Theme is a subject or topic of the story. It can also be the lesson or moral that the creator wants to get across to the reader. In Mr. Kipling's short story, “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” I know for a fact that the theme for this story is evil is punished and good is rewarded. I know this because the antagonists do bad things throughout the story and soon die. Another example was when Darzee’s wife distracted the female cobra so that the protagonist in the story could get the eggs. However, I can see why people would think the lesson of the story is to never give up, but I know for a fact that it is wrong and I can prove it. I believe that the theme for this story is evil is punished and good is rewarded. Nag, Nagaina, and Karait are excellent examples of evil, and Rikki is a wonderful example of good. It is very clear that the protagonist in this story is Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, and Nagaina and the other cobras are clearly the antagonists. For instance, the mongoose was rewarded with love and trust from his family when he defeated Nag and Nagaina. Another example is when Rikki’s family helped him overcome the flood. They were rewarded with a mongoose by their side to protect them at all times. The last example was when Darzee warned Rikki that Nagaina was coming up behind him. Darzee was …show more content…
rewarded with trust and love from Rikki. The antagonists in this story are selfish, stingy, and greedy, which is why I am putting them under the evil side of the story.
To start off, Karait is a young cobra and a bully. He also taunts Rikki with the words “I am death!”. Unfortunately for him he dies instantly. As can be seen in the story, Nagaina makes a very wrong decision and leaves all of her eggs to catch Darzee’s wife. As a result all of her eggs get exterminated by Rikki, except one. Another example was when Nagaina missed her strike on the protagonist and it ended up with her getting bit on the tail. The last example is when Nag faced up to fight the protagonist, however he ran off when Nagaina missed her
strike. Now that I have mentioned my theme, I am going to explain my alternative claim. I can see why people think never give up is the lesson or moral because Rikki never gave up fighting the cobras, even though he has never fought before. I know that this theme is wrong due to when Nag raises his hood and is ready to attack, he runs away when Nagaina misses her strike. Also, in the story Nagaina never gave up protecting and caring for her eggs, even when Rikki was threatening to eat them. Another example was when Rikki has the last egg in his mouth, and Nagaina says “I’ll do anything if you don’t eat my last egg.” These are the reasons why I think this is the alternative claim and why I think it could be right in some way but totally wrong in other ways. Mr. Kipling did an excellent job writing this story, and it’s obvious that the lesson is evil is punished and good is rewarded. In reality, this really happens to people. A real life example of evil being punished is when criminals are punished with jail time and fined a lot of money. People who help the homeless are a great example of good. The favorable characters in this story are Rikki, Darzee, Darzee’s wife, Chuchundra, and Teddy’s family. The bad characters in the story are Nag, Nagaina, and Karait. All you have to do is keep in mind that this theme can really happen in real life.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based on an author’s opinion on a subject. The theme of innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a conflict that connects to the theme that innocence should be protected is the death of Tom Robinson.
One example of the theme occurs when the author first introduces the story. “But the summer I was 9 years old, the town I had always loved morphed into a beautifully heartbreaking and complicated place.” (pg. 1). The author is saying that the year she turned nine, she found out something about her town that broke her heart and changed the way she saw it. This quote is important because it supports the theme. It shows that now she is older she has learned something about her town that made her wiser than when she was younger. She is now more informed because the new information changed her and caused her to begin to mature.
Rikki tikki tavi I cannot get that song of the brave Rikki Tikki Tavi the mongoose out of my head. A mongoose is a furry creature from India who kills cobras or other types of snakes and if its eyes get red, the mongoose is mad. Also the mongoose is a curious creature It is strange how similar the book is in the movie. Some of these similarities are the conflicts, the resolution and the rising action.
Theme is the subject of talk, a topic, or morals that the author is trying to get readers to comprehend. When reading an excerpt, the theme is not directly stated in the text, so you must dig deeper into the context to understand the matter trying to be portrayed. In both Angela's Ashes and The Street, we can distinguish a like theme of struggling through life’s complications. After reading the two different stories, we could select the theme from using character, events, and the setting.
Does being the antagonist always mean you are evil? In AELA this year, we read a short story called Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, by Rudyard Kipling. In the story, the main character, a mongoose named Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, is washed out of his home, and taken in by a family of people. In the backyard, there are two snakes, Nag, and his wife Nagaina. Rikki has to fight the snakes in order to ‘save’ himself, and the other creatures in the backyard. That is, however, only Rikki’s side of the story. This essay is about Nagaina, and how she may be more than just an evil antagonist. In the story, Nagaina is not only sly, but also intelligent and caring. Almost everything Nagaina did was for her children, still eggs at the time.
