Evil can be a scary thing many things can influence on why a person may be considered evil or do evil things.People do things because they were influenced by others or by their own selfish desires,
Macbeth and Tonya Harding share similar traits and actions in their personalities.Macbeth and Tonya are both very ambitious people and willing to do anything to get to the top.Tanya conspired to injure another competitor that was considered her rival. “In 1994, she was banned for life from the U.S. Figure Skating Association after pleading guilty to hindering the prosecution following the attack on fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan”. Tonya does this in order for Nancy not to be able to compete and she can easily win without Nancy standing in her way.Because

Tonya’s strong ambition to win, she resorted to doing something terrible to another competitor just so she could win.Similarly Macbeth conspires to kill King Duncan to be the new king of Scotland.
Macbeth states that “Cannot be ill, cannot be good: if ill, Why hath it given me earnest of success, Commencing in a truth? I am thane of Cawdor: If good, why do I yield to that suggestion Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair And make my seated heart knock at my ribs, Against the use of nature? Present fears Are less than horrible imaginings: My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, Shakes so my single state of man that function Is smother'd in surmise, and nothing is But what is not.Macbeth is now having thoughts about wanting to kill Duncan in order to become king and be at the top.Macbeth also uses the witches predictions as an excuse to go ahead and kill Duncan since the other predictions …show more content…
came true he’s sure the last one will as well. From here on out Macbeth’s ambition does take over and even commits treason by killing Duncan but as long as he became king he does not care about that. Anyhow Tonya had been also peer pressured by society to do well and that drove her ambition. Many people watched her performances and did not want to let anyone down. This drove her into getting desperate and injuring Nancy Kerrigan so she would not be in the competition and her fans, family could watch as she wins. In that case Tonya was already set on being the best and if anything or anyone got in her way she would do something about it. Another example of their similar traits would be that they are both greedy individuals. Macbeth was greedy to become king, although he was already pretty well set by recently becoming thane of Cawdor but he wanted more.Macbeth could have lived a good life as Thane of Cawdor and would have faced no consequences. However as his greed got stronger, he could not live as simply just thane of Cawdor and decided to kill Duncan so he could become the new king. Tonya was already a popular figure skater with many fans, but wanted a gold medal more than anything.Tonya was a two-time Olympian and a two-time skate America champion.Although she had already accomplished many good things as a figure skater she wanted more. However her greed for the gold medal was enough for her to risk her career and attack Nancy.Macbeth was also greedy for power to the point where it was more important to him than his friends and the people in the kingdom. “I will advise you where to plant yourselves,Acquaint you with the perfect spy o' th' time,The moment on ’t; for ’t must be done tonight,And something from the palace; always thought That I require a clearness. And with him—To leave no rubs nor botches in the work—Fleance, his son, that keeps him company,”.In order to not be suspected as the killer of Duncan he orders for murderers to kill Banquo and his son Fleance. If it's a success than he could be in power without worrying about anyone in his way. To think that his greed for power is more important than someone's life and even someone who wasn't even involved with Macbeth's plan. Lastly an example of them being the same in their actions is that they both lack ethic (EDIT). Tonya does not see that what she is doing is bad. She felt there was nothing wrong in hurting Nancy and succumbed to her supporters desire for her to win. 'Because how could that seem possible that someone you know, I mean we were competitors, but...
we were friendly. So to think that anyone you know would deliberately try to hurt you, yeah, it's too bizarre to understand.' Nancy was surprised that Tonya would do that since you expect an athlete with such with caliber such as Tonya to follow the rules. Nancy truly wanted to believe that Tonya was not involved with her incident. However Tonya doesn't think that she is wrong because of her lack morality and feels it is the best thing to do for her own chances of winning. Macbeth also shows that he lacks ethics similarly to Tonya. Macbeth kills king Duncan although he is Thane of Cawdor and is supposed to be a honorable warrior.”You are welcome here. By making you thane of Cawdor, I have planted the seeds of a great career for you, and I will make sure they grow.”(act 1,scene 4, lines 28-31). The thane of Cawdor should be someone that the king can depend on to take care of the people of the kingdom. King Duncan assigned this role to macbeth since he trusts him to be a good leader. However macbeth ditches his morality and decides to commit treason and kill Duncan for becoming king for his own personal
gain. Humanity is a very complex and most people will do what they think is right. In order for that some sacrifices must be made even if it means to do something that is evil, not fair, and for their own selfish reasons. Macbeth and Tonya can both be considered very similar people for what they did and how it affected others as well because of their actions.
