Hilda Samuels and Hally’s mother can be compared and contrasted in Athol Fugard’s ‘Master Harold’… and the boys. They can be compared based on their relationship with the overbearing men in their lives as well as their absence in the play as a whole. They are both females; however, they are from different cultural backgrounds. There is a distinct difference between the race as well as the class of both females. The relationship between Hally’s father and mother as well as Willie and Hilda emphasises how dynamic the relationship between a domineering male and a subservient female can be. The two relationships reveal how similar the situations are even though the females are from completely different cultures.
Hally states that when his mother is not around, his father makes him empty his chamberpot. This gives the audience the impression that Hally’s mother is the caregiver. The audience can therefore conclude that when the father is home, the mother takes care of his every need. Hally's father seems to be a demanding character as well as a huge responsibility for Hally’s mother. Yet, she supports him nevertheless. She is a strong woman who plays the dual role of enabler and caregiver as she runs the tearoom and looks after her husband simultaneously.
Hally’s mother is the bread winner. We know this as she is the owner of the tea shop. She acts as the peacekeeper at home. This becomes evident through her conversation with Hally over the telephone. She has to juggle between two domineering characters that have equally strong personalities. She is reliant on Hally for help with his father. They play similar roles in their domestic lives however their positions differ in the broader social society. Both females are not physically present in the play; they are portrayed through other characters that have their own issues. This brings a bias element into the play as the women cannot represent themselves. The men in the play are the ones that ultimately bring the women to life in the play. The men consequently portray double characterisation. Both of the women are ruled by men, however, they respond differently. Hilda is represented through Willie and Sam. Hally’s mother is represented to the audience through the telephone conversation that she has with Hally. For both women, we cannot merely assume that the descriptions of them are accurate.

Within this family is a rather troublesome and frankly a bit clichéd mother (being the husband’s in this case) whose sole issue appears to be being herself. Readers are made to see her as complaining and overall very unpleasant to the rest of the family, especially the two young parents. It is absolutely clear that Bailey very much dislikes his mother, taking a dismissive stance to her, “Bailey didn 't look up from his reading so she wheeled around then and faced the children 's mother” and certainly not entertaining to her pleasure, “She asked Bailey if he would like to dance but he only glared at her.” However, soon readers start to see another side of this story, one which explains the situation more than what is initially offered by O’Conner. The differences in personal beliefs and ideologies between Bailey and his mother cause a major rift. It’s implied that perhaps she was not a very good parental figure to him leading up to the end as realizations dawned upon her far too late. Some of this may be attributed to the lifestyle and morals an older woman would have been raised in, but it is also strongly hinted at that she may have certain incorrigible flaws. According to Elizabethan society, the center of Olivia’s dilemma with her marriage was ensuring her wealth, not marrying a man she loved (Joseph 170). Social class increases division among individuals in society. This play “ is not the story of a Juliet's or an Orlando's love .., but of the very realistic struggles and intrigues over the betrothal of a rich Countess, whose selection of a mate determines the future” (170). Readers looking past these boundaries created by class and gender, can find striking similarities in emotions characters have for each other. Through the actions of the male hegemony and the mother figure, both plays show the different perspectives both sexes have towards homosexuality. Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing is, on the surface, a typical romantic comedy with a love-plot that ends in reconciliation and marriage. This surface level conformity to the conventions of the genre, however, conceals a deeper difference that sets Much Ado apart. Unlike Shakespeare’s other romantic comedies, Much Ado about Nothing does not mask class divisions by incorporating them into an idealized community. Instead of concealing or obscuring the problem of social status, the play brings it up explicitly through a minor but important character, Margaret, Hero’s “waiting gentlewoman.” Shakespeare suggests that Margaret is an embodiment of the realistic nature of social class. Despite her ambition, she is unable to move up in hierarchy due to her identity as a maid. Her status, foiling Hero’s rich, protected upbringing, reveals that characters in the play, as well as global citizens, are ultimately oppressed by social relations and social norms despite any ambition to get out.

The portrayal of gender roles in William Shakespeare’s play Othello, demonstrates the inferior treatment of women and the certain stereotypes of men placed on them by society. Both the male and female characters in the play have these certain gender expectations placed on them. In a society dominated by men, it is understood that the women are to be seen rather than heard. The women are referred to and treated much like property. If indeed they do speak up, they are quickly silenced. One woman’s attempt to be the perfect wife is what ultimately led to her demise. The expectations of men are equally stereotypical. Men are to be leaders and to be in control and dominant especially over the women. The male characters compete for position and use the female characters in the play as leverage to manipulate each other. Shakespeare provides insight in understanding the outcomes of the men and women who are faced with the pressures of trying to live up to society’s expectations, not only in the workplace, but also in the home. The pressure creates jealousy issues amongst the men and they become blind to the voice of reason and are overtaken by jealous rage, leads to the death of many of the characters.