Mongoose are Fascinating creatures that are cute and fuzzy but are also very fierce. Their favorite things to do are kill and fight snakes while looking around at everything. There are two versions of Rikki Tikki Tavi, the book and the movie. They are very close to the same but there are some differences that are noticeable. Both of these stories are fun and exciting, they draw the reader/watcher in and transfix them.
An idea that recurs in or pervades a work of art of literature can be referred to as a “Theme”. Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas and may be implied rather than stated explicitly. Theme is an important part of fictional stories. Several themes are presented in the novel to kill a mocking bird. One of the reoccurring themes in to kill a mockingbird is courage.
The theme in a story is the message or big idea that the author is trying to reveal in his or her narrative. If there was no underlining theme in Sherman Alexie’s short story, “This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” then readers would have no interest in reading the fictional story. Understanding the message that Alexie is trying to display to his readers can vary in many ways and depends on the reader 's understanding of the story. Strong themes that are presented in the fictional tale are man versus self conflict, family, and tribal identity. Victor is a tribal member that has had a rough life and has to deal with his father passing away. Not only does he have to come to terms with his father 's death, but he also has to face his
...rves the way for the plot, the theme is the central idea around which a literary piece revolves. Without the theme the plot would be meaningless and there would be nothing for the readers to derive from the literary piece. Without the plot, the theme would be meaningless as there would be nowhere to consign the message the writer intends to give the reader. It can be said that the plot and theme are the two most important literary elements of a literary piece and are inter-dependant.
Theme is the underlying power beneath a story; the “force” that makes the whole experience worthwhile. Theme is “an idea or message that the writer wishes to convey” (Holt 874). A theme can be either stated or implied. A stated theme is a theme “that the other expresses directly in his work (protic.net); an implied theme is a theme “that is not directly stated in the work” (protic.net). As mentioned before, both of these stories have an implied theme, which now is revealed to mean that the author of the story insinuated it. Themes exist in all stories (verbal or written) and can be long, short, true or false. “Earth people will beat out any other intelligent life-form in any and all competitions” is a theme, but “good always beats evil” is one too. “Once upon a time . . .” stories have themes too, except they are more one-dimensional. For example,...
The story Rikki TIkki Tavi, by Rudyard Kipling, is about good versus evil and our main character Rikki Tikki Tavi’s battle against Nag and Nagaina, two snakes who are terrorizing the garden. The main narrative takes place as Rikki Tikki Tavi as the hero and the snakes are “without a doubt” the villains of the story. However, I disagree, I do not believe that Nag and Nagaina are evil. Rikki Tikki Tavi would kill them regardless because that is mongoose nature, and they were living in the garden long before Rikki TIkki Tavi got there.
Theme plays a very important part in this short story. Theme is the idea of a literary work abstracted from its details of language, character and action. The great example of theme that is evident throughout the entire short story is the duty to perform certain acts. We can see here that the Irishman Donovan is very big on obeying his duty to carry out orders that have been authorized to him.
The story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”, written by Rudyard Kipling, tells the tale about Rikki Tikki’s war-like situation with the beastly cobras. A bungalow in India is protected by one ferocious mongoose. Only Rikki-Tikki’s protectiveness, tenacity and intelligence will allow him to overcome the garden’s most feared creatures.
Rikki also made the garden safe and more carefree. After he got rid of the snakes the garden was a much more peaceful place with not having to worry about the snakes. The humans/ family did not have to worry about being bitten and neither did the animals in the garden. Also the animals did not have to worry about their children being eaten by the snakes. Such as in the quote, “ Naginia used to eat frogs as well as little birds” ( Kipling page 28) So the animals were very happy about the cobras being
For an abundance of authors, the driving force that aids them in creation of a novel is the theme or number of themes implemented throughout the novel. Often times the author doesn’t consciously identify the theme they’re trying to present. Usually a theme is a concept, principle or belief that is significant to an author. Not only does the theme create the backbone of the story, but it also guides the author by controlling the events that happen in a story, what emotions are dispersed, what are the actions of characters, and what emotions are presented within each environment to engage the readers in many