After a long and hard battle, the Sergeant says to King Duncan, “For brave Macbeth,-well he deserves that name,- disdaining fortune, with his brandish’d steel, which smok’d with bloody execution , like valour’s minion carv’d out his passage till he fac’d the slave;” (1.2.16) . This quote shows that Macbeth is viewed as a valiant soldier and a capable leader. However, it does not take long for the real Macbeth to be revealed- a blindly ambitious man, easily manipulated by the prospect of a higher status. His quest for power is what drives his insanity, and after having been deemed the Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth’s ambition can immediately be seen. In a soliloquy, Macbeth says, “Present fears are less than horrible imaginings; my thought, whose murder yet is but fantastica, shakes so my single state of man that function is smother’d in surmise, and nothing is but what is not” (1.3.140). Macbeth has just gained more power, and his immediate thought is of how to gain an even higher status as king. He imagines how to kill Duncan, and then is troubled by his thoughts, telling himself it is wrong. This inner struggle between Macbeth’s ambition and his hesitation to kill Duncan is the first sure sign of his mental deterioration. Although Macbeth does kill Duncan, he questions whether or not he should to do so, which is far different from how Macbeth feels about murder later in the play. Macbeth becomes king, and this power leads
As the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare went on, the friendship and comparison of Macbeth and Benito Mussolini grew. Both of their actions forced them into power and made them the historical features they are today. The cause of their terrible actions lead them to their death. Throughout the play Macbeth, Macbeth shows many similarities to Benito Mussolini because both used other people to push them to power, lost that power and were both brutally killed.
Following the meeting with the witches, Macbeth begins to think about killing Duncan and taking the throne by force. Macbeth becomes concerned with the witches prophesies and wants to learn more, as we can see from what he says after they leave, "Would they have stayed!" (1.3.82). After this, he begins thinking about his desire to be king. We can see that he is thinking about murdering Duncan from his soliloquy, "Stars, hide your fires, /Let not light see my black and deep desires;" (1.5.50-51). Macbeth has begun his path to corruption.
Macbeth is captured by his wild ambition at the opening of the play when he and Banqou meet the three witches. The witches tell Macbeth that he is the Thane of Cawdor, and later will be king. They tell Banquo that his sons will be kings. Instantly Macbeth started to fantasize how he is going to be king. He understood that in order for him to become king he has to kill Duncan. “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical”(Act 1 Sc. 3, p.23). He was pondering about the assassination until the moment that he could no longer control his emotions. “To prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which overleaps itself and falls on the other-“(Act 1 Sc. 7, p.41). Because of his “vaulting ambition” he killed Duncan.
There are two kinds of evil, moral and natural. Moral evil is things like murder, rape, stealing, terrorism, etc. Natural evil is things like suffering and unpleasantness typically as a result of moral evil. Evil is that which has no power of its own. Evil is darkness, a negation of light. Its power is in us, in our fear of it, in that we consider it a "something" worth responding to.
Duncan trusted Macbeth with his life, but Macbeth ended up turning against him for his own greed and ambition to become king. He was manipulated by wife, and he had an idea in his head given to him by the three witches. The witches state “All hail, Macbeth, that shall be king hereafter!” meaning you shall be king one day. Lady Macbeth states “too full o’ the milk of human kindness” meaning he is too good to follow through with the plan of killing Duncan. He does want to seem like less of a man so these factors contributed to the cessation of
There was a common saying, “Behind every great man there's a great woman”. The men, Macbeth and Winston Smith in Shakespeare’s Macbeth and George Orwell’s 1984 may not be considered as the “great man” however, both Lady Macbeth and Julia are good examples that can be presented as the “great woman” behind the men. Both Lady Macbeth and Julia do an excellent job of pretending to be someone who they are not, they are not only affecting the men in their lives to rethink their previous position but also have a bad ending accompanied with physical and psychological issues.
