Dinosaurs are such fascinating creatures, it’s no wonder so many people are obsessed with them. Because of this, dinosaurs have played a significant role in cinema and literature, for example, the famous blockbuster film Jurassic Park directed by Steven Spielberg and the short story “The Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury. Both of these works are centered around dinosaurs but also involve more in depth exploration of themes such as the butterfly effect and chaos theory. While these are similar at first glance, there are also many key differences between the two. Jurassic Park is a movie based on a novel written by Michael Crichton. The dinosaurs begin to follow their instincts and hunt the guests, which leads to chaos and destruction. The characters learn that some extinct creatures are better off staying dead because they are dangerous and difficult to contain. Ray Bradbury’s “The Sound of Thunder” is a short story about a wealthy hunter named Eccles who wishes to travel back in time to hunt and kill a dinosaur. Eccles and a team of scientists are sent back to prehistoric times with specific instructions given by Travis, the guide, to not stray from the path and to do exactly as he says. As the story progresses, Eccles becomes increasingly anxious and panics upon seeing the dinosaur. He runs back to the Time Machine, but leaves the path to get there. Eccles unintentionally steps on a butterfly on his way to the machine, which sets off a chain of events that would eventually lead to big changes in the future, such as the election results and language spoken.
