The two plays, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, have many differences and similarities. Obviously since they were both written by William Shakespeare, then they will have some similarities because a majority of writers have similar traits in how they write each play, novel, movie, etcetera… Romeo from Romeo and Juliet and Brutus from Julius Caesar have an abundant amount of similarities and differences throughout both plays. A majority of the characters had similarities and difference as well, but Romeo and Brutus’s stood out the most to the readers. Shakespeare also portrays them similarly, but give little hints of difference. Romeo and Brutus also took their own life, but for different reasons. They are from different plays, but they do have some similarities. Romeo and Brutus both caused the death of their loved ones. They both killed another individual, which caused their death. The way Romeo caused it was not all his fault. Tybalt, an antagonist in Romeo and Juliet, killed Mercutio, who was extremely close to Romeo, in a brawl of family feuds that had been occurring for an extremely long time. When Tybalt murdered Mercutio in the brawl, Romeo, in pure rage, killed Tybalt. Before the brawl though, Tybalt was trying to antagonize, but Romeo, who is much less hot headed than Brutus, continued to say that he refused to fight, but in the end he did. Shakespeare portrays Brutus and Romeo differently throughout by the way they acted to situations involving influences among them. Brutus was a people pleaser. He did everything he could to make everyone happy. When he got word that no one, or should it be said as “no one”, liked Julius Caesar, he immediately became a conspirator. It is not that he was a follower. Brutus did not follow the conspirators. He followed their views to a certain extent, but it was only because he believed no one liked Caesar and that Caesar was not fit for being a leader, it was because Brutus wanted what was best for the people around him, so Brutus went with them. Romeo, on the other hand, did it on his own thought. He was not a follower. Romeo killed a man due to anger and not to please people; it was for revenge. Romeo did not necessarily care about what other felt about him. He clearly showed it by dating his enemy’s daughter, Juliet. If he was a people pleaser then he would have joined the fight at the beginning along with the rest of his friends like he was tempted to. Brutus joined the party and killed someone, Romeo did not. Romeo did eventually join them to an extent because he was pushed by revenge to kill someone, not forced by other people. However, because Juliet and Romeo’s relationship is so altered by fate, they are less affected by the violence in their society than Tony and Maria are.
Romeo And Juliet, alongside Hamlet, is probably Shakespeare’s most performed play and has also been adapted in many forms. In Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet killed themselves due to the conflicts between the Capulets and the Montagues, Romeo and Juliet’s families. Regardless of the differences in reactions regarding the conflict between the two families, both Romeo and Tybalt are characters that act before they think, causing an unfortunate effect on the tragedy of the play.
Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how prejudice can teach you how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.
Paramount aspect of the movie and the play, the theme, were the same, and the overall messages in both were the same. For example, one main message in the stories was that love conquers all. This was demonstrated in both the play and the film when Romeo and Juliet kept secretly meeting each other even though they knew it was against their families’ wishes. In one scene of both the movie and the play Romeo and Juliet even got married and died together so that even if they could not be together on earth they would be together in death.
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is a play suffused with differences. Differences like Youth’s ideas compared with the elderly, and bloodshed with the cessation of war. The two lovers in this play had seemingly no way to control the differences that overpowered them. In the end, the ultimate resolve was death. The tragic play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, tells the story of two young people that fell in love. Shakespeare states that his play is about, “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their lives ;”(1.Prologue.6) The play took place in Verona, Italy, where two royal families, the Montagues and Capulets, go through a huge fight, which causes a tragic ending. William Shakespeare does a wonderful job taking the reader into the fight throughout the story. Romeo, a Montague, got invited to a ball in the Capulet’s household, and that’s where everything began. Romeo met the love of his life at the ball, but little did he know, he was giving up his life to be with her. Throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet go through a lot of issues together; which leads to them killing themselves, in hopes of staying together forever. Although the two killed themselves, they are not to blame for their deaths. In the play, Friar Lawrence and the Nurse should both be punished, and Romeo should be pardoned for his actions.
Brutus had a strong relationship with Caesar but a stronger relationship with Rome and its people. I think during Roman times, the only way for someone to get close to a person of high rank is if he/she is a close friend or relative to him/her. Brutus loved Caesar but feared his power and ambition. In the early acts of the play, Brutus says to Cassius, "If it aught toward the general good, set honor in one eye and death in the other, and I will look on both indifferently…,,"(act 1, scene 2, ll.85-89), as he is speaking to Cassius. "He then unto the ladder turns his back..."(act 2, scene 1, line 25). As the quote says, Brutus would not allow Caesar to rise to power and then turn his back on the people of Rome. This is the only reason Brutus would conspire against Caesar. Brutus says to himself, "I know no personal cause to spurn at him...How that might change his nature..."(act 2, scene 1, and ll.11-13)
Brutus and Caesar were both political figures who were looked up to by the people of Rome. Caesar was way more boastful by referring to himself in the third person this was different for Brutus however. Brutus is all lets self centered and is more focused on the greater good which is the condition of Rome. Another Difference is that Brutus is kills someone. Brutus kills Caesar in order to keep the current political democracy instead of changing it to a monarchy which he believes Caesar is doing. Caesar does not kill anyone in the story
