Romeo was supposed to get a message from a friar but he never showed up and instead Balthasar told him that Juliet was found dead and he Romeo tells him “come, cordial and not poison, go with me to Juliet’s grave; for there must I use thee.” (V.i) Romeo believes that she is dead and he wants to go to go see her on the death bed and say his last goodbye. Once he gets there Romeo wants to find the guy that sells a death potion because hes planning on killing himself but what he doesn’t know is that Juliet will be waking up right when he gets there, and he dies in front of her eyes. In West Side Story, Maria saw “the bullet struck [Tony] full in the chest and whirled him around in a confusion of pain and sound…” (158) Chino killed Tony right in front of her eyes because he killed their gang leader and her own brother, Bernardo. This was all because of their love for eachother and what occurred when the Sharks found about their marriage. As a result, their love ended with a tragic
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a story of two young lovers. These two hearts, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet belong to feuding families. The family feud causes them to keep their love a secret and therefore only Romeo, Juliet, Benvolio, the Nurse and Friar Lawrence know of their love. Romeo and Juliet are able to look past the feud and let themselves fall in mad love with the other. They let themselves do almost anything for the other and at times it seems like too much to do, even for the one they love. Although fate and character traits play a key role in the play, ultimately Rome and Juliet’s personal choices lead to their downfall.Fate originates all of the conflicts in Romeo and Juliet, from when they met until they die.
In plays, as in real life, individuals’ actions can change the course of events in theirs, as well as, other individuals’ lives. In both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story, the lovers were forced to take their own lives or be killed because of fate and the actions of others.
As it is with any work that is based on something else, it is the differences as well as the similarities that make both the original and the inspired appealing. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story continue to portray the common themes of hatred and violence. However, because Juliet and Romeo’s relationship is so altered by fate, they are less affected by the violence in their society than Tony and Maria are.
These stories are similar in many ways, so much it is kinda hard to miss some of the iconic scenes stolen from Romeo and Juliet. For example the balcony scene happened after the party and was when Romeo and Juliet could talk in secrecy. This happened right outside Juliet's home on a balcony. In West Side Story it is basically the same situation, the scene is right after the dance, they are outside Maria's home and she is on a fire escape. They talk until Anita calls for Marira, and in Romeo and Juliet the nurse interrupts them. The Nurse and Anita are looked at as similar roles in their stories. This shows how the scenes are truly similar. The next similarity is both stories focus around
The language used in these two scenes is quite different. In Romeo and Juliet the majority of the scene is of the two lovers confessing their undying love for each other using beautiful language and many metaphors. They also discuss marriage and serious commitments to each other. In Westside Story, this scene is spent singing to each other, which I find, makes it more romantic but has less tension. They also don’t seem as serious about commitment towards each other.
In the course of the play, Romeo and Juliet immediately fall in love. Also, they know they are meant for each other and therefore decide to get married. After this marriage, there was a brief moment in time where everything was perfect. They are married, in love and there is nothing stopping them from being together. This however quickly changes after a fight that leads to death. Once Romeo is banished from Verona for the penalty of murder, love grows tremendously between the couple and drives the need to be together. The marriage between Romeo and Juliet is hidden from their parents, so Montague decides to arrange a marriage between her and Paris. With all the conflict arising between Juliet’s family, Friar Lawrence creates a plan that unfortunately does not succeed. His plan for Juliet is to tell her father she will marry Paris then go to bed with no one, not even the nurse. After, she will drink a potion to make her seem dead for forty two hours and then have a messenger tell Romeo about it. He will have her put in a vault to wait for Friar to bring her out so she and Romeo can elope. The plan was perfect until tragedy occurs, Benvolio had seen Juliet dead and immediately tells Romeo about it. The result is Romeo and Juliet murdering themselves and the play had a tragic ending. Overall, young, innocent lovers die, through no fault of their own but a simple mistake. “How oft when men are at the
Two lovers, different in beliefs, yet the same in thoughts and feelings, are set to have a tragic ending in their life story. In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare portrays differences between the love of Romeo for Juliet, and the love of Juliet for Romeo. Many people often wonder why this love between Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet did not turn out for the best. It is not their love for one another that finally breaks them apart from the world, it is the way they love one another. The couple struggled to the death trying to make their passionate love work out with each other, but their many differences kept coming up in their lives and getting in the way of their love. While Romeo is a Manic lover and Juliet is an Erotic lover, their love is more likely to be star-crossed.
Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how prejudice can teach you how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.

During the time period of musicals, plays, and movies, there were two big musicals and movies that really got the attention of many individuals. These musicals and movies were Romeo and Juliet, and West Side Story. West Side Story was a love story about a Puerto Rican girl named Maria and a Caucasian male named Tony, as well as gang violence in the streets of New York between the Jets and the Sharks. The musical was performed on Broadway in 1957, which then became a movie in the year of 1961. Romeo and Juliet was a love story between a boy named Romeo and a girl named Juliet. Although there are many similarities and the fact that West Side Story was based off of Romeo and Juliet, their styles and plots differ but are also significantly alike.
When the friar hears of this, he devises a plan so that the two lovers can be together. The major climax of the play comes when the friar gives Juliet a potion that will make it seem as though she has died, when in fact she is alive the whole time. While in Mantua, Romeo mistakenly hears that Juliet has actually died and he goes to lay by her side. Just as he takes a vile poison and dies, Juliet awakens to find her love lying dead at her side. She cannot fathom living in a world without Romeo, so she takes his sword and ends her own life.
“The only man I love is the son of the only man I hate….” The play, Romeo and Juliet, as well as the musical, West Side Story, are two inspiring and tragic love stories with many similarities, however unique differences in time, plot, characters, and themes are present. Romeo was the son of Montague and Lady Montague. Romeo is good looking, smart, and sensitive. “Though impulsive and immature, his idealism and passion make him an extremely likable character.” Romeo was in love with Rosaline, but is now in love with Juliet and he is only sixteen. “Thus, Shakespeare gives us every reason to question how real Romeo’s new love is, but Romeo goes to extremes to prove the seriousness of his feelings.” Romeo secretly marries Juliet. He would rather die than live without the one he loves the most, Juliet. Juliet was the daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. Juliet is young girl who doesn’t know much and doesn’t think about love and she is only thirteen. Romeo is the son of Juliet's family’s enemy. “Because she is a girl in an aristocratic family, she has none of the freedom Romeo has to roam around the city, climb over walls in the middle of the night, or get into swordfights.” Juliet looks past Romeo getting into a fight with her cousin because she loves Romeo. The Nurse is Juliet's closest friend. “... Though she’s willing to shut the Nurse out of her life the moment the Nurse turns against Romeo.” (Sparknotes)

The only difference between the love between Romeo and Juliet and other scenarios such as West Side Story, and Splendor in the Grass, is that these social situations make the story interesting, therefore, a wonderful love story. In the story, West Side Story, there is a huge social disagreement between two New York City gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The Jets are primarily a white territorial gang that has been sworn to defend there street from a Puerto Rican gang, the Sharks. This social difference had made these two groups sworn enemies of each and there fore there, it was known that there was to be no interaction between the gangs unless it was expressed in hostility. At a dance on night that both of the racial groups were attending, Tony, a Jets veteran, had his eye caught by a young girl, Maria, who happened to be the younger sister of the Sharks leader, Benardo.
