Impact of British Colonization Exposed in A Small Place, A Passage to India, and Robinson Crusoe
British colonialism began in the early fifteen hundreds and even continues today with the British rule of the British Virgin Islands. For centuries, literature has served as a type of historical documentation of colonization as many authors wrote about colonization from both a colonized and a colonizer's point of view. During colonization, and post-colonization, the physical environment of each colony was changed. Using references to A Small Place, A Passage to India, and Robinson Crusoe, I will provide examples of the physical changes to the colonized societies made by England and discuss the reactions of the colonized people.
Jamaica Kincade is quoted as saying "The English loved England so much they built it everywhere they went." Kincaid writes about the feelings of the colonized society in A Small Place. While she expresses the feeling of the colonized, contrarily, she explains the ideas of the English colonizer. In this excerpt, she is describing Antigua, the place she grew up, and how the British changed it. She begins by explaining the English love England so much, whenever they went they turned it into England. She supports this idea in several ways. First, she gives examples of the street names in Antigua. On a tropical island in the Caribbean Sea, the streets have names such as Rodney, Hood, Hawkins and Drake Street all names of "English maritime criminals". Secondly, Kincaid continues with her description of High Street. This was the street where all of the colonial government buildings were located. However, I can draw an inference that Friday must have liked Crusoe's "English" house or he would not have stayed. We can make comparisons to Crusoe being the Colonizer and Friday was the colonized. Therefore, we can conclude, that the colonized people did like some aspects of the British colonization.
In conclusion, "The English loved England so much they built it everywhere." As shown in A Small Place, A Passage to India, and Robinson Crusoe, the effects that the British had on each of their colonies will certainly last a long time. Colonies will embrace schools, libraries, Governmental buildings, banks, airports and even churches that will remain there for generations after the expiration of British rule.

“In the last twenty years the amount of time Americans have spent at their jobs has risen steadily. Each year the change is small, amounting to about nine hours, or slightly more than one additional day of work (Schor, 1). Juliet B. Schor’s The Overworked American: The Unexpected Decline of Leisure explores the decline of leisure time in American professionals and laborers as a result of an increase in working time. In comparison to our European counterparts, American workers are now working close to 320 more hours yearly. Schor highlights the fact that American workers are choosing to work multiple jobs contributing to less leisure time due to longer working hours. In conclusion the book depicts the idea that the materialistic nature of Americans results in them choosing to work more so that they can spend more.
To discuss work, one must first of all try to define work. Once one starts to think about this definition however, one finds that there are as many definitions of work as there are people. Experts such as sociologists have been trying to reach a definite answer, yet they can never agree between them. Although it is accepted that work is that time which is not leisure, one is then confounded with trying to find a definition for leisure. Stanley Parker reached a compromise by dividing our time in five sections, merging from pure work to pure leisure. However this difficulty in defining work should point out that these many different definitions lead to different attitudes, with the result that one can never generalise.
When it comes to maintaining a balance between work and pleasure, it can often be overwhelming. “The present hysteria is not a necessary or inevitable condition of life it’s something we’ve chosen. (Krieder 983)” Although at the end of the day being busy is a choice.
At some point, the more time one spends working, the less productive they become, as Delistraty states. Delistraty tells us that the French are required to take at least 30 days off each year. This should not just be mandatory for French workers, but for every full-time worker. Too many people in our culture overwork causing them to miss out on important milestones in their loved ones’ lives. Working over 50 hours a week not only stresses one’s body but also limits time spent with friends and family, which is one of my top priorities. Delistraty mentions Menlo Innovations and how they see people who work overtime as “inefficient workers, not dedicated.” I think that every company should view overtime this way, they recognize that overwork is inefficient. If companies have this mentality it might help people to focus more on themselves and not neglect their physical and psychological health and lead them to more efficient work. The motivation for employees to work hard, and overwork, is to allow themselves a comfortable retirement as Delistraty states. By overworking, people tend to miss out on milestones and important events, in their lives and family. As Delistraty tells us, people “are too busy fitting their lives into work, rather than fitting work into their lives”

The definition of workaholism from a dictionary would be someone who has a compulsion to work all time and a workaholic is someone who loves to work or who is addicted to work. How can this people work throughout the whole day and be happy and never tired knowing that they sleep only for 4-5 hours a day. Perhaps the main reason for this is that people evaluate themselves more on measurable things such as personal achievements and financial worth – not emotional wellness. Oligarchy: In my research in the LDCE, I read that oligarchy means “...a small group of people who run a country or organization, or a country that is run by a small group of people...” In this case, the Spartan government is an example of it. In the Spartan society, there were people who “...envied the Spartan rejection of democracy as well as its noble military society in which the best people ruled by virtue of their strength and virility...” those people were called oligarchs. Daniel Defoe wrote his fictional novel Robinson Crusoe during the 18th century, a time of colonization, and the British agricultural revolution. In the novel Robinson Crusoe desires civilization and comforts during his years on the island, so much that he alters the ecology of the fictional “island” in order to fulfill his craving. Consequently, Robinson Crusoe changes the ecology of the island, with the introduction of invasive species, European crops, and enclosures.
