Alternative Medicine; What’s safe? What’s Improving? Over-the-counter and prescription medicines have been used worldwide to treat conditions and diseases, especially within North America. However, researchers recently have discovered that the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) may be a better alternative to treating chronic diseases. “CAM is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are often not integrated with conventional medicine” (Li 2). The artifact titled “Complementary and alternative medicine in pediatric allergic disorders,” is a review on various research studies performed by professional sources to determine if complementary and alternative medicine, specifically traditional Chinese medicine (herbal products and acupuncture), is a better solution to treat pediatric allergic disorders. The three rhetorical devices she uses most are ethos, logos, and pathos, which are meant to persuade or convince the audience. The use of ethos convinces the audience of the credibility of the source. The publisher of this review is an experienced medical doctor who also works as a professor at a well-known university in New York City. Given that Professor Li went through 12+ years of post-secondary school, one would consider the information she provides to be very credible and accurate. Li references additional sources in her review that the audience can refer to for further information. She also provides footnotes, which support her credibility. As mentioned earlier, Li uses academic-based vocabulary that attributes to her credibility and qualifications. In addition, Li provides abbreviations to help the audience understand the medical terminology clearly so that they do not have to assume the definition of the term and draw inaccurate
