Brendan Ellis Mrs. Foster English 112 Period 1 May 20, 2016 “The only help I could look to in the matter of replenishing my sapped vitality was my own?:” An Examination of Determination in King’s “Survivor Type” and Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” The short story “Survivor Type” by Stephen King and published in 1985 is told through the diary written by Richard Pine a former surgeon of Italian decent, who changed his last name from Pinzetti. Pine finds himself stuck on an island, having survived the sinking of the Callas on his trip back from Vietnam to America. Along with him is two kilos of pure heroin, worth around three hundred and fifty thousand dollars, which is his ticket back to becoming a surgeon. Writing in his diary for around …show more content…
26 days Pine faces some tough decisions including eating his own flesh due to lack of food until his last entry dated Fe/40. Although having a contrasting plot to King’s “Survivor Type”, “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, published in 1924 are similar. Both having main characters who preserver during tough times. Rainsford, a big game hunter in “The Most Dangerous Game” is travelling to the Amazon to hunt jaguars. Falling off his yacht Rainsford finds himself on an island owned by a gentlemen who goes by the name of General Zaroff. Zaroff a wealthy man owns the island and hunts his own preference of game humans. Rainsford survives three days of the hunt, in which he is hunted by Zaroff. After his victory Rainsford returns to the General’s home for a final hunt in which only one will survive. Finding themselves in either life or death situations Pine along with Rainsford put their heart and soul into finding a way to survive (Lectures). In King’s “Survivor Type” and Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Pine and Rainsford develop the theme of determination by their perseverance in unfavorable situations. Growing up in New York City’s little Italy never gave Richard Pine much of an opportunity to live his dream in becoming a surgeon, as little Italy is the Italian projects. However Richard Pine uses his intelligence to realize his only way to survive the projects is to play football. Pine put his hands at risk every time he took the field as surgeons most important attribute are their hands. Risking his dream every game expresses Pine as he writes in his diary “I played football in high school. I was the best damn football player my school ever produced. Quarterback. I made All-City my last two years. I hated football. But if you’re a poor wop from the projects and you want to go to college, sports are your only ticket. So I played, and I got my athletic scholarship” (King 1). Just as Pine Rainsford has a dream which for him is his hunting the best sport in the world, the jaguar but is faced with a dilemma leading to a short term dream of survival. As Rainsford yacht inches closer to the amazon it passes Ship-Trap Island. Late at night Rainsford puffed on his favorite pipe in his steamer chair. Hearing three gun shots Rainsford climbed the railing of the yacht looking in the direction of the sound. Losing his pipe Rainsford lunges for it falling off the railing until: The blood-warm waters of the Caribbean dosed over his head . . . ‘Pistol Shot,’ muttered Rainsford, swimming on. Ten minutes of determined effort brought another sound to his ears--the most welcome he had ever heard--the muttering and growling of the sea breaking on a rocky shore. He was almost on the rocks before he saw them; on a night less calm he would have shattered against them. (Connell 2-3) Pine could of forgot about going to college and stay in the projects, but instead knowing football was his only chance to get out he became amazing at the sport, even though he hated it.
Rainsford knowing his only survival was swimming to shore puts forth a tremendous amount of effort in achieving it. Both pine and Rainsford use their determination to accomplish daunting task which others likely would have gave up on. Once aboard the island Rainsford found a giant of a house owned by General Zaroff. Spending the night at Zaroffs, Rainsford enjoying a delicious meal along with pajamas of the softest silk for night. In the morning Rainsford learns Zaroff favorite kind of game, humans. Once Rainsford refuses to hunt alongside Zaroff, the General offers an alternative game: ’You’ll find this game worth playing,’ the general said enthusiastically. ‘Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?’ ‘And if I win--‘began Rainsford huskily. ‘I’ll cheerfully acknowledge myself defeat if I do not find you by midnight of the third day,’ Said General Zaroff. 