A hero’s journey can vary, however, each journey shares one main component: trials and tribulations. These are vital components used within fairytales to create emotional connections and comprehension between the characters and the audience to portray certain messages. Hardships can exaggerate human experiences in order to gain the reader’s attention through relatability. How do trials and tribulations shape the hero's character development throughout their journey? Are there any recurring patterns in the types of trials and tribulations heroes encounter across different mythologies or storytelling traditions? The first story that I found an example of is within Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s 1857 final edition of Rapunzel. A father desperate to …show more content…
Cinderella’s hardships began at a young age when her mother died. In fact, “[e]very day the girl went to the grave of her mother and wept” (Norton 148). To make matters worse, her father remarried. “His new wife brought with her two daughters, whose features were beautiful and white, but whose hearts were foul and black. This meant the beginning of a hard time for the poor stepchild” (Norton 148). Even this quote states how hard Cinderella’s life has been. She was treated as anything but a human sleeping in the kitchen, working to earn every meal, dressed in an old gray smock and wooden shoes. “From morning until night, she had to work hard. Every day, she got up before daybreak to carry water, start the fire, cook, and wash. On top of that the two sisters did everything imaginable to make her life miserable” (Norton 148). All Cinderella ever did was work and she asked for nothing in return for the ball. Even then, her stepmother refused to allow her to go because she was supposedly an embarrassment to the family with how dirty she was. Moreover, they refused to give her better clothes to wear to this event. All these trials and tribulations allowed Cinderella to develop into a kind, caring, humble, and beautiful individual. Therefore, when the opportunity arose, she fell in love with the prince at the ball and was able to finally have her happily ever after. This
It all begins with “Once upon a time” and ends with “and they lived happily ever after”. “Cinderella” is a very widely known story that many children around the world look up to and admire through their entire life. The history of this story, how scholars interpret this tale, and how the authors have retold the story are all key points to keeping this story fresh and popular. Most of the time when people hear the story of “Cinderella”, they think about the Disney version and maybe it is time that changes. All in all, the story brings light to everyone’s life even if they only know the original “Cinderella”.
A young girl is forced to live with her step-mother and step-sisters after her father and mother die. She becomes the maid of the family, tending to their every need. Eventually there is a ball; she acquires a fairy Godmother, goes to the ball, falls in love with the prince, blah blah blah. All you really need to know is that she has a happy ending. A happy ending. No matter how much suffering she went through in her early years, at the end, it all came together and she had no more worries. And this is the problem. Cinderella is not realistic. It never was and never will be. Watching this movie when I was young made me believe there was a prince waiting for me somewhere. I grew up thinking that life was simple and uncomplicated, that I did not need to worry about the future because there was a man that would provide everything I wanted and needed. But as I got older, I realized this was not the case. I saw many of my friend’s parents divorce, people die, and the world fight with each other. My fantasy died off, and I realized I had to work hard for myself, and not others. The poem Cinderella by Anne Sexton made fun of the ending of Cinderella. She states, “Cinderella and the prince / lived … happily ever after … / their darling smiles pasted on for eternity. / Regular Bobbsey Twins. / That story.” (Sexton 11). Notice who she referenced and how she has a sarcastic tone. Cinderella and the prince smiled for others, trying to convince
Most classic Cinderella movies made Cinderella look and feel as if she was “helpless” and “weak”. However, this movie made Cinderella feel strong and positive. This Cinderella is one who isn’t afraid to speak her up her mind to anyone not even the Prince. Like when Cinderella has him if he has any idea of how a girl should to treat. When the prince answered “Like a Princess you suppose”. You would agree with him. However, Cinderella cringed and frown. She said “No, like a person with kindness and respect.
The Hero’s Journey is an ancient archetype that we find throughout our modern life and also, in the world of literature.Whether metaphorical or real, the journey that a character goes on shows not only the incredible transformation of the hero but it also gives them their life meaning. It is the ultimate human experience and it reflects on every aspect of life. Take Logan, also known as Wolverine, from the X-Men movie as an example. His adventure starts with “The Call,” which is the first step of the Hero’s Journey. This step happens due to the realization of imbalance and injustice that the character has in their life. Logan steps into the first stage of the pattern but is hesitant to start his adventure because he does not know what and
...hough she was brutally mistreated, Cinderella was able to find a solution for her problems and children can to. All they have to do is make the effort, try hard enough and success is possible. Adults should pay attention to this and see if Cinderella can help their children keep a positive attitude toward whatever situation they may be in - exaggerated as it may be. Cinderella doesn't only help show one how to overcome adversity it points out good morals, and sends the message that good always prevails. Both of these messages are crucial in a society that is slowly crumbling. All we can do is watch and hope the messages learned from Cinderella make a difference in the lives of Children all around the world.
During the 1800’s two brothers, known as Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, began writing short stories that reflected their lives in central Europe. At this time the French under Napoleon’s rule had overrun Germany, which caused a lot of political issues. Germany’s new governmental ruler cut off the country of its local culture (National Geographic). The Grimm brothers tried to preserve the traditional oral stories of the time. They didn’t plan for their writings to become popular, or for them to be for the younger population. The Grimm brothers were motivated to change the stories up a bit as their tales captivated more people. They incorporated a softer side with a primary moral of the story for the readers (GrimmFairytales.com). It is from these original Grimm versions that modern fairytales, such as Cinderella originated from.
