Dorothy M. Johnson’s Some Went West novel and The Hanging Tree short story share symbolism, characterization and the connecting themes of culture clashing and feminism through the eyes of men and women to reveal the experiences of nineteenth century women and their fates.
For example, Some Went West and The Hanging Tree both share the theme of clashing cultures. In both novels, Natives and European settlers are present in the plot and are the two groups that cause conflict throughout the books. “Whenever danger from Indians threatened, the men hurried to drive their livestock into the protecting fort, seized their weapons, and prepared to defend their families.” (Johnson 2) In Some Went West the Natives were a threat to European settlers and vise versa …show more content…

In The Hanging Tree women are perceived as housewives while in Some Went West women were seen to be whatever they wanted and more. “...they weren’t hunting husbands; they were seeking jobs.” (Johnson 54) While some chose to stay back with their husbands and start a family; many wanted more. Most nineteenth century women headed west in search of a job to pursue their biggest dreams. For example, Bethenia Owens-Adair became a doctor and was independent as well as Fanny Kelly who proceeded on to formulate a novel about her experience as a captive. Many people were against these two women who wanted to pursue their dreams ,including their families, but they did it anyway because they believed they could. The families of these women sometimes disowned their own children because of the decisions they made when choosing a pathway to follow. During this time period, it was a shock for a woman to remain single but several women did, rejecting each proposal that came their way. Feminism is important in both these books because it is a beacon of light for all the women reading the novels to receive the message that women can accomplish anything they set their mind
