For Man is Man and Master of His Fate
Most of people look for a miracle. They hope that they can meet God or find a wish-making tree to get three wishes. Just like one of the Japanese anime called “Fate Zero”,many people fought for the grail which could make their wishes come true. That’s because people all have desire. What would you do if you have three wishes? Would you wish for money, fame or power? Different people will make different choices, and it will bring them different fates. But we should always remember a word written by Lord Alfred Tennyson: “For man is man and master of his fate.” There are two stories about three wishes, “Monkey's Paw” written by W.W. Jacobs and “The Third Wish” written by Joan Aiken. There are many similarities between these stories. However, they have different motives.
According to the story, the "Monkey's Paw", the protagonists, Mr. White and Mr. Peters both got three wishes coincidentally. "Mr. White received a magic monkey's paw which can give people three wishes from a soldier and Mr. Peters saved the king of the forest, and the king gave him the chance to realize three wishes." However, the king and Mr. White’s friend warned them that it

Peters and Mr. White had different personalities. So they make different choices when they were in the same situation. In “Monkey's Paw”, the Whites had not got much money, but they were a very happy little family. Mr. White and his wife had a son who was young and laughed a lot. They loved him so much. To make this poor family get rid of poverty, Mr. White wished for two hundred pounds through using the monkey's paw. Unfortunately, they got the money at the expense of the death of his son. He was abandoning happiness by all means. He lost the most important thing in his life—his son. Although he tried to use the second wish to save his son, his life even became worse. Three wishes only brought bad luck to
It is inferred that the story is set in 1902 or 1901, around thetime it was published. The author’s purpose for writing this story was to explore the dangers of wishing and or trying to manipulate fate. Throughout the entire story everyone is wishing for things they want and need in life, and stuff should never come that easy. The author wrote this to show that life should be accepted as it comes and there are consequences if one tries to manipulate it for his/her own benefit. This is actually stated in the story.
The monkey’s paw is a gothic tale. The tale is about a family of three named the Whites. When the Whites are given a magical monkey’s paw by an old family friend – Sergeant Major Morris - they also inherit three wishes. Herbert, the descendant of the family takes the paw for granted and had no certainty in the paw. That day they make their first wish for two hundred pounds, nothing happens. That night, after the old couple had departed to bed, Herbert sees a simian-like face in the fire. The following day, Herbert, goes to Maw and Meggins, where he works. In the meantime a worker from the Maw and Meggins cotton mill comes to visit Herbert’s parents and delivers devastating news. He claims that Herbert had been crushed by machinery whilst working which led to his death, but they were entitled to compensation of two hundred pounds. The couple are absorbed by grief and after the funeral Mrs White suggests that they use the monkey’s paw to wish Herbert back to life. Mr White is very hesitant to do this, but after a lot of persuasion and fuss from his wife he agrees to the idea. After making the wish the couple retire to bed. When the candles burn out, and Mr White goes to retrieve more there are loud knocks at the door. Mrs White runs to the door, and after a few struggling minutes, manages to get the door open. A loud...
Apess was the child of a mixed-race shoemaker, and a slave/indentured servant. While he was young his parents split and Apess and his siblings were left in the care of their grandparents. Apess describes his life with grandparents to be awful. He writes that when his grandparents are under the influence of
No matter how harmless the wish sounds, there will always be a price to pay.
If you were granted three wishes in your lifetime, what would you choose? Would you ask for something out of this world, or simply an endless amount of something? Would you be clever with your wishes or wasteful? Within the two stories of Aladdin and “The Fisherman and the Jinnee”, there are characters that encounter a time where they are with a Genie/ Jinnee whether that Genie is granting you three wishes or the Jinnee has three rewards for releasing him. In the next few paragraphs I will be comparing and contrasting both stories to one another, leaving us to think was it destiny or fate, or simply just a moral story?
Additionally, Sergeant Major Morris knew the consequences of wishing upon the monkey's paw, saying on page 377, "I don't know what the first two [wishes] were, but the third was for death." This implied that the previous owner of the paw had suffered such severe consequences that he wished away his own life. Although Sergeant Major Morris refrained from giving the
One of the monkey’s fingers went down so the man knew he now had two wishes left. The man went into the living room and saw the money on fire by the fire place.
