For Man is Man and Master of His Fate
Most of people look for a miracle. They hope that they can meet God or find a wish-making tree to get three wishes. Just like one of the Japanese anime called “Fate Zero”,many people fought for the grail which could make their wishes come true. That’s because people all have desire. What would you do if you have three wishes? Would you wish for money, fame or power? Different people will make different choices, and it will bring them different fates. But we should always remember a word written by Lord Alfred Tennyson: “For man is man and master of his fate.” There are two stories about three wishes, “Monkey's Paw” written by W.W. Jacobs and “The Third Wish” written by Joan Aiken. There are many similarities between these stories. However, they have different motives.
According to the story, the "Monkey's Paw", the protagonists, Mr. White and Mr. Peters both got three wishes coincidentally. "Mr. White received a magic monkey's paw which can give people three wishes from a soldier and Mr. Peters saved the king of the forest, and the king gave him the chance to realize three wishes." However, the king and Mr. White’s friend warned them that it

Peters and Mr. White had different personalities. So they make different choices when they were in the same situation. In “Monkey's Paw”, the Whites had not got much money, but they were a very happy little family. Mr. White and his wife had a son who was young and laughed a lot. They loved him so much. To make this poor family get rid of poverty, Mr. White wished for two hundred pounds through using the monkey's paw. Unfortunately, they got the money at the expense of the death of his son. He was abandoning happiness by all means. He lost the most important thing in his life—his son. Although he tried to use the second wish to save his son, his life even became worse. Three wishes only brought bad luck to
Additionally, Sergeant Major Morris knew the consequences of wishing upon the monkey's paw, saying on page 377, "I don't know what the first two [wishes] were, but the third was for death." This implied that the previous owner of the paw had suffered such severe consequences that he wished away his own life. Although Sergeant Major Morris refrained from giving the
The theme in both stories are the same it is be careful what you wish for. I know this because in the “Monkey's paw” even when the man says, “ I warn you of the consequences if you must wish, wish for something sensible” Mr.white still wishes for 200 pounds this was not a very sensible wish it was actually very selfish and childish. As a result That same day a man walked up to his door and says that Mr.white's son was caught in equipment and that, “they wish to present
In today’s society, one does not consider how one person’s dream can affect others. In the story Of Mice And Men written by John Steinback, two men search for a job that will secure their ambitions, but find out that “The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men” can result in “nought but grief and pain.” One of the two men, Lennie, acts as a burden with his child-like personality, is dangerous because of his lack of intelligence combined with prodigious strength, and spreads hope to others with his innocence.
Don’t take things for granted. “The Monkey’s Paw” W.W. Jacobs. “The Monkey’s Paw” is a short story that takes place in England with a family called the Whites. They are given this paw that by a man named Mr. Morris, who does not want it anymore because of the fate it has brought him. The Whites decide to make their three wishes and not listen to the warning from Mr. Morris but regret it in the long run.
Herbert and his father's first wish is for two hundred pounds. But to get that two hundred pounds the family’s son died. This is ironic because the family only asked for the money and nothing else. This paw had become a curse, not a blessing.
First of all, “The Monkey`s Paw” is a cause-and-effect story that talks about a family and a monkey`s paw that would grant them 3 wishes. The family of 3; Mr. White (father), Mrs. White (mother), and Herbert (son) lived in a small parlor of Laburnum, bumped into a man called Sergeant-Major Morris as he stumbled
1 The Monkey’s Paw “The Monkey’s Paw” is a short story written by the author W. W. Jacobs. Thestory was first published in England in the collection The Lady of the Barge in 1902. In the story, the person who receives the paw is granted three wishes.
Apess was the child of a mixed-race shoemaker, and a slave/indentured servant. While he was young his parents split and Apess and his siblings were left in the care of their grandparents. Apess describes his life with grandparents to be awful. He writes that when his grandparents are under the influence of
The cause in the Monkeys paw is that the Whites son dies. The White’s son shockingly dies in a machine, “he was caught in the machinery,” said the worker. The White’s feel responsible because of the wish they made for money. The wait to see if their son was still alive after wishing on the monkeys paw brought great distress, so much so that Mrs. White fainted. The Monkeys Paw creates suspense, by showing us all the emotions from the characters while they wait to see if their son will return with the last wish. In the Monkeys Paw if they did not make a wish for money, then their son would still be alive. If these things wouldn’t have happened the White’s
The sergeant pulls out the monkey's paw and talks about its magic before throwing it in the fire. Mr. White takes it out so that he could keep and use the monkey's paw. One should work for what they want, not wish for it. But if one does wish, then they should be careful what they wish for. If the wish is free, then there must be a consequence because nothing is truly free.
“‘ There wasn’t another colored family for miles around.’”(pg.70). Him being the only black boy in the neighborhood made him feel lonely. It triggered how it was hard to be the only different one around other people. He felt lonely once again and gave up on his dream once he was overpowered by Curley’s wife. He wanted to be contributed to the idea of having a farm with George, Lennie, and Candy once they all settle down. He is intelligent and works hard even though he has a bad back. He wanted racial prejudices, but he did not receive that treatment at the barn until Lennie arrived and Candy joined in.
In the story “The Monkey Paw” it shows examples of, how for every action there are consequences good or bad. Mr. White shows us that when he uses the monkey’s paw he wished without thinking of the consequences. Mr. White wished for 200 pounds of money. However, when the White’s received the 200 pounds they got news that their son Herbert was dead. In the text, it states “He was caught in the machinery, said the visitor at length in a low voice. Caught in the machinery, repeated Mr. White, in a dazed fashion, yes...I was to say that Maw and Meggins disclaim all responsibility, continued the other. They admit no liability at all, but in consideration of your son’s services, they wish to present you with a
If you were granted three wishes in your lifetime, what would you choose? Would you ask for something out of this world, or simply an endless amount of something? Would you be clever with your wishes or wasteful? Within the two stories of Aladdin and “The Fisherman and the Jinnee”, there are characters that encounter a time where they are with a Genie/ Jinnee whether that Genie is granting you three wishes or the Jinnee has three rewards for releasing him. In the next few paragraphs I will be comparing and contrasting both stories to one another, leaving us to think was it destiny or fate, or simply just a moral story?
One of the monkey’s fingers went down so the man knew he now had two wishes left. The man went into the living room and saw the money on fire by the fire place.
What if genies were real? what if we had something that could give us 3 wishes of anything we wanted in the world? Everything too good to be true always comes with a price. In the story I am going to writing about a paw that is able to grant 3 wishes to whom ever gets ahold of it. The paw I am going to be writing about was giving to the White family by a family friend, Sergeant Morris. Could making a life changing wish end the life of a loved one?
