Similarities - turned evil (contributes) because of their surroundings Growing up Loss Difference - what really made Anakin evil was his fear of loss but what really made Elphaba evil was that she had already lost everything Padme Fiyero, sister, etc. Fear vs grief Antagonists in literature and entertainment are immediately branded as being evil from birth. However, these villains have suffered and lost to become what they are in the stories you read. This pertains to the antagonists in both Wicked, by Gregory Maguire, and Star Wars, Episodes 1, 2, and 3. In Wicked, Elphaba is born into a reckless family, never receiving parental love and losing anyone she has cared for. She is later overcome by her experiences and becomes the infamous …show more content…
Wicked Witch of the West. Anakin, from Star Wars, spent his early childhood enslaved and had to face the loss of his mother and the looming threat of his wife’s death. Once thought to be a hero, he later becomes Darth Vader. In both stories, the main character’s unfortunate circumstances contributed to the development of an evil nature, through each character finally switched for different reasons. Both Elphaba and Anakin faced challenges in life that contributed to their turn to wickedness.
In Wicked, Elphaba’s is generally forgotten by her mother and is constantly belittled by her father. “You were born to curse my life,” accuses her father on page 339. Later on page 382 it is stated that, “Daily his habits of loathing and self-loathing cripple her.” Elphaba never received much of a childhood and grew up without anyone to look up to or over her. Elphaba was forced to mature quickly and lacked a free, fun-spirited attitude later in life. While Anakin did receive some love as a child, his childhood still had a fair share of trauma. Anakin and his mother spent his early years forcibly working. He then had to make a difficult choice which involved leaving his mother. “I will come back and free you, Mom. I promise.” Unfortunately, when Anakin returned, he was met with devastating news, “Your mother is dead, son. Accept it.” Growing up in poor conditions and losing his loving mother made Anakin more susceptible to evil. Both Elphaba and Anakin’s childhood situation and events are factors that caused the two to become …show more content…
evil. Both Elphaba and Anakin similarly suffered a rough childhood, though different emotions caused each character to “snap.” For Elphaba, it was emptiness and a loss of hope that caused Elphaba begin her real descent into darkness.
The only person Elphaba had ever said the words “I love you” to, was murdered by the government. Additionally, her sister was murdered a few years later. Elphaba lost hope quicker and quicker. She had lost hope in a world that let her love be murdered. Then the loss of some of the only two people she had cared about filled Elphaba with an emptiness that gave was to a madness. The emotion that quickened Anakin’s turn to darkness was anger and fear. Anakin's wife, Padme, was having recurring dreams of her death. Anakin, paranoid and unable to live with this possibility, confided in a evil, powerful man. “Please...just help me save Padme’s life. I can’t live without her,” pleads Anakin. Anakin, angered that this would happen to his wife and fearful of losing her, was willing to do anything to save her. So, he became overtaken by his fear and turned dark. Different emotions eventually caused Elphaba and Anakin to become their evilest
self. In Wicked and Star Wars, the antagonists struggles’ are shown, such as their loss and the circumstances they face. Events cause different antagonists to be overcome by different emotions like hopelessness or fear. No matter what such a character may feel, it will contribute to them becoming the merciless characters seen in literature. After all, evil is shaped form a person’s surroundings. No one is born evil.
“Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye, Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!” There are two important leaders on is Odysseus from Homer’s The Odyssey and Luke Skywalker from Star Wars IV. Odysseus and Luke are both wise, but Odysseus is more arrogant. He being arrogant makes him less of a better leader, more of a stubborn person, and more narcissistic.
Evil can be a scary thing many things can influence on why a person may be considered evil or do evil things.People do things because they were influenced by others or by their own selfish desires,
Shakespeare is at it again, this time stealing from the only source more read than him; the Bible. Macbeth and Genesis 3 are both alike by greed, temptation, and forbidden fruit. We all know stealing is a crime. In both novels, the protagonist’s both committed sins pushed by their partners. The parallels are visible in the resemblances of the characters and justified by Shakespeare possessive, creation or characters, conflict, and theme.
In literature, "evil often triumphs but never conquers." By definition, a triumph is only short- term. For example, something short- term would be an achieved title, a victor in a battle, or a winner in a game. These three things are only temporary, as triumphs usually are in novels. By definition, when something is conquered, it remains conquered perpetually. Usually the evil force is unable to conquer, because of the opposite side's mentality. Because of these definitions, this statement is showing that even though evil characters or actions prevail in battles or events, the feat would not last forever, especially in the hearts and minds of the opposite side. I agree with this statement because there is proof that this is true in novels that I have read. Many novels have this common theme: good versus evil. This theme is unquestionably shown in two works, Macbeth and To Kill A Mockingbird.