In the beginning of the play, Macbeth is described as being “valiant”. He is a skilled warrior, who is loyal to his king and his country. Almost single-handedly, he wins the war for Scotland. He defeats many of the enemy soldiers, including a traitor, all in the name of his king. But, when three witches encounter Macbeth and his friend Banquo, Macbeth’s ambition begins to grow. They tell Macbeth that he will be Thane of Cawdor and King. Soon after, Macbeth meets with King Duncan. He informs Macbeth that he is the new Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is astonished, and from then on he is obsessed with being king. His ambition begins to become ruthless when Duncan proclaims that his son Malcolm is the Prince of Cumberland, and therefore, the heir to the throne: “The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step/On which I must fall down, or else o’erleap, /For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires;/Let not light see my black and deep desires:/The eye wink at the hand; yet let that be/Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see.” (I,iv,48-53) At this moment, Macbeth, realizing that they stand in the way of the witches’ prophecies, decides that both Duncan and Malcolm need to die for him to be king. As soon as Macbeth kills Duncan, he enters into a world of evil. Later in the play, Macbeth’s ambition becomes increasingly ruthless. He kills his best friend Banquo, and almost kills Banquo’s son, Fleance, because he believes they would stand in the way of his reign. The witches told Banquo “Thou shall get kings, though thou be none.” (I,iii,67) This means that Banquo himself would not be a king, but that his successors would be. Macbeth tries to prevent this by killing Banquo and his son Fleance.
Macbeth’s ambition to obtain power convinces him that it is his destiny to become King of Scotland, and that he should do anything to fulfill that destiny, even if it involves him committing tremendously immoral acts such as murder. After Macbeth realizes that the witches may actually speak the truth due to the second prophecy (Thane of Cawdor) becoming true, he begins to have an eerie and frightening thought of him killing his king and friend, Duncan, in order to ac...
“Present fears are less than horrible imaginings. My thought, whose murder is yet but fantastical, shakes so that my single state of man that function is smoldered I surmise and nothing is but what is not.” Macbeth as you can see is thinking about the witches’ prophecy of him becoming king. Macbeth knows that Duncan must be killed if he wants to acquire the throne, and the thought of Duncan’s murder is very disturbing to him. Macbeth desires to become king, but his ambition is halted when he thinks of the consequences that follow if he were to get his wish. However when Malcolm is chosen to become Prince of Cumberland Macbeth knew that if he did not take any actions then he wouldn’t be king. The reader can see that the ruthlessness that lied in Macbeth is coming out when he says “The Prince of Cumberland – that is a step On which I must fall down or else o’erleap, For in my way it lies. Despite the fact that Macbeth is a ruthless individual Lady Macbeth makes him look like a saint. After Lady Macbeth reads her husband’s letter she sees an opportunity to become queen that she probably never thought about. Lady Macbeth’s desire for her husband to become king is stronger than Macbeth’s own desire for the throne. After Lady Macbeth learns that Duncan is going to visit Inverness she begins plotting to kill him even though her husband does show hesitation to kill Duncan.
She went through some psychological incapacity, and had no ability to make decisions. While Macbeth, when hit by guilt, could still make decisions and make some imprudent acts such as murder again. Even though the murdering caused him to experience a glimpse of insanity, he could still control his mind so resentment would not take over. In the end, the readers can observe that Macbeth, even being affected by guilt so many times in so many ways, is still stronger than Lady Macbeth. He could survive the play without committing suicide because a feeling was controlling him.
