The purpose of going every day to classes and studying is to increase our knowledge and applies these sciences to benefit the nation. After this long semester, my horizons have expanded via many different information and activities that we practiced in the class. I have written four essays that are completely different from one another. In addition, of the big research that we have been working on at the end of the semester. I lived with my imagination during writing about each of the Chinese learning center, , Flavi's home and Arranging a marriage in India.
The Chinese learning center was the first assignment in my first year at the WKU. It was scaring me how I am going to write about a culture that I know nothing about
it. Surprisingly, I found it was easy because there I learned to take notes over observing things. At the exhibit I found a map that shows how many ethnic groups are there and where they lived. Add to that, the many different types of music instruments that I have never seen in real, but there was one of the smart televisions of there was showing how each instrument works and what type of music is makes. Also, there were the Chinese traditional clothes, food and some folk medicines' tools. So after I had visited this exhibit, I got a general idea about the Chinese culture. The Second essay where we flew with our imagination to Brazil, where Flavio's home was located. This paper was about this little hero Who tried to take care of his brothers in the absence of his parents before blighted by the disease. Flavio He was one of hundreds of children who die in Rio de Janeiro as a result of poverty and malnutrition. From this I felt Guilty to throw what remains of food without thinking of the millions of hunger people around the world who want only a piece of bread to live. Now I never waste the food and what are the ways to help these people from starvation. The last two essays about the marriages' traditions and the veils that one was similar to my culture about arranging the marriage and the Dowry that most cultures do not have it but we still have it as part of religion. The other one about the veil was us the Muslim women tradition, however, I still learned new things about how people from other society do not know much about my culture. So I became curious to know how much others know about it and what are some wrong thoughts about us that I can fix. Now that every time I talk about my culture, I learn something new about this civilization as a result of comparing them with mine. . During this semester I acquired multiple skills in writing. I developed the taking notes methods at the time I wrote the small China in WKU. I also learned how to write a response in each of Flavio's home and Indian marriages. In addition, the veil essay was the one I used what I learned about summarize without forgetting the research paper. The one that we use all the three ways of borrowing author's idea without plagiarism. I also increased my vocabulary by using new words to look more educated. The English 100 class was really benefit to me.
Without delay, I begin my in-depth look into the requirements of this study and what was expected of me, as an English 111 student. To successively complete these assignments, I would need to be focused on the process of such writing assignments. Along with the instructor’s ideas that our writing would be done in such different ways it will eventually consume every waking moment of my time and become top priority for the next four months.
One theme that I found to be very interesting is the struggles that Asian Americans have faced in the past and the present. I never knew about the struggles that have been happening in places like China and Laos. I never realized how many families come from poverty and violence. I have only learned very little about historical events such as Vietnam. I am only now becoming more aware about the human rights problem in China. I am so used to seeing places like Tokyo, Japan in movies and television. Everything seems so clean and the city is lit up with bright lights and amazing buildings at night. Before this course, I thought that most Asians live this kind of life. I never knew that these events had even occurred and I was amazed at some of the things Asians have had to go through over the years.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
Multiple essays have been formulated during the duration of Composition 1. These essays have taught me an important lesson about my writing, failure is acceptable in order to grow. On the other hand, I made an important discovery last year that I want to study journalism and advance further in that field after college. From taking journalism classes, to blogging in my spare time, to always getting an A on my papers, I thought I had no room to improve. I was mistaken. Therefore, because of the rigorous essay work each essay brought, I learned more about how to write different pieces and grow from my “failure”.
form the piece. In this essay I am going to focus on the importance of
Academic writhing is one of the basic skill of language which is mandatory to succeed in college. The techniques and the arts of writing are complex to master within a short period of time. Successful writhing demand critical thinking , panning ,revising, and proof reading. Initially, I used to run out of idea to start any essay. Through consistent practice I have improved my writing. Some of the strengths I have developed through times are my ability to critically think about the topic, and be able to generate different school of thought regarding the topic. Furthermore, I have a better vocabulary and grammar knowledge.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
Before this class, I understood purpose was important; however, during this class I have discovered that putting more focus on purpose can result in a more interesting thesis and paper. I have learned to think about purpose before writing my essay, once I have narrowed my topic I ask myself why would anyone want to read my essay. Consideri...
In the article Arranging a Marriage in India, Serena Nanda, a professor of Anthropology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, writes about what she learned about arranged marriages in India from interviewing informants and participating in arranging a marriage herself. Nanda brought in some American biases about how marriage and love are “supposed” to work. She initially had trouble accepting why someone would want or let another arrange their marriage instead of seeking a partner themselves. Nanda’s difficulty understanding arranged marriages, is a result of having grown up in a culture that leaves such decisions to the individual. Furthermore, if the quotes given in the article are an indication, Nanda let her biases influence her conduct
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I also learned that pre-writing...
Although, I was able to grow and improve as a writer this semester, I feel that there is still a lot for me to learn and room for me to continue growing using these techniques I’ve learned from this class. These academic techniques will help me in the future in my education, career and in life to be successfully educated wherever life takes me.
This past week I have learned a lot in Professor Tartaglia’s class. We have learned about textual and contextual analysis, beginning steps to learning how to be a better writer, Observation techniques, and critical interpretation. Which before I didn’t know much about any of these topics. In school, I never had a writing class. Of Couse, we would have to write papers for maybe your English class, but you never really had to have it in MLA format. A lot of things are very different for me here than they were at home. I like that fact that we don’t get homework every day and we have a while before our papers or journals are due. It gives me time to think and plan everything out and the finally start to write the paper and due my work. The only
Over the semester, I have learned numerous things about myself as a reader and a writer. When I first began class, I did not know anything about writing an essay. I could not spell well nor tell you what a thesis was. As the semester went on, my communication skill has improved, my vocabulary has expanded, and my writing has improved greatly.
The first skill that I want to talk about is writing skills. Writing is very important for students because most of the class need student to write essay. In this class, Ms. Lamoreaux use a whole semester to teach us how to write a good essay. I learned many skills about how to make my essay better such as how to add examples and supporting details in my essay. I remember in the beginning of the class, my essay cannot get high grade. I felt morose then I found Ms. Lamoreaux and asked why. Ms. Lamoreaux taught me that my essay need more example and supporting details. Example and supporting details can make my essay more interesting and supporting my opinion. I improved by learning those writing skills. All through the course of this semester I have taken in a great deal being in English 102. I have improved as an essayist, at any rate in my eyes. The diverse composition assignments were useful to me utilizing exploration utilizing research and making inquiries when I was trapped. My movement has included me composing papers, talking about colleague’s papers, and so on. Going into this English class, I had yet a great deal to research composing, and utilizing rules for homework assignments. It took me a while to handle the idea of it, yet when I did it turned into a valuable instrument.
