In the play Othello written by William Shakespeare the two characters Iago and Othello develop the writers purpose of other others words and jealousy can turn you into someone you are not and lead you to do things you otherwise would not. Othello is a trustworthy, loving man while Iago is deceptive and cunning. Iago’s quote “I am not what I am” shows his deceiving nature. In the play Othello is the protagonist as his desire is to be happily married and respected in the community. Iago is the antagonist because he wants to destroy Othello, his reputation and his marriage with Desdemona. Throughout the entire play we see these two characters portray the strong theme that words and jealousy can turn people into someone they truly are not.

Right from the start of the play we can see that Iago does not like Othello and enjoys destroying him. “For my sport and profit. I hate the moor” his strong words of hate show his evil personality. Even the term “the moor” which Othello is often referred to by Iago shows how little he feels towards Othello. Iago begins cunningly planning to ruin Othello through deception and words of jealousy. Othello became someone he was not and did things he never would have imagined because of his relationship with Iago and the influence he had over him. Iago’s deceptive ways and knowledge of Othello’s weakness’ were too much for Othello’s trustworthy, loving nature which led to his downfall. This relationship of the antagonist Iago and the protagonist Othello throughout the play develop the writer's purpose that the words of others can affect and change you significantly.
