Clarisse may be the consciousness of Montag because her questions drove Montag to his profound thoughts as they kept on having a conversation. Clarisse was a very peculiar girl that she has a very special feature which not everybody has. In my opinion, Clarisse is the igniter or a factor of Montag’s enlightenment in the way she made Montag to question his society and life. Clarisse causes Montag to recall a childhood memory in which a wish is embedded. What is the significance of the memory and the wish?
Once Montag was a child, there was a power failure which led to a black out and his mother found and lit a last candle. Then, he waited to have rediscovery for an hour. “One time, as a child, in a power failure, his mother had found and lit a last candle and there had been a brief hour of rediscovery, of such illumination that space lost its vast dimensions and drew comfortable around them, and they, mother and son, alone, transformed, hooping that the power might not come on again too soon...”(Page. 5) This signifies the enlightenment of Montag by Clarisse’s reminder of his youth about candlelight. The two observation Clarisse makes about Montag’s conversational mannerisms are that Montag laughs when Clarisse haven’t been funny and unlike other firefighters, Montag listens to Clarisse’s story without considering them as jokes. What things do the McClellan's do cause them to be classified as peculiar?
Things make Clarisse McClellan to be classified as peculiar are that she thinks too much, such as, she thinks drivers don’t know what grass or flowers are. Also, Clarisse rarely watch the ‘parlor walls’ or go to races or Fun Parks. Then, Clarisse says “we’re most peculiar”(Page.7 ) about her family’s talking time. This contributes to the story plot that Montag has a some extent of enlightenment and he eagers to know the truth. What is the significance of the refrain repeated by the woman whose house was burned? What did it mean? What is its effect on Montag?
The repeated sentence spoken by the woman, “Play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.”(Page 33), has a powerful impact on the main character, Montag and for the whole story plot, It’s because after this event, Montag is haunted by the old women and he became disillusioned about being a fireman. According to Captain Beatty, a man named Latimer said that to a man named Nicholas Ridley, as they were being burnt alive at Oxford , for heresy, on October 16, 1555.
