“Sometimes it’s the people that no one expects anything of, do the things no one can imagine.”- Alan Turing. This was said to Alan by his one and only friend, christopher Morcom, who sadly passed away later that year. (Christopher Morcom 1911-1930). Friends can mean the world to people. The documentary War Dance with Dominic, John Steinbeck's novela Of Mice and Men with George and Lennie, and in the majority of books and movies, show and support that relationships are the most important part of life.
In the movie War Dance, Dominic had many relationships that impacted his life in many ways. He has to talk to the leader of the people who killed his parents, siblings, and friends. Remembering why he is there and put aside the past and what

that man had done to his childhood, he has to ask where his brother was. Hearing the man say that his brother was most likely dead was not easy. He keeps faith that things will look up with the people he has left, and lean on the friendships and other relationships that he has to give him the happiness he needs to survive this awful time. As well as Dominic's bonds with his friends, his connection with music holds the same amount of importance. Music was the one thing that got his mind off what he has been through. Relationships don’t always have to be with people. They can be with animals and things that make you happy and keep you sane. In Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie have a relationship that is different from the other workers.
In chapter four toured the end of the novella, when Lennie is visiting Crooks, Crooks says “I seen it over an’ over- a guy talkin’ to another guy and it don’t make no difference if he don’t hear or understand.” (71) Lennie depends on George and George depends on lennie. To George, Lennie may be just be someone to talk to, even if he doesn’t understand. It is enough to keep goerge same. Also in chapter two of Of Mice and Man, Slim talks about how guys who travel alone get mean mean, they don’t ever want to talk to anybody. Some even go crazy. He tells George that him and lennie are different, because they go around together. They have each other to talk to and be around. person. Relationships are just as important and present in book and movies.
In Harry potter By J.k Rowling, Harry’s link with Professor Snape is very important. Snape loved Harry’s mom, Lily, and that love carried over to Harry, saving his life in the end. If snape hadden’t loved Lily the way he did, then Harry might have been dead by the second book. But Snape remembered the moments he and Lily had shared and when he looked into Harry’s eyes, he saw her and couldn’t help but love Harry as if he was his own son. Connections as strong as that can save lives. Even unlikely friendships can last longer than any other, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson for example. However, correlations between protagonist and antagonist are important as well. Like in wall-e, the alliance between Autopilot (a highly intelligent robot) and the Captain. This is one of those relationships that is more of a hate then a love or need for the other. Autopilot believes that the Captain is almost just like a pet, and that he is really the one in charge, and for most of the movie that is how it is. Also at the beginning of the movie the Captain has no idea of the actual power Autopilot has over him and the other humans on the spaceship. Relationships between “hero” and “villain” are one of the most important in a book, movie, or piece of literature because they help build the story by creating suspense and other relations off their own. Books and movies display all sorts of relationships that can teach people things
and communicate themes. Relationships mean more to people them anything, whether they be fictional or in real life. Domic would be a lot less happy without his music. George would be a lot less kind without Lennie, and Lennie would be dead if it wasn’t for George. Even Sherlock Holmes would be lost without his John Watson. Strong relationships can not be made in a day, they are complex, and with that very important in life and literature.
George chooses to stick with Lennie, despite his mental disabilities. They are loyal to each other, even though they are different: “Even in the open one stayed behind the other” (2). Their desire to spend time together in fellowship indicates the theme of true friendship. Later on in the novella, George and Lennie are introduced to Slim, the jerkline skinner on the ranch. Because his job requires him to move around, Slim, like most migrant farmers, is lonely. He observes George and Lennie’s unusual friendship and questions it saying, “You guys travel around together?” (34). George and Lennie’s loyalty to each other protects them from the loneliness of their work, revealing one important benefit of true friendship. Near the end of the novella, Lennie is in the barn with
To begin with, according to Lucius Annaeus Seneca, “One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood”. Even this quote explains that true friendship is when an individual stands for another individual. In the novel Of Mice and Men, author John Steinbeck examine the idea of friendship between two migrant ranch worker even when there was difficulties. Through the character of Slim and George, author Steinbeck illustrates friendship and reveals that friendships stand up for each other even when is difficult time.
Marion Winik’s “What Are Friends For?” expresses the characteristics of friendships and their importance in her existence. Winik begins by stating her theory of how some people can’t contribute as much to a friendship with their characteristic traits, while others can fulfill the friendship. She illustrates the eight friendships she has experienced, categorized as Buddies, Relative Friends, Work Friends, Faraway Friends, Former Friends, Friends You Love to Hate, Hero Friends, and New Friends. In like manner, the friendships that I have experienced agree and contradict with Winik’s categorizations.
