Chuck Berry is known as one of the most influential artists of the rhythm and blues, rock and roll error of music from the 50’s through the 70’s. He is famous for a vast amount of hit records including the hit songs Maybellene My-Ding-A-Ling and Johnny B. Goode. Many music historians considered Berry’s song Maybellne the first true rock and roll song. While undergoing his musical career Berry faced numerous devastating obstacles that could have tragically ended his career. All of Berry’s songs were derived from his adept lyrics and peculiar sounds. Chuck Berry influenced a lot of artists with his amazing talent. Down Bound Trains tempo is much faster than that of Maybellene although Maybellene has an up to beat tempo as well. The lyrics of both songs contain a little slang which adds soul to the songs, it makes you feel it more and or really feel the emotion that he put into the song. Chuck Berry’s dialect in both songs really don’t portray the rock and roll genre of music. In the song Down Bound Train the music kind of makes you feel like you are being chased by something and or someone. Maybellene on the other hand sounds like something you would square dance to. Maybellene and Down Bound Train both incorporate polyrhythmic texture techniques in the songs. Meanings of these two songs vary too. In Down Bound Train Chuck Berry is warning against the alcohol abuse and redemption from doing so. But one of the very well known and talented artists was Buddy Holly. Buddy Holly was the first to pioneer new music genres and progressive music. Charles Hardin Holley (1936-1959) was an American musician and artist whose creative career began in 1956. The family name is correctly spelled “Holley” but his first recording contract from Decca Records in 1956 spelled his last name “Holly” and he kept it that way for the rest of his career (Griggs 1). Holly took a very influential position in the music industry and built an audience for his Rock and Roll music very quickly due to his unique voice and advanced knowledge of music. Buddy Holly is a prime example of a musical pioneer who blended resources from various music genres including a variety of popular genres such as rhythm and blues (RNB), oriental, and African (Schinder and Schwartz 85).
Two very influential artists of their time were Jimi Hendrix and Ritchie Valens. Many people wouldn’t consider these two artists to be similar nor have achieved the same success, however they’re paths were quite similar. Both these artists began their careers very early in their lives and were able to influence others artists along the way. Many of their songs also made the top charts. Although both their careers were short lived, both these artists left a mark in the world of music.
“Rock Awhile” by Goree Carter is a lot more upbeat than “Devil Got my Woman”, with more swing to it. This song is much faster paced and can be danced to. Also about a woman, this song has more happy lyrics about a woman he loved and how his baby was coming home. There are a lot more instruments to this song like an electric guitar, a piano, a saxophone, percussion, etc. and the song was primarily instrumental, which emphasized these different musical instruments. Goree Carter’s voice was a lot smoother than James’ which made it easy to understand and follow along with, and the strength that came from his vocal style easily pulls you in.