The theme in both stories are the same it is be careful what you wish for. I know this because in the “Monkey's paw” even when the man says, “ I warn you of the consequences if you must wish, wish for something sensible” Mr.white still wishes for 200 pounds this was not a very sensible wish it was actually very selfish and childish. As a result That same day a man walked up to his door and says that Mr.white's son was caught in equipment and that, “they wish to present
“‘ There wasn’t another colored family for miles around.’”(pg.70). Him being the only black boy in the neighborhood made him feel lonely. It triggered how it was hard to be the only different one around other people. He felt lonely once again and gave up on his dream once he was overpowered by Curley’s wife. He wanted to be contributed to the idea of having a farm with George, Lennie, and Candy once they all settle down. He is intelligent and works hard even though he has a bad back. He wanted racial prejudices, but he did not receive that treatment at the barn until Lennie arrived and Candy joined in.
Jacobs in 1902. The story is based on the theme fate and greed, which affected the main characters. This is a short story that the tone is supposed to be suspenseful, and the plot will leave the reader to foreshadow on what's happening next. The story takes place is around the Whites family home, which is called Laburnum Villa. The story is also possibly taken place in 1902, because that was the date in which is was published by W.W. Jacobs. The plot of the story is started in the Whites house, where a sergeant-major who recently returned from India, visits Mr. and Mrs. White and their son Herbert. The sergeant-major pulls out a monkey’s paw, then explains the 3 wishes that you can grant. He then attempts to throw in in the fire before Mr. White grabs it. The sergeant warns that there are consequences to anyone who uses the paw. After the sergeant leaves, Mr. White grants one wish from the paw, which is 200 pounds to pay off the house. The next day, Herbert dies from an accident in work, and the company pays 200 pounds in compensation. This is a major scene in the story when the theme fate and greed is used in the story. Fate is used in this part, because the Monkey’s paw represented the fate or destiny. Every time you take a wish, a consequence will occur. After Herbert dies, Mrs. White insists to Mr. White to wish for their son to come back. Afterwards, they hear a knock on their door, then Mrs. White rushes to the door to see
What if genies were real? what if we had something that could give us 3 wishes of anything we wanted in the world? Everything too good to be true always comes with a price. In the story I am going to writing about a paw that is able to grant 3 wishes to whom ever gets ahold of it. The paw I am going to be writing about was giving to the White family by a family friend, Sergeant Morris. Could making a life changing wish end the life of a loved one?
Don’t take things for granted. “The Monkey’s Paw” W.W. Jacobs. “The Monkey’s Paw” is a short story that takes place in England with a family called the Whites. They are given this paw that by a man named Mr. Morris, who does not want it anymore because of the fate it has brought him. The Whites decide to make their three wishes and not listen to the warning from Mr. Morris but regret it in the long run.
The cause in the Monkeys paw is that the Whites son dies. The White’s son shockingly dies in a machine, “he was caught in the machinery,” said the worker. The White’s feel responsible because of the wish they made for money. The wait to see if their son was still alive after wishing on the monkeys paw brought great distress, so much so that Mrs. White fainted. The Monkeys Paw creates suspense, by showing us all the emotions from the characters while they wait to see if their son will return with the last wish. In the Monkeys Paw if they did not make a wish for money, then their son would still be alive. If these things wouldn’t have happened the White’s
First of all, “The Monkey`s Paw” is a cause-and-effect story that talks about a family and a monkey`s paw that would grant them 3 wishes. The family of 3; Mr. White (father), Mrs. White (mother), and Herbert (son) lived in a small parlor of Laburnum, bumped into a man called Sergeant-Major Morris as he stumbled
I can infer that this was Mr. White's third wish because he is aggravated and he wants to wipe this whole thing. His first wish was for two hundred pounds, but wishing that left his son dead, which led to many other curses. So by wishing for his son to be dead again, he may be able to take out the consequences that came after that.
