Tina Dam Mr. Ha English 1H/ Per. 4 07 June 2016 Lord of the Flies and “The Second Coming” The shared tone of the texts from the readings, “The Second Coming” by William Butler Yeats and the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, show that evil can lie in the presence of anything deemed as innocent. The tone of the two texts give a sense of despairing to the reader as the boys become belligerent to fight and convert into savages. Likewise on the poem, “The Second Coming” by William Butler Yeats, the text directly states, “The ceremony of innocence is drowned” (Yeats 6). Both of these texts reveal how evilness can fester in an innocent being. The evilness cannot be stopped as the Lord of the Flies illustrates in the following excerpt: “At once
the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. There were no words, and no movement but the tearing of teeth and claws” (Golding 153). Words of “beast”, “tearing of teeth”, “struck”, and “bit” all display what an animal would do. With no knowledge of the allegory and just reading this section, anyone would think of the boys as the predator against prey. In reality, the beast, a nine year old boy, is the one being torn apart by boys around his age who fear of a monster unknown. Fear of the evil that is really within the boys, only cause chaos to reign over power. Alongside the tone of the allegory, the poem displays the fear of the anti-Christ figure which only leads to the destruction of civilization. Both texts present a symbol of civility being broken down. At ease, in both “The Second Coming” and the Lord of the Flies the tone can be inferred through a connection of how evil can tear down civilization as well as the innocence of people.
Through tragedy, two all male societies are established as they fight for survival, in similar circumstances. The situations the groups now find themselves in are less favourable and require them to work together. Cooperating with each other is key to their survival, as well as gathering and rationing resources. One group of men is trapped in a mine where their only resources come from a small emergency centre underground. This takes place in a movie called The 33 directed by Patricia Riggen. The other story is about several young boys stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash that has left them with no adults. It is a popular novel called Lord of the Flies written by William Golding. In both the Lord of The Flies and The 33, we see
William Golding’s Lord of the Flies portrays the lives of young British boys whose plane crashed on a deserted island and their struggle for survival. The task of survival was challenging for such young boys, while maintaining the civilized orders and humanity they were so accustomed too. These extremely difficult circumstances and the need for survival turned these innocent boys into the most primitive and savaged mankind could imagine. William Golding illustrates man’s capacity for evil, which is revealed in man’s inherent nature. Golding uses characterization, symbolism and style of writing to show man’s inhumanity and evil towards one another.
Mankind is innately evil. The allegorical novel, The Lord of the Flies, allows for little interpretation about human nature. William Golding depicts the idea, “evil is an inborn trait of man” (Golding). Throughout the novel the children who have crash landed on the island begin to uncover their savage nature. Although all of the children somehow succumb to a heinous behaviour, Jack, Ralph, and Roger become most noticeably corrupt. Ultimately, it becomes clear that malicious intent is intrinsic in mankind.

Through the process of showing how the boys arrive on the island conditioned by society to act civilized and leave the island at the end more savage and more evil, Golding succeeds in trying to depict how man possesses inherent evil. The concept of inner evil in man can be connected to the inner evil in Brutus, from the play Julius Caesar by Shakespeare. While Brutus is a trusted advisor and good friend to Caesar, he still conspires and is involved with the assassination of Caesar. His desire to murder, even as he holds a prominent position among Caesar’s advisors, provides proof of his inherent evil. Golding ultimately seeks to prove in the Lord of the Flies that evil is the prevalent force in man and that it takes precedence over even childhood innocence.

In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding and the movie, Castaway, directed by Robert Zemeckis, both stories involve a person(s) getting stranded on an island. In both the novel and the movie, a group of boys and an individual demonstrate that over time that fear and the will to survive is the only thing that is driving them to make the decisions they make. They will do things that display savagery and uncivilized behavior in order to beat nature. While some may argue that the urge to gain power is what leads one to make decisions and act upon it, it is clear that fear and the will to survive is what many people act upon
When viewing the atrocities of today's world on television, the starving children, the wars, the injustices, one cannot help but think that evil is rampant in this day and age. However, people in society must be aware that evil is not an external force embodied in a society but resides within each person. Man has both good qualities and faults. He must come to control these faults in order to be a good person. In the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding deals with this same evil which exists in all of his characters. With his mastery of such literary tools as structure, syntax, diction and imagery, The author creates a cheerless, sardonic tone to convey his own views of the nature of man and man’s role within society.
Inherent Evil of Man Exposed in Lord of the Flies & nbsp; The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding used a group of British boys beached on a deserted island to illustrate the malicious nature of mankind. Lord of the Flies dealt with the changes the boys underwent as they gradually adapted to the freedom of their society. William Golding's basic philosophy that man was inherently evil was expressed in such instances as the death of Simon, the beast within the boys, and the way Ralph was fervently hunted. & nbsp; Through the story, Simon acted as the Christ Figure. The death of Simon symbolized the loss of religious reasoning.
Whether people will deny it or not, it is certainly apparent that human nature is all too evil; for there is a demon that lurks in everyone, just waiting to come out. Humans can build civilizations and attempt to deviate themselves from such basic instincts, yet nevertheless, evil is not something that they can run from; it is not something that they can defeat. William Golding knew this, and so in his book, Lord of the Flies, he presents so by portraying a microcosm of a society in the form of little British schoolboys. Their plane, in an attempt to escape from the raging war, came to its own demise as it was shot down, leaving the boys stranded on an island they know nothing of. When placed on a deserted island, a group of strangers banded together to try to survive. They decided on a leader, problem-solved, fought off a beast, and formed their own society, even if it was somewhat flawed. This was the situation in the famous TV show, Lost. The Lord of the Flies and Lost are similar in these many different ways, with the exception that the show featured a tribe of adults instead of children. That just proves how difficult it is to maintain order in a society; even the adults struggled with keeping it peaceful and civilized. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding presents a broken society of savage boys fighting one another to suggest that man’s capacity for evil is brought out by the need for power and control.
In both novels, the main characters are isolated from any form of true civilisation. In Lord of the Flies, the boys find themselves on a desolate island which is devoid of any human life due to a plane crash, whereas in The Road the Man and Boy live in a bleak, destroyed America in which almost the entire population has been wiped out due to an unnamed natural disaster. Because of the lack of resources and essentials, it is inevitable that the main characters have to find means of surviving – in Lord of the Flies; this is mainly through hunting and building shelter and in The Road, the Man and the Boy trek along the barren landscape in search for any remaining food they can find.
In Lord of the Flies, Golding proves that fear draws out man’s inner evil and barbarism. Within the novel, Golding uses characterization of the boys and symbolism of the beast to show the gradual change from their initial civility to savagery and inhumanity. Learned civility, order and humanity become ultimately futile in the face of fear. The author teaches that without logic, fear consumes endlessly. He shows that fear clouds the mind, thus making it absolutely imperative to maintain reason and logic throughout life. Fear will always end in a fate worse than death for those who survive it.
The Lord of the Flies by author William Golding is a tale of a group of boys who have been stranded on a deserted island as a result of a plane crash. The boys are faced with plenty of challenges that they all choose to make different choices for such as turning towards savagery for Jack and towards civility for Ralph, which ultimately brings the entire groups sanity to the edge. Lord of the Flies provides one with a clear understanding of Golding's view of human nature. Whether this view is right or wrong is a point to be debated. This image Golding paints for the reader, that of humans being inherently bad, is a perspective not all people share. Lord of the Flies is but an abstract tool of Golding's to construct the idea of the inherent evil of human nature in the minds of his readers.
