Comparing Diana Baumrind's Maccoby And Martin

The parenting styles explained in this essay are based on the works of Diana Baumrind (Baumrind, 1966), and Maccoby and Martin (1983). Diana Maumrind was a developmental psychologist who noticed that preschoolers exhibited three different types of behavior. Each type of behavior was highly correlated to a specific kind of parenting. Based on extensive observation, interviews, and analyses, Baumrind (Baumrind, 1967) identified three initial parenting styles: authoritative parenting, authoritarian parenting, and permissive parenting. Later on, Maccoby and Martin (1983) expanded this parenting style model using a two-dimensional framework. They made a further distinction by expanding Baumrind's permissive parenting into two different types: indulgent (permissive) parenting and neglectful (uninvolved) parenting. Authoritative parents are easy to recognize as they have high expectations of their children. These parents temper these expectations with understanding, love, and support for their children as well. This type of parenting creates the healthiest environment for a growing child and helps to foster a productive relationship between parent and child. Common characteristics of these parents include:
¢ Use structure for daily activities such as a planned bedtime
¢ Have household rules which they explain.
¢ Establish consequences for disrupting this structure or breaking the household rules.
¢ Have reasonable expectations for their children.
¢ Have a healthy and open line of communication with their child.
¢ Can talk to their child about anything without fear of negative consequence or harsh
