The essential of baccalaureate education for professional nursing practice provides the guidelines all professional nurses should follow to achieve the desired outcomes for the degree. Nurses need to have strong skills, knowledge, education for a better practice. In addition, it is essential for nurses to use their critical thinking while collecting and analyzing their assessments.
For Nursing 401 class, I chose the comprehensive health assessment assignment because nurses do patients’ assessment everyday throughout the shift. For this reason, it is very important to master the nursing health assessment of all body system in addition to cultural and spiritual assessment to be able to provide an adequate care for the patients and families.
Nursing assessment is the first stage of the nursing process after establishing a rapport with the patient. The comprehensive assessment for nursing 401 class includes: past medical/surgical history, allergies, current medication, family health history, social history, head to toe physical examination, and spiritual and cultural assessment. It is crucial not to ignore the subjective data while conducting the comprehensive health assessment of the patient. Nurses take care for all ages from birth to death. The nursing care varies depending on the patient’s age, mental and physical condition. It is important for nurse practitioners to not only understand the changing policies regarding scope of practice, but also how to advocate and contribute to the development of health policies (Dzubur, 2015). As nurse practitioner students, we can increase our exposure to political changes to practice by joining organizations such as California Association of Nurse Practitioners (CANP) and attending events such as Lobby day.

Nursing has a long history of being integral to healthcare. However, without flexibility and continual development, it is at risk to stagnate and lag behind other professions. One change could have significant impact in averting, or some would say 'reversing', that negative trend: to raise and establish the minimum entry requirement for nursing practice. Over the years medicine has changed, society has changed, and culture has changed. These changes necessitate a malleable profession that adapts to better respond to increased demands, especially in regards to education. In light of the ever-evolving complexities and dynamics of the healthcare world, the minimum requirement for entry into nursing practice should be a baccalaureate degree.

The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN’s) goal is to prepare future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) that are needed to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work. QSEN focuses on six main competencies; patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics. As we have learned in earlier classes these competencies and their KSAs offer a base to help us and other nurses as we continue our education and become RNs. As we will learn in this class these KSAs go hand in hand with health assessment.
Incorporated into the curriculum of a graduate nurse obtaining a doctorate degree are the DNP Essentials (AACN, 2006). Building upon the Master’s degree essentials and integrating evidence-based practice and quality improvement, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) created the essentials as a set of quality indicators for doctoral nursing education (2006). The DNP Essentials document is made up of eight components deemed necessary for all graduate nurses of a DNP program to possess. Essentials V-VIII will be addressed in this paper.
The second key message focused on the recommendation that registered nurses receive greater levels of training and education. This message emphasized the need for nurses to enter the work force with a baccalaureate degree, or obtain it shortly afterwards. Once again the biggest difference between the two degree plans is baccalaureate nurses will also include the community and population as well as the patient and their family (The Texas Board of Nursing, 2011). Education is a vital piece of nursing and must be completed at every possible opportunity. Educated patients and their families on promoting health and marinating health is a very important concept. Expanding this education to the community and population is a vital step in helping reduce risk for our patients (The Texas Board of Nursing, 2011). The last competency is the nurse’s role in coordinating human information and material management resources for patients and their families as well as the expansion to include communities and populations as ones transition to a baccalaureate nurse (The Texas Board of Nursing, 2011).

The BSN program helps the nurses in many ways including utilizing the process to the full scale and it will encourage nurses to use their skills like educating the patient as we’ll as creating new nurses. Because of the new health care reform, the BSN program will also aid in filling the gap from the influx of patients. The baccalaureate degrees and BSN program helps prepare students for the significant part they are going to play in reinforcing the new healthcare reform. At present, I utilize and develop nursing care plans in the nursing process, even though it needs some corrections due to the nature of my work. The highest standards of nursing can only be achieved through better research and advanced training.
Real time feedback was extremely impactful on my assessment skills as I was given the opportunity to immediately correct or tweak portions of my assessment practice. Receiving immediate feedback and continuously having to answer “why questions” from my preceptor, provided me the opportunity to identify gaps in my clinical knowledge on a daily basis. Reflection and incorporate of the feedback was beneficial as it prevented the repeatedly practicing and adoption of incorrect techniques in my physical assessment technique. Assessment skills that are both practical and efficient are vital for nurses in the acute care setting. RN’s in critical care preform comprehensive head to toe assessments in order to “elicit any abnormal signs to identity and correctly report the medical problem.” (Crimlisk & Grande, 2004, p.3) This learning activity increased the efficiency to which I was able to perform accurate assessments. Accurate and well-organized assessment skills assist with time management, completing an assessment correctly the first time saves time, and time is crucial in the ICU. The BSN is the opportunity to increase the knowledge and understanding of the nursing career. “Nursing is a unique profession because of its synthesis of practice, multidimensional assessment/intervention, interpersonal communication, case management, and resource-linking on behalf of patients” (Jackson et al. 150). I love my work and as a registered nurse I feel totally complete, nevertheless, an advance education as the BSN program, will incorporate critical thinking expertise and leadership skills, required qualities in order to get a better position in the nursing
