Comparing two things and making connections between the two can sometimes be very difficult. For example comparing a newspaper article to a movie at first could seem like they have nothing in common. But by thinking hard enough and thinking outside the box a little bit there is always something to find in common with just about anything. For example the newspaper article “Ultra Runner Karl Meltzer Sets Appalachian Trail Record, Fueled by Beer and Candy” and the movie Forrest Gump could be very similar yet very different at the same time. The newspaper article “Ultra Runner Karl Meltzer Sets Appalachian Trail Record, Fueled by Beer and Candy” is about a forty eight year old man named Karl Meltzer who runs the entire Appalachian Trail. Throughout Gump’s whole life he faced a lot of adversity, but nothing ever set him back. One day against the odds of Gump’s walking problem he starts running and just keeps running and running and running. This compares to Meltzer’s story because against the odds he finished the entire trail on only beer and candy. Just like Gump running and running until he can not run anymore. Another comparison between the two is characters is that Forest his whole life no matter what the challenge was he conquered it no matter the time it took, and always followed his dreams. Just like Forest Meltzer his whole life chased his dreams by moving to Utah just to live somewhere he could do his passion, skiing. Along with always following his dreams, it took Meltzer not only one or two tried but three tries to finally conquer the trail. Most people would have given up after the first try at the trail. Some would come back after training a lot harder and maybe try the trail one more time. But not many people after failing two times would come back a third time. Just by thinking a little bit comparing two things can be very
A trait that makes Forrest Gump a great hero is that he is protective, of his friends & Jenny. Jenny was constantly being mistreated & hurt. Whenever Forrest was there & saw this, he punched that guy right in the face to defend her. Jenny also had a horrible childhood & was abused by her dad too. Her house reminded her of what ruined her life, so Forrest had it bulldozed. She never had to look at that awful place ever again. After Jenny died, Forrest looked after Forrest Jr. He taught him to read & do many other things. He cared for & protected his family to the
As well, metaphors exists everywhere. They influence the way we process information in our minds. Without the idea of comparison in order to achieve a better understanding of material, everything would be abstract and the way we perceive the information would be completely
As John Muir once said:” When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” In this quote he tells how in everything there is some type of connection that ties it to the rest of the world. By seeing one connection in the world, we end up seeing a thousand more scaling from small to large. In this essay you will see connection in things like Kat Von D, Racism, and In-n-Out to tattoos and California.
“But most of the time you don’t think. No point. Instead, you exist in a kind of mobile Zen mode.”(101) and “‘How did you get around that tree back there?’ … ‘I don’t remember it.’”(123) shows the lack awareness he had on the trail. When doing something difficult and boring it is dreadful and lasts longer but, when the activity is made into something fun or stimulating it makes it go by faster. However, in Bryson’s situation, not thinking and just walking takes away some the difficulties of the trail. It distracted him from the reality of it. Instead of thinking about how long you walked, you can think about other
Is Bill Bryson, the author of a Walk in the Woods, an Appalachian Trail hiker? To most people, the only type of AT hiker is someone who hikes it all at once, also known as a “thru hiker.” Bryson has hiked a large amount of the AT, along with Katz, and has come across many obstacles along the way. He has encountered a bear, obnoxious hikers, and especially harsh weather conditions. None of these hurdles have seemed to stop Bryson. They have reduced his progress but have not stopped him completely by any means. Critics have expressed their irritation with Bryson and his negativity towards all of the impediments on the trail. For example, one critic said, “As a hiker laying in a strategy to thru-hike the AT in a couple years, I was looking forward to a light and lively tale. Boy was I disappointed. Grumping about the cold, rain, mud, vermin, tourons, monotony, ugly people and places, and an inept hiking partner didn't let up.” (Anonymous: A Protracted Whine. Book review of A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. November 2, 2007) Although many tough critics do not consider him to be an AT trail hiker, he should be considered an AT hiker because he has hiked most of the trail and has written a best-selling novel to inform people of his long, vigorous journey.
are many themes that at first don’t appear to be related but once given a closer look have
there is no doubt that there are themes that allow one to create a comparison between the two books.
Overall, the resemblance between the two stories’ themes and meanings is remarkable.
Meagher, D. (2008b). Understanding Analogies: The Analogy Item Format and the Miller Analogies Test. Pearson.
Throughout the movie there are numerous occasions in which the comparisons between the two are noticeable.
It is a great example of how persevering through life’s obstacles can make life even better than before. Being different creates many challenges for Forrest, however, he shows inner strength as he fights through these challenges. Along with this, Forrest Gump shows how having support while trying to escape a dark path will make success easier. Therefore, the movie reveals that life will not always be perfect, but it is important to persevere through the adversity that it is filled with. Ultimately, no matter the circumstances, any obstacle can be
The term ‘analogy’ is very vague in nature, but when used in this context, we assume that the behavior of other people is in many ways analogous in reference to causes. These causes being behavior directed from sensation or thought. It is apparent and observable that people or beings other then I behave in ways in which we behave when placed in different situations. For example sadness or the nature of anger or happiness can be seen in others. Others then can and do react to different causes similar to the way in which I do as well. Another consideration is that of shared experience. Russell uses the example of two friends having a conversation in which memoirs are explored. These two individuals have shared experiences together. They eventually discover that each other’s memories aid each other in recalling information forgotten with time. (Russell 89)
One of the thigs that many people love to do is make decisions, and every day good and bad decisions are made. One of the things that people are not aware about is that their decisions are based on analogies. In “Metaphorically Speaking” by James Geary this is proved. Geary mentions a study in which “students were asked if they would help a country that had been invaded” (00:06:34). There were different scenarios in which one of the past wars, such as World War II, Vietnam war, or a war which was historically neutral was being compared to the country that was being invaded. This caused the students to compare one of the past wars to the country that was being invaded and see how similar these events really were. This had a great impact on their
At this time there is an obvious comparison between the two that will become reoccurring throughout the story.
