own decisions about their sexual health puts teens more at