11) Pine similar to Rainsford is also forced to participate in an unfavorable hunt for survival. Stuck on an all rock island with no vegetation does not make survival easy for Pine. Using his Quarterback talents (throwing the football) Pine is able to get food in the form of a gull. Pine writes in his diary after killing the gull about the experience: I threw the rock as hard as I could and hit it broadside. It let out a loud squawk and tried to fly away, but I’d broken its right wing . . . The son of a bitch led me a marry, chase; once, on the other side of the central rockpile, I got my foot caught in a hole between two rocks and nearly fractured my ankle . . . I caught a handful of its tailfeathers and it turned around and pecked me. Then I had one hand around its feet. I got my other hand on its miserable neck and broke it. (King 3) Rainsford although he may not enjoy hunting against Zaroff accepts the challenge of the hunt to continue to survive. Pine knowing his body can only survive for so long kills a gull while having a serious injury making him less mobile. Both men show determination as they either go against their will to survive or chase a bird while for food. Being a former surgeon Pine knew his foot needed to be amputated as every day pasted. As his foot would soon be the result of his death he decided to remove it. Shortly after the act of removing his own foot and surviving it Pine records the procedure in his diary “Did it. The pain was the part I was most worried about. I can stand pain, but I thought in my weakened condition, a combination of hunger and agony might cause unconsciousness before I could finish. But the heroin solved that quite n nicely” (King 8). Just a Pine did Rainsford also had a life or death situation revolving around his foot. Continuing his hunt against Zaroff, Rainsford found himself in Death Swamp. Little did he know Death Swamp was quicksand, previously claiming multiple victims. Rainsford was about to become one of them “Then, as he stepped forward, his foot sank into the ooze. He tried to wrench it back, but the muck sucked viciously at his foot as if it were a giant leech. With a violent effort, he tore his feet loose. He knew where he was now. Death Swamp and its quicksand” (Connell 13). Pine and Rainsford both could have accepted death as a result of their foot. However Pine used his ticket to becoming a surgeon again to survive a surgery on himself saving his life. Rainsford did not allowed the quicksand to pull him under as he used all his strength to pull his foot loose, showing his determination to live along with Pine. Rainsford survived the hunt of three long days testing his skills against Zaroff. Although Rainsford was aloud safe passage off the island as his reward for his victory Rainsford was not satisfied. Meeting Zaroff in his bedroom was Rainsford looking for a final hunt: “The general sucked in his breath and smiled. ‘I congratulate you,’ he said. ‘You have won the game.’ Rainsford did not smile. ‘I am still a beast at bay,’ he said, in a low, hoarse voice. ‘Get ready, General Zaroff.’ The general made one of his deepest bows. ‘I see,’ he said. ‘Splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford . . .’ He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided. (Connell 14) Like Rainsford Pine is faced with a decisions going against his own although his is for survival.
Given no other choice Pine made a tough decision. Low in mobility Pine could not find food easy causing him to go against the few morals the man has. Pine writes about the events of eating his own foot in his diary “Haven’t I told you I’d had nothing to eat for four days? And that the only help I could look to in the matter of replenishing my sapped vitality was my own?” (King 9). Rainsford and Pine determination is evident as they go against their own morals to benefit themselves and others. Rainsford kills Zaroff going against his moral of not killing men to insure no other man would have to play in the hunt. Pine on the other hand eats his own foot going against his morals on eating humans to survive while low on
food. Richard Pine and Rainsford both show their true amount of heart during their stays on different islands. Living on a rock island was not easy for pine as he was injured and low on food without any sign of rescue. Even while in Little Italy Pine was still dealing with difficult decisions to achieve his goals. Eating his own foot for food after cutting it off with only a knife, playing a hated sport to get a full scholarship and chasing down a gull with a fractured ankle shows Pines determination to achieve his own goals and survive. Surviving a ten minute swim after falling off his yacht was terrible enough for Rainsford however he was forced to survive against an experienced hunter. He also was challenged with surviving quicksand and killing for Zaroff for the better of other men, showing his determination to survive along with helping others. Both Pine and Rainsford show put in tough life deciding positions that putting in a valid effort can and will give the results wanted.
A man, once curious, thought highly of and condoning cold blooded murder. Has no found a new love of killing people. A murderer, loving to see people in pain from the suffering of dying or getting injured, creating a hole with sharps stakes for people to fall into, and feeding a powerful person to hounds. He is no more obsessed with hunting animals, but hunting humans. This man is now the general of Ship Trap Island. Rainsford becomes the next general of Ship Trap Island. He becomes the next general of the island because he has a similar outlook on life as General Zaroff , and he has changed from not wanting to hunt humans to wanting to hunt humans.
Both “Full Circle” and “The Most Dangerous Game” have many differences with how the murder is presented in the story, but both also have many similarities. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the murder was done for fun and sport, General Zaroff killed his victims to fulfill a hunting sensation. But in the short story “Full Circle”, the murder was done out of jealousy, because the Terry was rejected. Throughout my paper I hope to show the similarities and differences of the murder cases within the two stories.
