Compare/Contrast Essay “And remember, as it was written, to love another person is to see the face of God.” -Victor Hugo. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a tragic, romantic play. The story takes place in place Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day. It was produced in the 16th century. Romeo and Juliet is the tale of two lovers. The Remains of the Day deals with the conflicting emotions and feelings of a butler named Mr. Stevens. It was produced in the 21st century. Romeo and Juliet and The Remains of the Day are extremely similar in regards to theme and characters, and although there are contrasting elements in the setting and plot, there are still similarities to be found.

One of those themes is that “Love can be immensely misunderstood even if it is mutual”. The other theme is “One could choose to disown or embrace his or her heritage or name”. In Romeo and Juliet Romeo says this when we first encounter him, “She’ll not be hit With Cupid’s arrow. She hath Dian’s wit” (1.1.199-200). Romeo is stated that Cupid has not made her fall in love with him. Since Romeo is in love with a woman (Rosalind) who won’t replicate his love, it displays the theme of unrequited love. When Juliet meets Romeo on her orchard she tells him to rid of himself of his family name so that they will remain loyal to each other. In The Remains of the Day. Stevens says the following about the man he serves. “I trusted in his lordship’s wisdom. All those years I served him, I trusted I was doing something worthwhile” (243). This correlates to the theme because Stevens remained loyal. He did this although his lord had questionable ideals. Stevens tried to mask his sorrow when he met Miss. Kenton again. Stevens felt said to here she was in a happy marriage because he still harbored romantic feelings, even if he cannot straight out admit it.