In Act I Macbeth is very uneasy in his and Lady Macbeth’s decision to kill Duncan. He says, “We shall proceed no further in this business. For he hath honored me of late.” (I.7.31-32) This is an unmistakable example of how Macbeth is not fully confident in his decisions. He feels guilt and anguish, as does Lady Macbeth, for she will not commit the murder herself, due to the fact that King Duncan looks too much like her father. At this point in the play, it is quite questionable as to weather either of the conspirators will consummate to the killings. Duncan’s death can be identified as the turning point of Macbeth’s sanity. This is when Macbeth starts to clearly display numerous symptoms of schizophrenia. O One of the most common symptoms of schizophrenia is the inability to distinguish between reality and fantasy. Macbeth displays this characteristic as he speaks vehemently to an empty chair, which he believes is the ghost of his old friend Banquo, who he just recently had killed. He says, “Prithee, see there! behold! look! lo! how say you? Why, what care I? If thou canst nod, speak too. If charnel-houses and our graves must send Those that we bury back, our monuments Shall be the maws of kites.” (III, 4) Macbeth is the only one to see the ghost, not even the audience is allowed by Shakespeare to see this apparition. After this, his mental stability begins to deteriorate throughout the course of the play. Guilt and obsession are also among the leading features associated with schizophrenia. After Macbeth is coaxed into killing Duncan, he is plagued by the blood, which he has spilt. However, he still manages to kill anyone who threatens his reign, even those who are very close to him. One could say that his obsession with maintaining his royal sta...
Macbeth, whom initially was a very reasonable and moral man, could not hold off the lure of ambition. This idea is stated in the following passage: "One of the most significant reasons for the enduring critical interest in Macbeth's character is that he represents humankind's universal propensity to temptation and sin. Macbeth's excessive ambition motivates him to murder Duncan, and once the evil act is accomplished, he sets into motion a series of sinister events that ultimately lead to his downfall." (Scott; 236). Macbeth is told by three witches, in a seemingly random and isolated area, that he will become Thank of Cawdor and eventually king. Only before his ambition overpowers his reasoning does he question their motives. One place this questioning takes place is in the following passage:
Seeking for greater power, Macbeth murders Duncan who is the king at that time, which caused a great pain for the kingdom. Duncan is a great king, but just not a so good human reader. He has never been aware of Macbeth. He never have a thought that Macbeth might be a danger, who is willing to kill him for the throne. On the other hand, Macbeth does not accept to be just a general for the rest of his life. He wants a greater power, higher position than he is having at the time. Because of the suggests from the trio witches: “ All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!/ All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!”(1.2.49-50), Macbeth has the thinking about killing the king to take his throne. By calling Macbeth the Thane of Cawdor, they give Macbeth the thought that being a king is his fate. On the night Macbeth is planning to murder Duncan, the Old Man see many strange events: “And Duncan’s horses (a thing most strange and certain),/ Beauteous and swift, the minions of their race, /Turned wild in nature, broke their stalls, flung out/ Contending ‘gainst obedience, as they would/ Make war with mankind” (2.4.14-18). It creates a scary feeling in the kingdom, and means something bad will happen to the kingdom.
He tells her that he is now Thane of Cawdor and how the witches predicted it. He also tells Lady Macbeth about the witches predicting that he would become king. Lady Macbeth is powerful and lac humanity from the beginning. Lady Macbeth has fiery ambition to become queen. Lady Macbeth suggests that should murder Duncan right away. Macbeth denies, because he does not have a reason to kill Duncan. Duncan is a great king everyone likes Duncan he is a good king. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that he is not a man if he does not commit this crime. A man would kill a real man is violent if he cannot commit this crime he is no man to her “When you durst do it, then you were a man…be so much more the man…” (1.7.49-52). Lady Macbeth is a major problem to Macbeth because if she was not in the picture Macbeth would not have murdered Duncan. Lady Macbeth keeps telling Macbeth that he is not a man if he does not kill Duncan. She is manipulating him into thinking that he has to kill Duncan to prove that he is a man and become king. Lady Macbeth tells him that he will be more of a man than ever after he murders Duncan. Macbeth feels as if a lot is expected of him and that he has to prove himself to his wife that he is a
