What traits give one the ability to survive? Some examples of survivors can be found in these texts, Hyeonseo Lee: "My Escape from North Korea", "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell, and "Trapped", by Aron Ralston. The survivors in these stories show how sheer determination, clear decisiveness and a deep internal drive, are necessary to survive a challenging and dangerous ordeal. The first trait that makes a survivor is determination. Being determined, or set on a task allows them to complete/ accomplish obstacles that would stump others. For example in the story MDG by Richard Connell, Rainsford must evade a master hunter who is hunting him for three days, so he can win back his freedom and life. In this story Rainsford is determined to defeat his antagonist. He will not be beaten mentally or physically,

This is the deep internal drive, to survive. In the TEDTalk lecture by Hyenoseo Lee, she talks about all of the hardships she had to go through to escape from North Korea, and eventually help her family to escape as well. She had to live in constant fear of being caught and sent back to North Korea, where she could be sentenced to death. Lee had a drive in her to keep going and survive. She kept herself in check and leapt over all of the hurtles to now live a successful live spreading awareness about the struggles of refugees like herself. Another great example of drive is described in Aron Ralston's autobiography "Trapped". On page 5 of the excerpt, Ralston describes the horrifying things he had to do free himself. Ralston was trapped in that canyon for six days, drinking his own urine to survive. He could of simply rolled over and gave up, fading from this world. Instead, he drove forward, and made a decision to amputate himself. Without these two people's deep inset drive, we wouldn't be able to hear their daring tales
The novel Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals has many themes that are shown. One of the major themes that stuck out to me was inner strength and perseverance. Inner strength means to have Integrity of character: resoluteness of will: mental resistance to doubt or discouragement. Perseverance means steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.
Being hunted on an island is an experience like no other, whether it is a film or a short story. “The Most Dangerous Game” started off as a short-story, but was later turned into a film. Like many other films, the director has done some adjustments that differ from the short-story. The plot, setting, and characters were revised from the original form in the short-story. However, the difference in the characters was the most influential part that changed throughout the film.
In order to be the best, you have to beat the best. We saw and read two pieces describing this phrase. The Most Dangerous Game is about a hunter, Rainsford, who thinks that animals don't have any feelings expect the fear of death and pain. When going to the Amazon to hunt for tigers, he accidentally falls of the yacht and washes up on a peculiar and dark island called Ship-Trap Island. There is only one huge house or castle where there is one man living there. His name is Zaroff and is also a hunter. The only difference is that he hunts humans instead of animals. He invites Rainsford into his house and tells him about the stuff that he does. Zaroff wants to kill him in a game he has never lost...until now. The other piece was a movie called
Some people you meet can have a major impact on your life and change it for better or for worse. Rainsfords (a man who likes to hunt dangerous animals) life was greatly changed in both a good way and a bad way by a man who lives on a tiny island in a big house named General Zaroff. Rainsford ended up on this island after he fell of a yacht he was on to go hunt an animal somewhere else but ended up swimming his way up to the shore of an island. But after about a day of being on the island Rainsford was being hunted down. While Rainsford was trying his hardest to survive on the island he was on he found a way to escape to the mainland where General Zaroff was to try and get a way off the island back to civilization. The points in this story will be somehow related to my thesis statement in ¨The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Zaroff teaches Rainsford how it feels to be like the hunted and not the hunter.
When Rainsford falls off of the boat, he has to try his best to stay afloat until he can find something to latch on to. He swims vigorously until he reaches Ship-Trap Island. "Jagged crags appeared to jut up into the opaqueness... dense jungle came down to the very edge of the cliffs." It is midday and he is just searching for a place to rest when he runs into Ivan, the astonishingly large guard of the island. Zaroff, the owner of the island, joins in on their conversation about hunting. The conversation is interesting to say the least. Zaroff says, "You'll find this game worth playing…your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" Zaroff is trying to point out that he finds interest in hunting humans, and he wants to know if Rainsford will rise to the challenge. Rainsford is left with a choice to make; will he fight Zaroff, or will he decline and get killed by Ivan. The choice in this situation is pretty self- evident.
Being adventurous, coming out of your comfort zone, and taking risks will lead you to survival. Survival was the main goal for the past and still is in the present. In the 1980s, MLK day was officially declared a holiday, terrorists attacks were happening in Lebanon with the Marines, the Vietnam Memorial opened in Washington, D.C., and the Vietnam War had recently ended. All of the events all have one thing in common, which is survival. There are three short stories that proves you have to take risks and come out of your comfort zone in order to reach survival. The first one is The Quickening by Michael Bishop and was written in 1982. Lawson, the main character in The Quickening, had to break out of his comfort zone and step up to be a leader
(Hook) Do you ever wonder what it takes to be a survivor? Well look no further, read on! In these three sources, they all show what it takes to be a survivor. (Background) In the first source, “My Escape from North Korea”, Lee escapes her home country. In the second source, “Trapped”, Aron gets his arm stuck between a boulder in a canyon. In the last source, “Big Hero 6”, Baymax almost powers off trying to help Hero. (Thesis) Lee’s courage, Aron’s bravery, and Baymax’s intelligence all show their audience what it takes to be survivor.
