The story of the epic hero is seen in many examples around the world, from one of the most well know cartoon, SpongeBob Squarepants, to the novel The Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum. The Wizard of Oz is later turned into film and a well-known play . It is a fun and interesting story of an epic. In their own way, the novel The Wizard of Oz and The Odyssey are examples of epics. Both stories tell of a strong hero who covers a vast amount of distance to achieve their goal, with Dorothy traveling from the Oz back to her home, Kansas, and Odysseus traveling from Troy back to Ithaca. She must restrain herself and make sacrifices just like Odysseus. In the play Dorothy was torn because the air balloon that would guide her back to Kansas was gone and there was no other way for her to get back. All of her friends, the tinman, the scarecrow, and the lion were trying to comfort her. Then suddenly the tinman asked, “Don’t be sad. Don’t you want to stay with us?”. All of her friends began to question her too. At first she was conflicted, but when she remembered that her aunt was still waiting for her back home, she rejected their offer with “there is no place like home”. She refrain herself from the temptation of staying with her friends and arrived back home safely with the help from the Good Witch of the North. It shows her determinations and faithfulness to her family.
Epic heros can be found in many different narratives. They illustrate the obstacles that we may face in life and guide us to the right path that will help us on our own perilous journey. In The Wizard of Oz and The Odyssey, the heroic main characters faced dangerous challenges, however with determinations and a goal they overcome all the challenges.