Cinderella is about a beautiful young girl that is mistreated by her step family. They give her the worst chores, make her sleep in a very dirty room up in an attic, and even give her the name “Cinderella” because they say she is always playing in the cinders of the fire. Cinderella is different though because despite being mistreated, she is still very nice and warmhearted. She represents how you should act in a world full of hate. If you are nice to everyone despite their rudeness and hate you will be rewarded in the end. Since Cinderella was so nice to her step sisters throughout her whole life, when she wanted to go to the ball her fairy godmother granted her wish. Cinderella got to go to the ball and looked absolutely beautiful, beautiful enough to catch the attention of the prince. While at the ball she was still very nice to her stepsisters, giving them food and telling them how nice they looked. When the stepsisters got home from the ball that night, they explain how lovely the mysterious princess was and how they thought she was so beautiful, not knowing that the mysterious princess was Cinderella. Cinderella played it off like she knew nothing of the princess but agreed with them that she must have been very beautiful. The next day came around and the stepsisters returned to the ball the
Instead, she takes her burdens as they come. Clare R. Ferrer noted in her article, “heroines are not allowed any defects, nor are they required to develop, since they are already perfect.” At the beginning of the story, Cinderella is described as “remaining pious and good” in-spite of the loss she endured. Cinderella is such a good person, that she takes the abuse from her step-sisters with grace and never asks for anything, nor does she reveal to her father or the Prince the type of life she has succumbed to living. Beauty goes hand-in-hand with being a good woman. According to Parsons, “a high premium is placed on feminine beauty…Women are positioned as the object of men’s gaze, and beauty determines a woman’s ...
Cinderella should not have a happily ever after is because she is a passive person and doesn't stand up for herself. Cinderella is possibly eighteen or older and she still continues to get bossed around by her stepmother and stepsisters when we both know she can easily move out and start a new life. She is shown as passive person every single time her family bosses her around to do something and does what they say. Cinderella is considered the maid of the house but has just as many rights as every person living there, if not more! Cinderella could say "no, I will not cook you breakfast. No, I will not make your bed. No, I will not wash and fold your clothes or clean the floors. I am not a maid I am your equal, stop pushing me around." Instead she listens to her stepmother and stepsisters. Another time Cinderella shows she is passive is when she gets ready for the ball and her stepmother says "no, you can not go. Are you crazy?" She could of stood up for herself and been like "look, I am eighteen I am going to that ball." Instead she is just a coward and lets them beat her up. Someon...
Each person in the world has heard of Cinderella, no matter what kind of version it may be. Cinderella is the one fairy tale story that has been popular and will always be the one tale that has to be told to children. Words and story lines might be twist and turn, but in the end the knowledge of the story will be learned in similar ways. As we all know when one story is told another is created, when one is at its best then another is at its worse. One version will always be better than another, but no matter what version it might be the story will be told.
There is also when her father rushes and gets remarried to her evil step mother. Cinderella was treated the worse by her father, because Cinderella’s father allowed his new wife and other children to mistreat his daughter, and overlooked the vile ways Cinderella endured from them. Cinderella’s father also stereotyped her. The father went along with the evil wife’s mistreatment and saying “There is only a deformed little Cinderella from my first wife, but she cannot possibly be the bride” (Grimm). Denying her the opportunity to go to the festival and seek happiness.
The Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales by Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm are a collection of German children’s stories. They were first published in 1812 and are known for their gory endings. Many fairy tales have derived from these German tales. Today these stories are magical and have happy endings, unlike the original fairy tales. The Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales were changed to be happier than the original stories as society changed.
We all know the classic story of Cinderella, and if you don’t, it’s a simple story. A poor girl named Ella lived with her evil stepmother and her two stepsisters, who were just as evil. None of them treated Ella nicely, in fact they treated her more like a servant than a family member. Her two sisters were always making fun of her because she was always dirty from cleaning. One day they called her Cinder- Ella and it just stuck. Cinderella wanted to go to the ball just like everyone else in the kingdom, but her stepmother wouldn’t let her. She decided to sneak out to go to the ball, with the help of her fairy Godmother. Her fairy Godmother used her magic to give Cinderella a beautiful outfit, a cute pumpkin carriage, and everything that goes
The story teaches us that society expects women to be passive. Cinderella’s abuse by her stepsisters and stepmother cause her to live in grief silently without expressing her emotions. She does nothing to fight for her freedom except sing about all the dreams of happiness that she hopes will come true someday. She only wishes for things to change rather than attempt to do anything to change it for herself. Cinderella waits to be rescued by Prince Charming instead of fighting for her own freedom. This teaches women that they should suffer in silence without doing anything for themselves.
Cinderella’s mother passed away and her father remarried a woman who had two daughters from a previous marriage. A few weeks passed and a prince is holding a three day festival and all the beautiful young girls in the town were invited. Cinderella wanted to go but her evil stepmother gave her two impossible tasks to complete before she could attend the festival. Cinderella completes the two tasks with the help of her bird friends and her mother’s grave. Cinderella goes to the festival and she dances with the prince all three days. Finally, the prince has fallen in love with her and eventually they get married. Fairytales and Disney productions threaten gender politics and women’s role by portraying women in certain areas like domestic behaviors
