One of the important components of software engineering is the platforms. There are many various types of computing platforms. A few of these include AmigaOS, Linux, Windows, Solaris. These examples are just a few of many different computing platforms. The types of computing platforms can be differentiated into three different categories, which include operating-system examples, software frame work examples, and also hardware examples. Each of the different platforms has slightly different requirements and means of maintenance. Even the required standards for the platforms differentiate depending on which platform being used. Platforms are a vital part of systems and for applications, and are available in many various forms. The basis of this paper is mainly to observe the differences and similarities of four of these platforms. The particular platforms being compared and contrasted with each other include: Linux, Microsoft Windows, UNIX, and Macintosh. The purpose is to look at the purpose of each of these platforms and also to perceive the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Platforms are an important component of software engineering in that they are the basis in allowing the tools to be available on platforms which are less expensive and therefore allowing the tools to become more available. I was very interested in computers and technology as a child, both playing games and building fake parts for them. Still in elementary school, I was fascinated by these computing machines, spending hours on end working with DOS to satisfy my curiosity. Around my middle school years, Windows became graphical, and I found interest in even more computer games with even greater experiences and capabilities. Windows was the dominant operating system at the time, but I was soon to find there was a whole different world out there of operating systems. One of the major historical failures that comprised security is the UNIX operating system (with GNU Emacs installed) at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories and other military laboratories. UNIX operating systems were widely being used by a vast number of computer professionals and research scientists back in those days. Though the operating system cannot be categorized as completely insecure, I believe that the default settings (which eventually helped the intruders to take advantage of this) are one of the main failures that lead to other events mentioned in the book.
The purpose of this document is to compare and contrast three different Linux vendors in regards to their specific server and workstation OS products they offer in the workplace. In addition, I will discuss the price for each vendor, specifications, performance, and reliability. The three vendors I would like to discuss are Arch Linux, Red Hat Enterprise, and Ubuntu. My thesis is to show why Mac is better than PC. The debate has continued Mac vs. PC. Buying a Mac is like buying a Mercedes Benz it is quality and unique. Buying a PC well it’s like buying a bad copy of Mac. If your time has value you should use a Mac. There are hundreds and thosands of PC’s but they all are a waste of time and money. Tell your Windows friends that Windows 95/98 etc is a great graphical user interface, and it ought to be: It was borrowed from the Mac OS!
Windows based computers are more practical, easier to use, and more versatile than Macintosh computers. There has always been much debate over which is the better system. There are people who are die-hard Macintosh users, and there are people who are the complete opposite, and naturally people sitting somewhere in between. The fact remains that the majority of home and business users own Windows based systems because of their versatility in all areas.

The debate between whether to buy Macintosh or buy a PC has been ongoing since Microsoft first introduced Microsoft Windows in November 1984. Apple Macintosh had developed its first personal computer, mouse and graphical user interface (GUI) in January of 1984. The debate has grown and has been the subject of many articles and even is the main high light of various websites. This frequently heated debate has even been compared to the Pepsi vs. Coke debate (Derene, 2009). While the rhetoric has continued the differences between these products has actually lessened, making it possible for some applications to be shared. Even the mechanics of the machines has become similar. Both use Intel processors, and both obtain many of their parts from the same supply companies. The operating systems of Windows Vista and Mac OSX Leopard are very similar when comparing multimedia, Internet and applications (Derene, 2009).
Google and Apple. You know, the companies that teenagers adore, adults love, and children enjoy. Google is your best friend for homework, and their phone operating system, Android, has a plethora of apps, not to mention numerous OEM's. Apple is the company that creates high end, easy to learn products. They make you pay a premium for their products ($2,000 for a MacBook Pro, everyone!). Apple is one of the few companies that doesn't have to do anything to be cool, they just are cool. One of the most popular areas of contention among computer users has always been what operating system was preferred. There have been countless advertising campaigns touting one over the other. One of the most recent would be the ad that featured one person exclaiming, “Hi, I’m a Mac” and another “Hi, I’m a PC” with intention to promote Apple over Microsoft. While Apple and Microsoft have been squaring off for many years there has been another contender rising through the ranks, Linux and its many distributions.

One organization (Nichols College), began utilizing each operating system for two very different purposes. I will explain the function of the two operating systems and how well they each performed for Nichols.
Since no two UNIX-based operating system builds are exactly alike, it is important to note that each build may have its own inherent security flaws. For example, in 2002 a buffer overflow issue existed within Linux which could potentially make all Linux builds vulnerable (PCWorld). However, this flaw involved only elements which were specific to the Linux kernel and did not impact other build versions such as those specific to Solaris. Nonetheless, while different security flaws may exist, many builds share similar security features, including the specific security aspects noted in this paper's scope.

When it comes to what makes a modern operating system ideal there are a variety of key elements. The security should be a very important part given the consistent threat of data breachers and brute force attacks. Customizability is also a valuable asset as computer users have different needs, so it needs to be considered. Furthermore an ideal operating system also is free as in freedom so users and developers can improve the code. Ultimately the security, customizability and the overall free nature of Linux make it an ideal operating system. However to fully understand why Linux is an ideal operating system analysis of its strengths are needed.
