‘Aaaah!’ In an instant, he swiftly arose and hearkened the blood-curdling shriek, echoing from the old mansion, whistling across the dark wooded forest, and into his humble home. Immediately, his heart plummeted, and a cold sensation passed through his body, known as absolute terror, that the unimaginable had occurred; almost as a routine action, he sprinted to the phone and dialed the numbers nine, one, one. The scene depicted above is an inference from the short horror story, “Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe, in which the author creates suspense by using literary devices. Similarly, W.W. Jacobs, the author of the story, “Monkey’s Paw” also uses literary devices to make the story scarier and flow smoother. Therefore, the authors of the stories stated above use the …show more content…

Jacobs, use symbolism to show the evil within their antagonists. According to the “Tell-Tale Heart” which elucidates, “But I found the eye always closed, and so it was impossible to do the work, for it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye.” (Paragraph 4). This proves that within the narrative, the eye represents evil and invokes anger into the protagonist. This causes the protagonist to murder the old man because of the feeling the eye creates within his body. Therefore, the antagonist, or the vulture eye further advances the plot of the story by inducing the climax and introducing the problem. Additionally, in the “Monkey’s Paw” which demonstrates, “Those who interfered with it, did so to their sorrow.It has caused enough mischief already.” (Paragraphs 26 and 36). This citation proves that the paw has already created a multitude of problems in the past. As a result, interactions with the paw should be avoided however, the family does not listen to the warnings, which causes the main problem to occur, or the death of Herbert.
