Comparing Courage In Crucible, Young Goodman Brown, And Life Of Pi

“There is a certain enthusiasm in liberty, that makes human nature rise above itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.” (Alexander Hamilton) human nature means many different things, one example is the courage that we have. The books The Crucible, Young Goodman Brown, and Life of Pi all show different aspects of courage in their stories.
When we have courage or set our hearts to things we want to accomplish, we will succeed in the endeavor. In Life of Pi there is amazing almost unrealistic courage shown in many different ways. Pisicine Patel started out as a normal young boy who lives in India, mid-1970s. He goes to school, he’s bullied, and works just as the rest of us. His family owns a zoo which holds a wide variety of animals. They recently

got two new tigers in the zoo, an adult female and a young male. The young male is named Richard Parker, after his capturer. Richard Parker ended up stranded in a lifeboat with Pisicine, a Zebra, a Hyena, and an Orangutan. Within the first few days the Zebra, Hyena, and Orangutan had been killed, leaving Pi alone with Richard.
The courage in this book is astounding, taking the fact that Pi was left on a boat with Richard Parker for over 200 days. He was able to not only survive himself, but he also kept Richard Parker alive throughout the time.
“I must say a word about fear. It is life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it finds with unnerving ease. It begins in your mind, always ... so you must fight hard to express it. You must fight hard to shine the light of words upon it. Because if you don't, if your fear becomes a wordless darkness that you avoid, perhaps even manage to forget, you open yourself to further attacks of fear because you never truly fought the opponent who defeated you.” (Yann Martel, Life of Pi) even though Pi is extremely scared, he is able to pull through and live. Would you let fear take hold of you and suffocate you until you die?
