Clashing Cultures in Things Fall Apart and Heart of Darkness
A culture defines what it's people perceive about evil, the place it gives to women, and its relationship with other cultures. The Ibo and European people in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, have two distinct cultures that begin to blend when the white men come as missionaries and try to communicate and live together with the Africans. European culture also differs from native culture on the Congo rivers in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Only one man, Kurtz, really connects with the natives and then is taken away dying by his fellow Europeans.
Evil is defined by it's culture, whether it be how the culture accepts another culture and condemns as evil or identifying specific items as evil. In Things Fall Apart, the Ibo culture veiled the Africans as primitive natives who held their own different, seen as evil, ways and traditions. In Heart of Darkness, Marlow viewed the natives with whom Kurtz is staying with as evil and feels their evil when he met them after traveling down the river. Once he heard that Kurtz ordered the natives to attack his ship, his views changed a little. Marlow experienced the evil that Kurtz did, and the even had the sickness that Kurtz died from. In both of these novels, specific places represent evil things in different cultures. Europeans treat a church as holy ground but to the Ibo culture who didn't know Jesus, it was just a building raised by the white invaders who settled among them. Europeans found the Congo River and a town on it's banks and it was thought of as evil because they hadn't experienced living there or vines covering them as they traveled along the river added to their thinking of an evil atmosphere. In Things Fall Apart, the clan refers to a forest as an evil forest and they cast everything they deem into it. For example, twins were thought of as a curse when born so they were cast into the forest and left to die. The evil forest didn't seem so evil to the European missionaries who came because they hadn't adopted this particular belief of evil into their culture. In fact, the clan purposely granted land in the evil forest to missionaries for their church, believing evil would destroy them, but the missionaries did last until the church was burnt down by members of the clan.
Many societies have beliefs rooted deep in ancient religion. Some beliefs include polygamy, polytheism, and patriarchy, or rule by men. One such culture is that of Achebe's Things Fall Apart. Polytheism and polygamy are custom in the clan, and the role of each family member is very defined. The men are overly domineering. The women and children are treated poorly and often beaten. Life in Achebe's Umuofia would seem very different to someone living in modern day America.
Comparing Murderers in Lamb to the Slaughter and the Speckled Band In this essay, I am going to compare and contrast the two murderers, Sir Grimesby Roylott in 'The Speckled Band' with Mary Maloney from 'The Lamb To The Slaughter'. The two stories 'The Speckled Band' and 'Lamb To The Slaughter' are both about murder. The situations and motives that occur show sharp contrasts between each of the separate murders. The character of Roylott presented in 'The Speckled Band' is a violent character with a unique quality with wit and skills that shine throughout this short story. It is not however, for the best reason.
Throughout the years, humans have shaped the world and many societies have developed different cultural patterns. By studying different cultures, we learn how to collaborate with different societies and we learn how to survive and adapt to environmental changes. Culture is the way of life of a society and is composed of shared values and beliefs. Every culture has different cultural elements that are vital to one’s survival in a certain place.

There are two kinds of evil, moral and natural. Moral evil is things like murder, rape, stealing, terrorism, etc. Natural evil is things like suffering and unpleasantness typically as a result of moral evil. Evil is that which has no power of its own. Evil is darkness, a negation of light. Its power is in us, in our fear of it, in that we consider it a "something" worth responding to.
The play begins in a 'desolate place' as the stage directions tell us. Shakespeare uses the pathetic fallacy of 'Thunder and Lightening.' This creates an atmosphere of dark and evil and anticipates something frightening. There are three witches, casting a spell, as Shakespeare shows through the use of rhyming couplets at the end of lines. In addition to this, he uses the syntatic parralelism to suggest that everything is not what it will seem. 'Fair is foul and foul is fair.' This warns the audience so that they can make predictions of what will happen in 'Macbeth.'
Culture makes us who we are. Each individual has their own culture from their experiences in life and is developed from societal influences. The various cultures around the world influence us in different ways which we experience at least once in our lifetime. There are occasions, especially in history, where cultures clash with one another. For instance, the English colonization in Africa changed their culture. Chinua Achebe, the author of Things Fall Apart, portrayed this change in the Igbo people’s society, especially through the character Okonkwo in the village of Umuofia; the introduction of Western ideas challenged him. In the novel Things Fall Apart, the author Chinua Achebe introduces to us Okonkwo whose character’s response to the
Writers often use supernatural to add suspense and interest to their work. The Witches and ghosts create a sense of horror as well as foreshadow what will happen next. Ghosts and apparitions really took over MacBeth’s emotions and fears. For example in the opening scene witches are used to create an atmosphere of horror and suspense. Later in the scene the ghost of Banquo appears at the dinner table and drives Macbeth mad. His wife try's to calm him but she can't and Macbeth has the people at the table getting awfully suspicious. Again we see it when Macbeth saw the dagger, he is seeing things due to guilt. The witches foresaw what happened through the play by telling Macbeth his future as well as Banquo. Ghosts made the audience feel scared the sky black and the wind misty.
Supernatural is often defined in as something paranormal or unable to be explained by science or laws of nature. This abnormality or paranormal behavior occurs throughout numerous scenes of Shakespeare 's The Tragedy of Macbeth. The play is set in mid 11th century Scotland, and there was a stark contrast between the way of life back then and today. The Scottish general and Thane of Glamis, Macbeth, is a powerful man, but not a virtuous man. Banquo, who is another general and co-leader of the Scottish army along Macbeth, finds out that his children will be the future king. He is easily persuaded by his devious wife Lady Macbeth of achieving a higher rank in the kingdom of Scotland and they will go on extreme lengths to make sure it happens.
Shakespeare's Portrayal of the Supernatural in Macbeth The supernatural plays a considerable part in Shakespeare's "Macbeth". "Macbeth" is one o the well admired historical tragedies by William Shakespeare.
Culture is defined in many ways. It is the belief, customs, arts, and way of life for a particular society, group, place, or time (Culture, n.d.). Along with defining culture there are characteristics that come along with each and every culture you come across. There are five basic characteristics that all cultures share and differentiate from and they are learning, shared, symbols, integrated, and dynamic. “What sets worlds in motion is the interplay of differences, their attractions and repulsions. Life is plurality, death is uniformity. By suppressing differences and peculiarities, by eliminating different civilization and cultures, progress weakens life and favors death. The ideal of a single civilization for everyone, implicit in
The other apparition that highlights Macbeth's weakness is the ghost of Banquo. While Macbeth is at his dinner, he sees the ghost of Banquo sitting in his seat at the dinner table. When told by Ross to sit down, Macbeth says, "The tables are full." (3.4.41) Macbeth is seeing Banquo's ghost at the table because he truly feels guilty of having Banquo killed.
When it comes to culture, I believe it is the characteristics of a person, or a group that makes them unique. Everyone is somehow different and not everyone has the same beliefs. “Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.” (Kim Ann Zimmermann, Live Science 2017)
To start with at this time the Vietminh had the support of the USA, as
Every culture has several similarities and differences that impact the way they do things. Several of these cultures have distinct traits and traditions that make them differently from other cultures. I believe these differences make each culture different and unique. The two cultures that I have chosen to compare and contrast with each other is Kenya and India. In this paper I will discuss the similarities and differences in each of the culture’s families in context, marital relationships, and families and aging. These are important aspects of these cultures and to examine them will give me a better knowledge of both of these cultures.