“ I am a slow walker but I never walk back.” Sometimes it takes time but you always want to get to the end. Even if things get in your way or something is hard, you never give up and you keep pushing forward. In my opinion, perseverance is an excessively essential trait to have in the case of survival. Shackleton needed to get out of the Ice to survive, he canoed for a severely long amount of time. It was very tiring and even so Shackleton didn’t give up. In the book Hatchet Brian needed a fire to survive. He kept trying but nothing seemed to be working, he never gave up and he just kept going.
The Endurance party looked death in the face several times yet beating the odds, they survived. While some of their success can be contributed to luck and experience, Shakleton’s leadership is credited with being the factor that saved their lives. Below are the leadership traits that Shackleton exhibited throughout their journey.
For example, say a person was just laid off from a job. Sure it will be tough to not have a steady income stream and tough to not be working alongside the friends you have made, but that person has to be resilient and persevere through the tough time and head back out on the job hunt. Almost anywhere would be looking to hire someone if you search deep enough. For another example, let’s say someone very close to you in your family has passed away. It will be a very tough mourning period, but everyone in the family has to be there for each other and be resilient, not letting the sadness take over. Humans can be resilient if they want to be, it’s only a matter of when they want to
“One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard Rainsford.”
Slavomir Rawicz had to keep a strong mindset during his journey in order to survive. “We said little but we derived strength from each other, from our mutual determination to see it through alive” (Rawicz 57). Rawicz had extreme perseverance which he needed to survive. “From their high ground the entrenched Federals watched the guns do their terrible work… and on the rebels came, encouraging one another, telling one another it would be all over soon” (Golay 112). Despite the terrible hardships the groups endured, they continued doing what they had to. They had perseverance, even in the hardest times. Perseverance is a necessary part of the mindset required to continue during hard times. Sometimes the only way to go in order to survive is forward. “I found myself croaking at the others to get up and keep going. There is nothing here, I would say. There is nothing for days behind us. Ahead there must be something. There must be something” (Rawicz 179). Rawicz refuses to stop or turn around - his mindset was too strong. “Within seconds, scores of Federals were dead or wounded. Next in line, Colonel John Andrews’s brigade came on over the dead from Kimball’s regiments, some of the men slipping in grass now wet with blood” (Golay 97). Both quotes show people continuing during hard times. The perseverance needed to do what these people did is nearly unimaginable. The inspiration of human drive is largely affected
In June 1985, British mountain climbers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates ventured the unclimbed western face of Siula Grande, a 21,000 ft. high peak that is located in the Peruvian Andes. Simpson and Yates were both aware that what they are aspiring is nearly impossible because if something gone wrong it can be serious, which may lead to death, and there is no rescue available; in addition, mountain climbers before them who attempted to reach the mountain’s summit never achieved this goal. However, this didn’t stop them from climbing the west face of Siula Grande. They want to climb the mountain mainly because “it was just brilliant fun.” (2009). When people are aware that they are getting their selves in a detrimental situation, they still continue to do what they want to do. In my opinion, I believe people behave this way because they just want to try something extraordinary or they want to prove something to someone; but in Psychology, people behave this way because of motivation. Motivation is defined as the process “that makes a person move toward a goal.” (SparkNotes Editors, 2005); a motivation can be intrinsic, extrinsic, or both. Intrinsic motivation is a type of motivation which causes an individual to act or engage in activities to enhance their self-concept, while extrinsic motivation is a type of motivation that causes an individual to act in such a way for external awards. In Simpson’s and Yates’ case, they are both experiencing intrinsic and extrinsic motivation; despite of getting their selves in danger, they still yearn to reach the mountain’s summit because of interest, enjoyment, and rewards.
E) In the detailed story “Trapped” on page 2, Ralston begins brainstorming ways to get out of being trapped under a rock. He comes up with about 5 ways to escape. A) Ralston is showing intelligence by figuring out ways to get out of being trapped. He is cool under pressure and uses quick thinking. He also shows common sense by eliminating dumb ways to escape. E) Also on pages 1, 2, and 3 of “Trapped”, Ralston begins to figure out how to ration his supplies to keep him alive. A) This also shows his intelligence because he is using his smarts to keep himself alive and as well as he can be in his situation. He moderates what he eats and drinks. He knows how to keep himself going and it works. L) Aron Ralston is a survivor because he is uses his intelligence to survive difficult
It takes little character to point a gun and pull a trigger, but it takes mountains of courage to accept a challenge in which you are already defeated. Nothing to do but reverse fate, overturn the thoughts and predictions which stand looking down with a grin upon its face. This feat may be impossible, but not totally forsaken, for courage prevails over cowardice. Courage, bravery, selflessness, all attributes necessary for winners to possess.
