A Raisin in the Sun has many connections to the Harlem Renaissance. There are many similar racial views, feminism, and ideas about the American Dream. A Raisin in the Sun is a play by Lorraine Hansberry but the title of the play comes from the poem “Harlem” that was written by Langston Hughes. A Raisin in the Sun also means “A Dream Deferred”. A Raisin the Sun is about a black family who goes through many struggles together but they never leave each other’s sides and they support one another. The Younger family was pretty poor because it was hard for blacks to get good jobs. However, Lena, the mama, got money that was her husbands and she used some of it to buy a house. The house happened to be in an all white community and a man named Carl comes to Lena to tell her that her family is not welcome. During the Harlem Renaissance there were many issues with skin color. In the 1900’s the Harlem Renaissance was also known as the “Negro Movement”. Blacks, in A Raisin in the Sun and the Harlem Renaissance were treated unfairly. …show more content…

Beneatha, Lena’s daughter, actually went against the idea and said she may never get married and tried becoming a doctor which was unheard of for a girl and she’s black so it makes it even harder for people to accept. Girls were supposed to get married and mostly stay at home and are servants. Women in the Harlem Renaissance, like Beneatha, were fighting for what they wanted and were fighting for equal rights. They were not fighting for jobs but they were fighting for the right to vote. They wanted to be equal to men and have at least some say in the world.
