Carl Jung once said, “the meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed,” giving new meaning to the proverb “opposites attract.” However seemingly disparate two individuals are, when the two right people come together, a remarkable reaction can occur. Our very differences introduce us to new ways of thinking and new experiences that can help, restore and make one another a better person. At the same time, the similarities that do exist, however few, can provide the anchor or foundation on which a couple can grow together. My partner and I couldn’t be any more different in our upbringings and personalities, yet, these differences have helped us transform into better people, anchored by the similarities in our character traits and core values. My partner and I grew up in two different worlds. My partner was born to a Japanese mother and Swedish father. As such, she was immersed from birth in a culturally rich and diverse environment. As a child, she spent her summers in Japan and even lived in Sweden for a year where she attended an international school. Her mother encouraged her to explore her interests which led her to extracurricular activities including ballet, art, piano, and the violin. She was further pushed …show more content…
My partner and I have endured many trials and tribulations over the years but what has kept us together and has made us stronger is the solid foundation upon which our values are built upon and the unique perspectives we bring to one another that has reaffirmed my love and commitment to my partner. The polarity that exists in our personalities are what brings excitement and surprise to the relationship and allows us to guide one another as we evolve and

In The Big Field, author Mike Lupica explores the theme, "Success uses motivation as fuel." Lupica portrays this theme through the main character, Hutch. Throughout the entire book, Hutch, a young boy that has just recently joined a highly talented baseball team, displays moments that exemplify this main theme. Hutch and his team have a chance to play in the stadium of the Miami Marlins, a Major League Baseball team, as long as they can keep winning games and advancing through a challenging tournament; however, Hutch's favorite position on the field, shortstop, the position located between 2nd and 3rd base, has already been filled on the team. Unfortunately, Hutch gets a demotion from shortstop, to second base, the position located between 1st base and 2nd base. Although Hutch was disappointed and melancholy about the switch in position, he was even more upset about the downgrading of leadership, since the
Piaget believed that a child’s development is neither intrinsic (learning based on interest) or extrinsic (learning from an outside force, such as a parent). He believed that a child develops based on his or hers interactions in the environment (Mooney 2000). Piaget created four stages of cognitive development, some of which can be seen in the film “Cheaper by the Dozen”. A few examples of characters that display Piaget’s theory are the twins, who are in the preoperational stage and lack the concept of conservatism, and the mastermind, who is in the concrete operational stage and show's the concept of decentralism. These characters will have Piaget’s theory applied to them in the following paragraphs.

A developed relationship can be interpreted as one where the couple is interdependent, tolerant, and dedicated. Equity allows a relationship to efficiently develop in this manner. Judith Viorst illustrates a poem depicting a couple’s struggles and their sacrifices for the other in “True Love”. In many points of the poem, the couple is compromising for the other’s flaws in order to avoid unnecessary conflicts. “I do not resent watching the Green Bay Packers / Even though I am philosophically opposed to football” (Stanza 1) is an example of the wife forcing herself

Sheri L. Dew Stats “Neither man nor woman is perfect or complete without the other. Thus, no marriage or family, no ward or stake is likely to reach its full potential until husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, men and women work together in unity of purpose, respecting and relying upon each other's strengths. As a young adult, These Stories have allowed me to truly understand this idea of finding common ground. Essentially, finding common ground is defined as two different people having same interests. Individuals can find common ground and live as one human race, because When a tragedy happens we come together and when we have the same belief.

The phrase, “Opposites attract,” is often applied to relationships, but is only true to an extent. As a general rule, people tend to be more attracted to those who they perceive to share interests and experiences with. “Similarity breeds contentment” (Sternberg, 2013) and gives a foundation to build relationships on. We as humans want to be validated in where we stand; another person who shares things in common with us will likely provide that assurance. The real question lies in what those similarities should be. Is it similarities in appearance, values, opinions, interests, or any number of other factors that really matter? In her book entitled The Psychology of Love 101, Karen Sternberg states, “What matters most is similarity in those areas that are important to a person” (2013). If religion is central to a per...