In the game, General Zaroff arms everyone on that crew with a knife and a pack of food and each and gives them a three-hour head start. When three hours has passed, General Zaroff hunts them down with a pistol of the smallest bullet size and range, and if someone who is being hunted stays alive for three days, they win. If a person who is supposed to be hunted refuses to play, they are whipped. If they are close to winning, General Zaroff brings out his pack of vicious and ruthless dogs, and because of the general’s unfair method of this cruel game, he has not lost one game after playing this for countless years. When General Zaroff explains to Rainsford that he will hunt again the next day and he wants Rainsford to hunt alongside him, Rainsford cannot bring himself to participate. Since Rainsford is not hunting, he ends up being hunted, and he wins. This short story applies to the first interpretation of “Character is what you are in the

In the story, A Long Walk to Waters, written by Linda Sue Park, the readers are introduced to many different individuals that were able to survive challenging environments. Those individuals used those factors, perseverance, cooperation, and independence. Those factors have allowed individuals to make it past through the harsh environments throughout their journey. Perseverance shows how those individuals kept on going without giving up. Meanwhile, cooperation represents how struggling individuals are able to work together in order to achieve their goal. Last but not least independence shows how individuals can conquer a hurdle by him or herself.

Being hunted on an island is an experience like no other, whether it is a film or a short story. “The Most Dangerous Game” started off as a short-story, but was later turned into a film. Like many other films, the director has done some adjustments that differ from the short-story. The plot, setting, and characters were revised from the original form in the short-story. However, the difference in the characters was the most influential part that changed throughout the film.
In order to be the best, you have to beat the best. We saw and read two pieces describing this phrase. The Most Dangerous Game is about a hunter, Rainsford, who thinks that animals don't have any feelings expect the fear of death and pain. When going to the Amazon to hunt for tigers, he accidentally falls of the yacht and washes up on a peculiar and dark island called Ship-Trap Island. There is only one huge house or castle where there is one man living there. His name is Zaroff and is also a hunter. The only difference is that he hunts humans instead of animals. He invites Rainsford into his house and tells him about the stuff that he does. Zaroff wants to kill him in a game he has never lost...until now. The other piece was a movie called
Some people you meet can have a major impact on your life and change it for better or for worse. Rainsfords (a man who likes to hunt dangerous animals) life was greatly changed in both a good way and a bad way by a man who lives on a tiny island in a big house named General Zaroff. Rainsford ended up on this island after he fell of a yacht he was on to go hunt an animal somewhere else but ended up swimming his way up to the shore of an island. But after about a day of being on the island Rainsford was being hunted down. While Rainsford was trying his hardest to survive on the island he was on he found a way to escape to the mainland where General Zaroff was to try and get a way off the island back to civilization. The points in this story will be somehow related to my thesis statement in ¨The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Zaroff teaches Rainsford how it feels to be like the hunted and not the hunter.
We are introduced to the protagonist and main character, Sanger Rainsford who is a big game hunter and a WW1 veteran. The story starts off with a conversation between Whitney and Rainsford discussing the island, so we can understand the reputation it holds.
In the article, “The Man in the Water” the author, Roger Rosenblatt, shows humans potential selflessness. After a plane crashes into the ocean, one man, the hero of the story, saves the lives of many before saving himself. As the rescuers were handing down the floaties to bring people to safety, every time one was given to this man he risked his life and handed it to someone else. Every time that he decides to save someone else he is one step closer to dying, and he knows that too, but instead he helps those in need around him. Although in the end he did not survive, what he did had effects on those watching. It showed people that any person could be a hero. The man in the water was a man with courage, and no fear, he sacrificed his life for the life of many who may not have survived if it wasn't for him or what he had done. While nature was against him and the people he fought against it to let those people live the rest of their life. In the article, the author, Roger Rosenblatt demonstrates the potential heroism and
In the story The Most Dangerous Game a character named General Zaroff has a passion for hunting. He has been hunting since he was born. He has hunted every animal known to man, but, then he gets tried of hunting the same animal over and over. So he discovers a new animal human flesh. General Zaroff is person of bad character because he is cruel, cowardly, and untrustworthy.
... out that nature, although it does impact the men's lives, does not have any connection to the outcome. With his short story, Crane challenges the idea that men and nature are connected spiritually. He even challenges the idea of religion by leaving the outcome of the men simply to the experience that they have. The boat, an oar, and some directions from their captain save the men from death, not a divine guide. One man simply does not make it to the shore alive. The view of man and nature within this story is somewhat pessimistic, pointing to the philosophy that we are hopeless in the face of circumstance. The point Crane makes in the end is that although people are often victims of circumstance, humans have one another to help survive difficult experiences.
"...Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter..."(Connell 216) Rainsford is a hunter that is very controlled and opinionated. He is a good person but will do what is necessary. "This is my town. I've got friends here" (Foreman 296). When Kane says this, the first thought is that he is very protective and loyal. This is exactly what Kane is. He is a loyal sheriff to his town. He is also a very good person and will also do what is necessary. All though these people are put in very different situations and live very differently, they are very similar in their logically thinking and in their
