I believe that Juliet and Maria are so called the “engineers” of their respective lovers. Firstly, because during the setting of both their times (late fifteen-century for Romeo and Juliet and the late 50’s for West Side Story) women were not that prominently empowered to stand up for themselves specially to fight for love or even what they truly believed in. Moreover, strong women like Juliet and Maria are exceptional during their times, most importantly how they broke traditions like choosing a forbidden partner. In both their cases, from the beginning two opposing families who despise each other. Although, both strong female characters still followed for what their hearts desired and fought for their love even though it resulted a tremendous …show more content…
It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face nor any part belonging to a man. O be some other name! What’s in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet; So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d, retain that dear perfection which he owes Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, and for that name which is no part of thee Take all myself.” Further in West Side Story, the scene where Maria and Tony almost got caught by Anita in her bedroom. Obviously, Anita disagreed with their secret relationship but Maria stood up for her love and defended Tony from Anita. These quote and scene justify how these empowered women are the “engineers” of their relationship because they still fought for love and did not let anyone even their families affect their …show more content…
Trust in an incomprehensible, yet a relatable component of humanity which we are all too familiar with. It can either be found in the most affectionate of relationships, whilst simultaneously misplaced trust can result in the most inconsolable heartbreaks imaginable. Luckily, in the case of Maria and Juliet’s relationships, their trust made both their loves unconditional and unbreakable. In act 2 scene 2, Juliet showed her trust to Romeo since she expects him to come back for her “Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed. If that thy bent of love be honourable, thy purpose marriage, send me word to-morrow, by one that I’ll procure to come to thee, Where and what time thou wilt perform the rite; And all my fortunes at thy foot I’ll lay and follow thee my lord throughout the world.” On the other hand, the scene in West Side Story where Tony visited Maria in the boutique, Anita was also there, she said to him “I believe in you.” Tony replied this assurance statement “Of course, I got you.” Both scenes show how high the value of trust Juliet and Maria had for Romeo and Tony respectively. For the reason that, Juliet and Maria expect that their partners would not break this promise of trust than love. After all, I believe George Macdonald famous quote “to be trusted is greater
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both tell a story of two lovers who can not be together because of a feud. The characters in Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are similar in their actions but are different in family background and their attitudes. Two characters that are similar, but different are Tybalt and Bernardo. The two characters had different attitudes and family backgrounds.Tybalt’s attitude was more daring, while Bernardo’s waited for the trouble to come to him first. Even though, Tybalt and Bernardo both come from different backgrounds, they have hatred toward the other side and the actions toward their enemies were the similar, which cost the lives of others and themselves.

Throughout ‘Romeo and Juliet’ there is more than idealistic love shown, like the parental love from the Nurse to Juliet and the friendship Mercutio and Benvolio shared. This love had effects on everyone though because if Juliet and Romeo were known to be loved the feud between the houses may have been worsened and Juliet could've been left disowned if she had not married Paris. “But, as you will not wed, I’ll pardon you: - Graze where you will, you shall not house with me” (Act III: Sc. 5, lines 188-189).
The play West Side Story, by Arthur Laurents, is based upon the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Despite a few differences, both works, in essence, have the same plot. The source of violence in Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story is the ever-present hatred between families and between gangs, although, because of the "star-cross’d lovers" motif in Romeo and Juliet, the hatred plays a larger role in producing the ending of West Side Story than it does the ending of Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet engage in a love that they believe is the one true love. They don’t even know each other and don’t know each others personality so they can only be attracted sexually. Instead of taking things slowly and getting to know each other or on the other hand engage in a type of relationship just to satisfy each others desires they act like they have known each other for a long time and that they can’t live one without the other.
The romantic tension between Romeo and Juliet and Tony and Maria in Shakespears original play and its modern day remake, Westside Story, is what makes them have such passionate and entrancing scenes. The main reason for romantic tension in these two plays is because the two couples can’t be together like they want to be. There are many different aspects that create different quality of romantic tension in these two scenes. Although the two plays have similar plots, the romantic tension between the two lovers is very different because of the setting, the language and the circumstances in which the lovers face.

Juliet is honest with herself. Although she is aware of how dangerous it is to be interested in Romeo, she wishes to ask him to “Deny thy father, and refuse thy name;/ Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my lover,/ And I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (II, ii,
Romeo and Juliet choose their own actions through their judgments, which were caused by their belief of everlasting love. Due to their unsound and absurd attitudes, both characters are dazed by love in a puerile manner. The relationship they created was actually built on lust and desperation. Firstly, Romeo is the first character whom shows immature love in the story as a whole. Once Capulet’s party is over, Romeo’s attitude leads him to jump over the wall to Juliet’s house and exclaim to her,” And what love can do, that dares love attempt./Therefore thy kinsmen are no stop to me”(2.2.68-9). The effect of love caused Romeo to not pay attention to the consequences of jumping over the wall and talking to the daughter of his enemy. The flaw is that he is beginning to think that his love is as hard as nails. It is illogical for Romeo to think this...
The love that Maria and Tony have shows their willingness to sacrifice for each other no matter the circumstances. Despite being from two different gangs, Tony and Maria go through great lengths to see their relationship blossom. In the musical, there are several instances when Tony and Maria meet secretly without their friends or families knowing. Understanding the consequences of being caught, they still felt a profound love for each other that could not keep them apart. Maria sacrificed her entire life with her family and friends to run away with Tony. Her love was the priority and nothing else mattered except Tony. Tony was also willing to sacrifice for Maria as he puts her before his family, friendships, and values. Love brought these two together made their relationship strong against the will of others in their lives. In the musical West Side Story, and play Romeo and Juliet, Tony and Romeo display many similar
Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how prejudice can teach you how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.

Romeo and Juliet’s love story was miserable but captivating in Shakespeare’s play, while in West Side Story it was musical and lively. In shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet fall in love, but their families hate each other because of bad history. In West Side Story Tony and Maria fall in love but they are in different groups. Jets are American’s, and the Sharks are Puerto Ricans, both of the groups hate each other because they are of different cultures and they can 't accept each other. Also because they are fighting over the territory. I 'm going to be proving how the play and musical are different, even though they are based on each other.
In the play “Romeo and Juliet”, Shakespeare shows that love has power to control one’s actions, feelings, and the relationship itself through the bond between a destined couple. The passion between the pair grew strong enough to have the capability to do these mighty things. The predestined newlyweds are brought down a rocky road of obstacles learning love’s strength and the meaning of love.
