To many people, especially children, the word snack implies thoughts of chocolate and sugar; however, in the early twentieth century, people relied on fruits to fulfill their desire for a between-meal snack. It was even a privilege to some children to receive an apple or a banana from their parents as an after-school snack. Unfortunately, children today prefer junk foods like candy bars. If the slaves didn’t try fight for their freedom, the US would have the equal rights that they have today. This changed the fabric of the American population forever.
In “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?” by Mark Bittman, argues to change people thinking on fast food because Bittman claims that healthy food is essentially cheaper than fast food. To help support Bittman’s claim he uses many different rhetorical strategies in his editorial. Bittman begins his article by giving the person who reads a few statistics about the price of fast food as of today at high quality restaurants like McDonalds. The title of the editorial correspondingly states a disagreement which he illustrates the illustration of ordering from McDonalds, where he then demonstrates that cooking ourselves is inexpensive. Furthermore Bittman lectures that Americans have made cooking a chore.
I can remember rare occasions as a child when I would wake up for school and there would be pancakes, eggs and bacon on the table and orange juice or Sunny Delight to drink. These exciting occasions, however, were just that: rare. Most days I would bound down the stairs to the toaster loaded with Pop-Tarts. I would usually be disappointed that I couldn't devour a wholesome breakfast, but I later came to understand the convenience of the Pop-Tart. My parents could put pastries in the toaster and continue to get ready for their day without having to worry about too much clean-up. It was during these early days of my education that I really found a love for the sugary, fruit-filled pastries.

Muhammad Ali started off as Cassius Clay of Louisville who goes to a local store in search of merchandise and leaves his bike sitting unchained outside of the store. When he comes back the bike is gone and Clay is furious. He hunts for the nearest police officer in hopes of getting his bike back somehow, but the police officer could not help him and Clays vow to beat up the culprit (Ezra 7). Clay ironically took up boxing several months after the ruling of the Brown v. Board of Education court case. The story of Clay meeting Joe Martin is one of the defining moments in the man that would become Ali’s boxing career (Ezra 7). Without that moment in history you can validly argue that Muhammad Ali might have never became the legend that we know today.
In discussions of the obesity epidemic, one controversial issue has been increasing regulations on junk food. On the one hand, supporters of the idea argue that it is the U.S. government 's responsibility to protect its citizens from diseases like obesity, and that extra regulations would do just that. On the other hand, detractors contend that more government regulations would limit consumer choice and infringe on human rights. Others even maintain that junk food should be illegal. My own view is that fast food corporations are mostly responsible for the obesity epidemic and should be further regulated.

Currently my eating habits have not changed much since the beginning of the semester. However, I can say that my choices of food to eat are healthier and I have been eating in smaller portions. Now I tend to look at the nutritional value when buying food. Since cutting back and making healthier choices, I can say I have not had a craving for sugar and have cut back on adding salt into my diet and use pepper instead.

There has been a sharp increase in the availability and consumption of junk food in recent years and this may have contributed to rising rates of obesity. Junk foods are defined as items that are high in energy content, fat, and/or sugar and low in nutrients. So from this we gain that junk foods are not just foods full of sugar, junk foods can be any foods that are bad for you. It can be anything from a piece of candy to processed food (such as canned food, ramen noodles, cookies, etc.).
