The play “West Side Story” was like a modern version of “Romeo and Juliet”. Although “Romeo and Juliet” was older, it had many similarities with “West Side Story” and shared some major themes such as feud, love, and being true to yourself. The characters in the plays were also alike. For example Romeo and Juliet were equivalent to Tony and Maria. Even though the plays “West Side Story” and “Romeo and Juliet” were based on the same idea, they had numerous differences. An important similarity between “Romeo and Juliet” and “West Side Story” is that two people from opposing sides fell in love with each other. Romeo was a Montague and Juliet was Capulet. The Montagues and Capulets had a feud that lasted many years, it lasted so long that Romeo and Juliet …show more content…
One night at a party, Romeo and Juliet saw each other and they fell in love immediately. They were inseparable and wanted to spend every minute with each other. But their families hated each other and didn’t support their relationship. In the 1960s there were two gangs in the West Side of Manhattan. It was the Jets who were Irish and Italian and the Sharks who were Puerto Rican. Tony was a member of the Jets and Maria was part of the Sharks. One day at a dance, Tony and Maria set eye on each other and it was love at first sight. They wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. But they belonged to two gangs who strongly disliked each other. Maria’s friend Anita didn’t support her relationship with Tony. Anita told Maria that Tony only wants one thing and he will leave her lonely. Both Tony and Maria and Romeo and Juliet faced criticism about their relationships. Another thing that “West Side Story” and “Romeo and Juliet” has in common is the

The archetypal tragedy of two star-crossed lovers, separated by familial hate, is a recurring theme, which never fails to capture the minds of the audience. It is only at great cost, through the death of the central characters that these feuding families finally find peace. This is an intriguing idea, one antithetical. I have chosen to analyze both Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet and Laurent 's West Side Story. The purpose of this essay is showing how the spoken language is utilized in these different plays to meet differing objectives. The chosen scenes to further aid comparison and contrast are the balcony scenes.
West Side Story is the story of two lovers from rival gangs who cannot be together. This musical was heavily inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The music was a combination of jazz, pop, and classical which was influenced by Aaron Copland, which was Leonard Bernstein's friend. This
The play West Side Story, by Arthur Laurents, is based upon the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Despite a few differences, both works, in essence, have the same plot. The source of violence in Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story is the ever-present hatred between families and between gangs, although, because of the "star-cross’d lovers" motif in Romeo and Juliet, the hatred plays a larger role in producing the ending of West Side Story than it does the ending of Romeo and Juliet.
West Side Story, a film directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, is a relatively modern adaptation of William Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet. As both, the film and text, explore the perceptions of deep-rooted feud between two parties, it also includes the influence and pressure it has on young love. Although numerous similarities are encountered throughout the play and movie, there are distinguished concepts obtaining great difference. However, the two mediums of this tragic love story have three prominent issues of story, themes and characters instilling both similar and dissimilar concepts.
The language used in these two scenes is quite different. In Romeo and Juliet the majority of the scene is of the two lovers confessing their undying love for each other using beautiful language and many metaphors. They also discuss marriage and serious commitments to each other. In Westside Story, this scene is spent singing to each other, which I find, makes it more romantic but has less tension. They also don’t seem as serious about commitment towards each other.
In the film, West Side Story. The two rival gangs, the jets and the sharks meet at the school disco. They refuse to dance with any member. of the opposing gangs, which results in a dance showdown. At different ends of the dance hall, Maria and Tony lay eyes upon each other.

After Rodgers and Hammerstein II’s Oklahoma! West Side Story is considered as the most significant musical. The theme of this musical was different than the contemporary comical musicals in the sense that the plot had a tragic ending.
Realities of West Side Story Filmed in 1961, West Side Story is a modern-day telling of Romeo and Juliet. Two youths struggle with their forbidden love as two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, duel. At the end of the film, Maria says, “You all killed him [.] with hate!” This is a universally acknowledged theme that hate can kill. Love is a beautiful thing, it always works out in the end. Everyone is always happy and no problems occur. West Side Story, a musical by Leonard Bornstein based on Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet parallels a love story of two star-crossed lovers. The play takes place in 1961 in New York City. This musical displays importance because it shows that nothing can overcome the power of love. This play is based on a love story between the main characters of Maria and Tony. Theses two are from different gangs that trouble to get along. They are from different gangs that do not get along at all. Roughly two hundred blocks make up Manhattan’s West Side, which stretches from Central Park West to the Hudson River. For the most part, the street youths
Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how prejudice can teach you how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.

William Shakespeare has provided some of the most brilliant plays to ever be performed on the stage. He is also the author of numerous sonnets and poems, but he is best known for his plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Romeo and Juliet. In this essay I would like to discuss the play and movie, "Romeo and Juliet", and also the movie, Shakespeare in Love. The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is set in the fictional city of Verona. Within the city lives two families, the Capulets and the Montegues, who have been feuding for generations.
Romeo and Juliet’s love story was miserable but captivating in Shakespeare’s play, while in West Side Story it was musical and lively. In Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet fall in love, but their families hate each other because of bad history. In West Side Story, Tony and Maria fall in love, but they are in different groups. Jets are American’s, and the Sharks are Puerto Ricans, both of the groups hate each other because they are of different cultures and they can’t accept each other. Also because they are fighting over the territory.
