Living in a world motivated by greed and pride, kindness is the last shred of humanity that maybe surviving today. Many people believe that society can only run when money and selfishness are involved, but compassion and selflessness have shown their faces in many situations. In a world motivated by greed and selfishness, kindness still leads many people throughout their day to day lives and actions. In the essay, "Fish Cheeks" by Amy Tan and in the movie Crash, directed by Paul Haggins, characters show us how acts of kindness are still around in this egotistical world. Tan writes about the experience she had when she was 13; her crush was the pastor's son and she wanted so badly for him to like her. Tan did everything she could to impress the boy, yet she was ashamed of her family. When it came to dinner, her relatives embarrassed her even more and her father poked his chopsticks into the fish head on the table and popped the cheek out then offered the tender meat to Tan. "Amy, your favorite, he said, offering me the tender fish cheek. I just wanted to disappear" (Tan, 5) Tan's father was being kind, even though she was mortified because of him. At the end of the night Tan's mother gave her a miniskirt that she had wanted so badly so that Tan could be just like the other American girls at school. Her mother acted with kindness by buying a piece of clothing that Amy wanted so she could fit in even though her mother wanted her to be unique. Years later Tan looked back at the events of that night and realized that she was wrong, and she acted selfishly. She appreciated the lessons she learned that night and the true intentions of her …show more content…
The film is about the racial and social tensions that live and breathe in Los Angeles, California. Hardworking family man, Daniel is introduced after Jean and Rick Cabot are carjacked. Daniel is a locksmith and he is asked to change the locks in the Cabot home and as he is finishing his work he overhears Jean asking her husband to get yet another locksmith to change to locks because she is afraid Daniel will give the new keys to "his gang banger friends" (Haggins).Daniel leaves and hands Jean the keys as he heads out the door. All Daniel wants to do is make a better life for his young daughter and wife. Anthony on the other hand is carjacker, looking out for himself and only caring about finding another victim to steal from to feed his drug addiction. Anthony states many times that he does not want to be stereotyped and yet he does nothing to get out of that kind of life. At one point in the film, Anthony and his partner Peter hit a man with a car they stole. At the end of the film, he returns to the abandoned car and realizes that there are illegal immigrants hiding in the back of the van. Instead of selling the unfortunate people, he freed them, acted upon the small bit of kindness left inside
The film starts with an uprising after a white storeowner kills a black teenager. This incident Highlights Prejudices. The teenager was labeled a thief because of the color of his skin and the unjustifiable murder causes racial tensions that exist as a result of the integration of the high schools.
Amy Tan, in ?Mother Tongue,? Does an excellent job at fully explaining her self through many different ways. It?s not hard to see the compassion and love she has for her mother and for her work. I do feel that her mother could have improved the situation of parents and children switching rolls, but she did the best she could, especially given the circumstances she was under. All in all, Amy just really wanted to be respected by her critics and given the chance to prove who she is. Her time came, and she successfully accomplished her goals. The only person who really means something to her is her mother, and her mother?s reaction to her first finished work will always stay with her, ?so easy to read? (39).
John Singleton’s view of social problems in South Central Los Angeles happens in a tale of three friends growing up together. Doughboy and Ricky Baker are half-brothers and have opposite personalities. Ricky is a football player who hopes to win a scholarship and spends most of his time playing football. On the other hand, Doughboy is a young man who looks upon his environment for guidance. He is involved in violence, abusing drugs, and participates in violence. In between is their friend Tre, who actually has a father to teach him what is right from wrong. Furious Styles, who is Tre’s father in the film does everything in his strength to keep his son from becoming another startling statistic. As you can see, it is always important for parents to be a part of their child’s life because it can make a big difference not only in their life but also their child’s future.
First, the story ¨Fish Cheeks¨ shows a story of how a girl named Amy “finds herself” through a holiday dinner. Amy has a crush on Robert, a 14 year old
The film chronicles the histories of three fathers, and manages to relates and link their events and situations. First is Mitchell Stephens and his relationship with his drug-addict daughter. Second is Sam, and the secret affair he is having with his young daughter Nicole. He is somewhat of a narcissistic character because of his preoccupation with himself and pleasing himself, and his lack of empathy throughout the film for the others in the town. Third is Billy, who loves his two children so much that he follows behind the school bus every day waving at them. Billy is also having an affair with a married woman who owns the town’s only motel. On the exterior the town is an average place with good people just living their lives. But, beneath all the small town simplicity is a web of lies and secrets, some which must be dealt with in the face of this tragedy.
The film stays in line with classic noir in many ways. The usage of dark sets and high contrast lighting, which creates heavy shadows on the actors faces, makes the movie feel like it all happens at night and in dark alley ways. The story focuses on the inhumane parts of human nature. Each of the main characters experiences some kind of tragedy. For Vargas his tragedy was in dealing with Quinlin who has set out to frame him and his wife. For Quinlin his entire life represented a man consumed with darkness who lives his life with a “Touch of Evil.” Menzies was a hopeful man who looked up to Quinlin but was let down. For the viewer, film noir represents truth, even if it is not a truth that all people would like to hear.
In the story, "Fish Cheeks" it talks about how Amy Tan's Chinese family invites an American boy's family over for dinner. This movie takes place in Los Angeles and is about racial conflicts within a group of people which occur in a series of events. Since there are a wide variety of characters in this movie, it can be confusing to the viewer. In the plot, Graham is an African-American detective whose younger brother is a criminal. One of the biggest issues depicted in the film is the struggle of minority groups and their experience concerning racial prejudice and stereotyping in America. Examples of racism and prejudice are present from the very beginning of the movie when Officer Ryan pulls over black couple, Cameron and Christine for no apparent reason other than the color of their skin. Officer Ryan forces the couple to get out of the car
The film is about a Serial KIller named Lonnie Franklin, Lonnie was a deviant person he stole cars, broke into houses, took women off of the street and wouldn’t let them go. He made them do some very harsh and horrible things. Crime and Justice is shown throughout the film for example Lonnie having his friends “work” for him but in reality he has them cleaning up and covering up what he’s done with the women he’s taken and/or murdered. Lonnie had one guy thinking he was doing insurance and he told him to burn a car.
One of the more prevalent themes of this movie is racism, and how prejudicial mindsets ultimately lead to one’s own demise. The movie outlines how racism, among other things, can adversely affect someone’s judgment. After the father died, we see how the family gradually deteriorates financially as well as emotionally after Derek (the older brother played by Edward Norton) turns to a neo Nazi gang for an outlet, which eventually influences his younger brother Danny (played by Edward Furlong) to follow down ...
It is about a group of students of color who suffer through poverty, gang activities, violence, racial discrimination, and sexism. The movie takes place in Los Angles which is known as a city with a lot of diversity. The movie displays a lot of community conflict based on the fact that a lot of people have different points of view, or either want others to agree with their point of view. A community’s purpose is to bring people together as one, rather than tear each other apart physically or emotionally.
The car accidents are symbolism of the reactions and fatalities of viewing other cultures, races, religion or gender in a certain light without actually looking at the individual for who they are and their contribution to society. The most pervasive theme of prejudice depicted in the movie is racism and how individual interpret certain behaviors, gestures, and meaning of words based on appearances. To emphasize, the movie examines the reaction of the DA’s wife to two black men walking toward them as motive to fear. She immediately gets closer to her husband and grabs her purse.