why Lennie and George Travel together and is not very understanding. Although you never find
Two characters to be analyzed in terms of their male relationships are George and Lennie. An article describes the friendship between men, and how most of the time it is more than just a normal friendship. The author states, “The heroic friendship was a friendship between two men that was intense on an emotional and intellectual level” (McKay). Guys have a stronger relationship than just being able to hang out and have fun. They have a bond that they are emotionally involved in, meaning they really love each other but not in anything more than friends. They also are connected on an intellectual level, which means they know everything about each other and they are able to open up whenever they need a friend. There are a lot of scenes from Of Mice and Men that show George and Lennie’s friendship. One scene is when George is telling Lennie how most people are alone trying to get through life, but they are different. They have each other. George says, “ If them other guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody gives a damn. But not us! An' why? Because… because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why. He laughed delightedly” (Steinbeck 40). This quote from Of Mice and Men shows that George and Lennie connect on an emotional and intellectual level. They both know that they have each others back for no matter what they go through
The Quote ‘’ Your truest friends are the ones who will stand by you in your darkest moments; because they are willing to be brave the shadows with you, and in your greatest moments they’re not afraid to let you shine’’. To me this quote means you know who your true friends are because through the trials tribulations and darkest points they will show you light and be by your side. When greatness strikes they will be there to cheer you on and be happy for your successes. I agree with this quote because a friend is someone who is supposed to be there for you even when everyone else isn’t, someone you tell everything to and trust because friendship is something sacred finding a good genuine friend is hard to fine but once you do the support that was mentioned in the quote is natural. The two parts of literature that connect to the quote would be of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and The Freedom Writers by Erin Gruwell. The literary elements
It is very apparent that each of the four characters in the two friendships feed off of each other. In Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie are very different, yet they need one other. George is a very independent, loyal, and caring person who takes care of Lennie because Lennie is unable to take care of himself. Although George makes it seem like he would be better off without Lennie, George makes it clear that without him he would be better off. This is evident because of this conversation h regularly had with Lennie” I could go get a job an’
The emotional symbiosis between George and Lennie helps each man. Lennie’s attachment to George is most strongly visible when Crooks suggests George is not coming back. Lennie is almost moved to hysterics and his fear does not quickly abate. George prefers to feign dislike for Lennie to Lennie’s face: “I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn’t have you on my tail” (7). When pressed, George reveals his true feelings for Lennie. “I want you to stay with me Lennie” (13). They stay together because “It’s a lot easier to go around with a guy you know” (35). Both men need and value their strong emotional relationship.
Lennie's loneliness stems from his constancy of being yelled at by George. Lennie didn't like to be around George when he was yelling at him. Lennie and George were friends, but George yelled at him just to try to keep him out of trouble. Lennie tried to make friends other than George, but it never seemed to work out. He even tried to make friends with Crooks, when no one else would ever talk to him. This shows that Lennie really needs a friend that can understand him (Moore 603).
Lennie and George’s companionship meet and transcend all the needed requirements. They are a textbook example of loyal friends. They, together, are like peanut butter and jelly in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Lennie gives George someone to talk to and someone to keep him on track. George gives Lennie insight on the world and someone that will respect him even though he isn’t intelligent. They, more importantly, give each other something to live for. If George wouldn’t have met Lennie he would be a drunk in a whorehouse dying of cirrhosis. If Lennie didn’t meet George he would of died soon after his aunt did, because he would either have got himself in a bind with no one to help him or he would of simply wondered off and died of loneliness.
Relationships are an important essence of life. Humans need relationships because we are dependent on each other to survive. Babies need their mothers to feed and nurse them, and friends need each other to support, comfort, sympathize, and understand them. The friendship between George and Lennie outlined the core of Of Mice and Men, and although it’s sometimes idealized and exaggerated throughout the novel, there is no question of its sincerity. Lennie thinks of George as his only friend, his guardian, someone who he can trust and depend on, someone who had accepted him for who he is despite his childlike tendencies. Every time he did something wrong, his only thoughts would be of George’s disapproval. “I done a real bad thing. I shouldn’t have did that. George’ll be mad. An’… he said…. An’ hide in the brush till he come. He’s gonna be mad.” (pg. 92) On the other hand, George thinks of Lennie as a constant source of frustration, and as he frequently mention in the novel, “God, you’re a lot of trouble. I could get along so easy and nice if I didn’t have you on my t...
Whether or not the men have a stable friendship with others determines some of their actions. George and Lennie’s friendship is very strong, so they base off their actions on the other persons. The have been staying together for many years. The two moving around and living together is great for Lennie, because due to
friendship that it is so valuable? And, more specifically, how does this truth fit with
With friends, our lives will be better, our days will be full of joy, and our unhappiness will fade away. Friends will take care when we are in need as we will support them in everything with the best we have. Life with friends will always give us wonderful memories that we will never forget for the rest of our days. Works Cited Viorst, Judith. A. In the book Of Mice and Men George takes care of Lennie affects his life by making things a lot more stressful. He constantly has to look after Lennie, and make sure that he doesn’t say/do something that will get him into any trouble. With all the added stress of taking care of Lennie makes him snap at Lennie many times throughout the book, for example, when he yells at him for asking about ketchup when they were eating dinner. George’s life would also be a lot more lonely without George though, because even though he is stressful to take care of Lennie, he constantly keeps George company.