According to Kelly, “Elphaba is infected (or at very least intimately connected) with death from birth...Several characters close to her are killed because of their association with her demonstrating her carrier status by infecting others with death.” This implication that Elphaba is truly a curse as her Father somewhat jokingly called her, implies that she brings about the death of others simply by being around them. If this was the case, then there would likely be no exceptions, yet not every important person in her life dies-and multiple deaths are out of her scope of influence. Even if she had never been born-certain deaths may likely still have occured. If she is guilty, then the Wizard would have to share the guilt as his coming into power establishes the society that leads to the society that makes all these deaths possible. Just as certain deaths were fated to occur with or without her, so to is her own fate sealed in accordance with the original. Despite her established death and title, the novel creates a strong young woman with powerful views and goals. Other than removing the Wizard from power, Elphaba also has the desire to obtain animal rights. However, just as her own character becomes twisted and unrecognizable by the end, so to is this goal as she ends
In Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West happen before the novel by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In Baum’s novel of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, portrays the role of the Wicked Witch of the West being wicked. We have no background or personal preference to understand her life of the Wicked Witch of the West (as known as Elphaba). But in Maguire’s novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, shows how Elphaba traits of a monster are similar to a typical monster that portrays in people's eye. Elphaba is an ideal model of what we see in a monster would be like: abnormal, scary looking, and blunt behavior. She is a target of gossip to those who do not even know her. Typically in monster tale, usually, monsters characterize as: wicked, unstoppable, destructive, and evil. Surprisingly since birth to young adulthood, Elphaba did not portray a role of any wickedness of a monster expected to be, but a caring person and cares about what she thinks is righteous.
The constant theme throughout this movie is the battle between good and evil, right and wrong, and light and dark. Anakin Skywalker is the main protagonist throughout this film. There is an internal fight going on within him concerning what side of the force he should follow. The light side means he would have to allow Padme, his wife, to die. The dark side would allow him to save her or at least have the fear of losing her. He slowly starts to turn to the dark side with guidance from Darth Sidious (Chancellor Palpatine). Anakin believes he is doing the right thing which in turn will save Padme from dying in childbirth.
Imagine yourself in a pre-industrial world full of mystery and magic. Imagine a world full of monsters, demons, and danger, as well as a world full of friends, fairies, good wizards, and adventure. In doing so you have just taken your first step onto a vast world created by author and scholar John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. Tolkien became fascinated by language at an early age during his schooling, in particularly, the languages of Northern Europe, both ancient and modern. This affinity for language did not only lead to his profession, but also his private hobby, the invention of languages. His broad knowledge eventually led to the development of his opinions about Myth and the importance of stories. All these various perspectives: language, the heroic tradition, and Myth, as well as deeply-held beliefs in Catholic Christianity work together in all of his works. The main elements of Tolkien’s works are Good versus Evil, characters of Christian and anti-Christian origin, and the power of imagination.
Wicked, dishonorable, corrupt, villainous, malicious, and vicious all have one thing in common: they define evil. A person or a group of people that display these qualities are often defined as evil beings or creatures. Two people that have many of these characteristics developed within them are Iago from Shakespeare’s Othello and Lucifer from the Bible. Both Iago and Lucifer are developed with many “evil” qualities woven intricately into their character development. The representation of each “evil” characteristic gives them something they have in common, allowing the description and portrayal of both Iago and Lucifer in literature show the audience they share common “evil” characteristics and that they lead to chaos and downfall.
and the sound of the chain, still around his wrist… he wanted to see his family again...he did not want to die”(236-237). Throughout his quote, it not only shows, but explains the evil when people like Tommy are put through traumatic events. When the sheriff gave Bobby Joe the gun, he had evil intentions. The sheriff wanted Bobby Joe to traumatize Tommy to the point where he would not follow through with any demonstrations to help out the blacks. Furthermore, the Sheriff wanted to make sure Tommy did not participate in any protests to stand up for his people's rights. All in all, both novels Night and The Glory Field, display evil by putting putting people through traumatizing events that no one should ever have to experience.
According to the theory of Jung, when one’s shadow is repressed long enough it will take over the ego-conciousness. This happens to Anakin when he goes back home to save his mother from the Tusken Raiders, thereby disobeying the Order. When he discovers that his mother has been killed by the Tuskens, he becomes enraged and kills all of the members of the tribe, even the children. After that he flies back to the planet of the republic and the Jedi Order, Coruscant, and speaks with Padmé. During his conversation Anakin once again projects his own shadow onto Obi-Wan; he believes he is an all-powerful Jedi and Obi-Wan is just jealous of him and is trying to hold him back. But after raging at Obi-Wan, Anakin confesses to Padmé that he killed all of the Tuskens and tells her he should be better than
It is clear from the beginning of Star Wars that Dark Side is very powerful, possibly more so than the light side. This is evidenced by the fact the Emperor and Darth Vader
As he returns to Wuthering Heights, he is engulfed with this passion to revenge himself on all those who have abused him as a child. He ruins Hindley by encouraging his excessive drinking and gambling. His revenge is also directed towards Edgar Linton, whom he sees as having stolen Catherine from him. His sullen, vengeful, cruel and impatient characteristics still exist, which have been present since childhood, but have grown deeper. He is, in reality, a man torn between love and hate. Since his depths of his passions, he hates as deeply as he loves.
At the first movie, The Phantom Menace, Anakin Skywalker is a nine-year-old slave, living on the planet called Tatooine with his mother Shmi. According to the story, he has no father and never had one. He have certain skills, able to see things before they happen, skillful engineer and pilot considering his age. After he meets Qui-Gon, a jedi master, his life have changed. He separates from his mother and leaves with Qui-Gon in order to be trained as a jedi. Other important figures in his life are Padme and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Padme is
Good and evil were going to war, fighting with all their might inside a person’s heart and soul. They had fought many battles before, and this was no exception. The war would be named later, with all the human’s friends repeating the story, figuring out what possessed them to do such a thing.
