My writing assignments that I have chosen to represent my growth were the Into the Wild essay as well as the Of Mice Men Essay. I chose many others but I wanted to talk about these two specifically because I feel they show evidence of everything I have wanted to achieve since the first semester. Both of them exemplify my wide vocabulary as well as my current sentence structure. The following quote shows evidence of my new use of vocabulary and sentence structure “ First of all, to justify the killing of Lennie, a modern day example of euthanasia and mercy killings that most people are familiar with, are the acts of Dr. Jack Kevorkian. Recognized as Dr. Death, Kevorkian was guilty of one hundred and thirty counts of physician assisted suicide.”
In the novel Of Mice and Men and ‘The Scarlet Ibis’, the characters Lennie and Doodle both have their dreams destroyed. Another reason as to why they cannot fulfill their dreams is because they both are handicapped. One point as to why they cannot fulfill their dreams is because they are dead. Lastly Doodle and Lennie were not accepted in normal life. Doodle’s and Lennie’s dreams are destroyed and altered their lives as well as everyone around them.

When Curley's wife met a man in her childhood that offered her to be an actress but the chance went away and she later died. Then Curley wanted to be a professional boxer but the dream never happened and he became a farmer then got his hand broken for trying to be tough. George and Lennie were going to buy a farm to live off the fat of the land then Lennie had to get in trouble and George had to give up the dream and kill Lennie for what he had done.

When asked about John Steinbeck’s career, people often refer to Steinbeck as a playwright, journalist, and a well-known novelist. The book Of Mice and Men is a popular novel by John Steinbeck and a required read for most high school students. Most of Steinbeck 's novels have a central theme focusing on the relationship between man and his environment. The American dream for George and Lennie, two of the main characters in Of Mice and Men, is to have a place of their own, to be respected, and to work hard for everything they earn and deserve. In Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, the land and a hope of a better life becomes the talisman of an American dream for Lennie and George that is left unfulfilled.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
For my Final Reflection Essay I attempted to focus on the most obvious adjustments I made from writing high school papers to producing college level essays. This approach compelled me to examine a few of the papers I submitted in high school and look back on the steps I took to write them. By reviewing my previous work I realized that during Dr. Kennedys English 111 class I have effectively learned how to apply an outline, utilize research, and incorporate that research into my final paper. English 111 has helped me to understand the importance of the multiple steps of writing a great college level essay by forcing me to complete each step individually. My overall performance in this class has been above average and I have really demonstrated dedication to improvement.
In the beginning of the year I was not a strong writer; the first three essays we wrote I consecutively received a 4,5--, and 3 on the AP scale. My form and structure are not always the best. In one of our more challenging essays, the Rhetorical Analysis Essay my form and structure weren’t as strong as they should be. As stated before, I made the mistake of not staying focused on the rhetorical elements of my topic and venturing my own personal opinion in the essay, which crowded and weakened my form and structure. Continuing with Murray’s path, the development of my essays is based on the rubric. I always seek to include information that the rubric is essentially telling me to include, but sometimes I fall short of developing my thoughts enough. The dimension of my essays also has inconsistencies. I tend to have a problem of expanding into great detail on one point of my essay leaving another point barely expanded upon leaving my essay disproportionate. Finally, the last thing writer’s look for in their essay is their own voice. Thomas Osborne in Late Nights, Last Rites, and the Rain-Slick Road to Self Destruction states “I strive for a good grade, and will work as hard as possible to achieve one, but there is a voice in the back of my head that is effectively scoffing at the ridiculousness of some assignments and expectations that I have had to complete and live up to.” My voice sometimes gets lost in assigned essays when I try to fulfill certain standards that are put upon me. First thing I noticed as fantasy was the toad. Not at first, but Winnie kept talking about the frog at the house, then the woods, at the lake, and back at the house when she gave it the “water”. From limited jobs to low income, women were treated as worthless and weak. In this essay, I discuss how historians say women were treated in 1920s and 30s and how women’s rights have progressed. I will also show that the way historians described women’s rights in the 1920s is the same as how they are depicted in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men.
Lennie represents the segment of people who do not get much attention and is insecure because of the differences that set him apart from the rest of the world. This idea helps make clear that society feels the need to judge out of their fear of differences. Therefore, Lennie is unique in more ways than others, because of mental challenges, which makes him feel like an outcast: Evidence is shown in the following scene where Lennie is relieved to see George. “You ain’t gonna leave me are ya George? I know you ain’t” (Steinbeck 103). This little sentence spoken by Lennie shows how much doubt is put into his mind when it comes to his worth, because of the incidents that always occur because of his actions. Thomas Scarseth strongly believes that John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men is a book that is worth teaching. He clearly proves this point in the text, "A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men." In the excerpt we read, Scarseth provides several points as to why Of Mice and Men is a teachable book; this story has objectionable yet necessary traits, provides a theme about a limited world, and clearly displays all of this with an uncomplicated structure. Like Scarseth, I also believe that Of Mice and Men is a story that offers well-developed lessons.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next.
