The books of 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel and 1 Kings introduce us to a society that have faith in God (the Lord of hosts), people believe that by being obedient to the will of God they could be protected from the enemy, their houses would be prosperous and their families would be free of diseases. Their men would be protected during war and the victory would be always on their side. However if they do not follow God’s plans then they will be in chaos. From the beginning of 1 Samuel to 1 Kings, we can see how the people who did not obey the commands of the Lord fell into crisis, their family members die and the men were defeated in war.
On 1 Samuel 2: 29 – 36, it is interesting that the Lord punished Eli even though he was not committing sin. We can see that in this society you have to judge everyone equally even if they are part of their own family. We know that Eli closed his ears to people’s complains about his sons Hophni and Phinebas. They were being greedy by taking people’s sacrifices and offers to God for their own. Just because of his sons, God announced Eli that there will not be more generation of his and that he will be humiliated. We can see in different chapters of the three books

mentioned before that the Lord always proclaims to end the generation of who ever does not do his will, and this is important because it tells us that preserving future generations is is very important. At the end of vs#39 we learned about the arrival of a faithful priest, who we later know as the name Samuel. We can see in 1 Samuel 7:3-17; that Samuel was a man of faith and good conduct that followed the will of the Lord and that treated people with justice. Samuel’s rejection to accept a physical king to govern the people of Israel shows how faithful he was to the Lord of the hosts. Also Samuel words on 1 Samuel 8: 11-18 are a prophecy about what is going to happen to Israel for the next kingship generations until King Salomon take place. The role of women in this society is basically to be a housewife.
Women are choose by the man and are submissive. They do accept her husband to have more than one wife. We can say that the women represent more a reproductive and sexual symbol, which we can see in 1 Samuel 1:2-3 and 1King 1:4. But women are also very important for the family and respected by their son we can see this in 1 Samuel 1:5 and 1 Kings 2:19. The interesting thing about women in this society was that the women were respected and treated good only during times when the Lord was protecting the people, but when God was not too happy with what people were doing or when the King was not following the will of the Lord,c we can see that women were mistreated as we can see in 2 Samuel13:
12-1.
Not only did Eliezer's faith in mankind change, his faith in god took a toll for the worse; "I was the accuser, God the accused I was alone, terribly alone in a world without God".
Elie seems to lose faith in God. “"Yisgadal, veyiskadash, shmey raba…May His name be celebrated and sanctified…" whispered my father. For the first time, I felt anger rising within me. Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank Him for?” (33) The God Elie once prayed and cried out to before was allowing his people to die in horrible ways. God, a being who is supposed to be loving and merciful was allowing them to die alongside millions of other
Women were just there to serve their husbands in anyway the men wanted. The first example was in the second creation story God only created man and then realized he needed a helper and then he created a woman with a rib from the man (2). It is saying that women were only really created to help and support men, also its implying that the man helped make the women so he gets control over her. In Genesis 3:16 God says to eve, “your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you,” she ate from the tree so he is punishing her (3). Women were just objects for the men to control, but then in the first creation story God created men and women equally (1). He created them together and to worship the land and populate it. So the two creation stories contradict each other because one the women are equal and in the other story they are completely separate. It gives two different outlooks on the way women were portrayed, but throughout the story they are portrayed more like the second creation story than the
Elie lost morality because of his selfish thoughts about his father and losing his faith. For example, when he left his father and couldn’t find him, he thought, “If only I couldn’t find him! If only I were relieved of this responsibility, I could use all my strength for my own survival, to take care
He gives us an image of the crowd of men at the camp celebrating and praising in God’s name. The crowd yelled out the words, “‘Blessed be the Name of the Eternal!’” (74), and Eliezer responds furiously with, “Why, but why should I bless Him? In every fiber I rebelled. Because he has had thousands of children burned in His pits? Because He kept six crematories working night and day, on Sundays and feast days?” (74). Eliezer, on that page, continues to list the faults in his world. He didn’t want to praise someone that has brought so many horrible things to the lives of thousands. He revolted against the name of God. He didn’t want to do anything with him at that
A woman was not seen as being equal to a man. This is clear in the laws dealing with marriage. Women were contractually obligated to remain with their husbands only, while their husbands were permitted to have a mistress or second wife. If a woman was caught with another man, she would be drowned (“The Code of Hammurabi”). Another thing that shows that women were not equal to men is the fact that they could be sold into slavery by their husbands at any time. Women did, however, have some rights such as the right to own property and the right to inherit and pass down that property. They also played very important roles in society. Some of these roles included shop owners, bakers, or scribes (Judge and Langdon,
Women did not have say on administrative level but on domestic level they had a great influence. Women were treated differently from men and also had different roles. However, Jesus treated men and women the same, and talked to foreign women. Nowadays, women still have great importance in the family domain. Women, now have a say on both level, however there is still a lot to be improved especially when it comes to equality.
He even witnesses sons sacrifice their fathers just to survive. Elie was not like that. He had a strong bond with his father. He depended on his father for support.
It can easily be seen that while men were considered to be the most powerful and wisest humans and gods, women had the power to significantly influence these men. From Uta-napishti's wife who convinced Uta-napishti to tell Gilgamesh about the plant that would make him young again to the examples mentioned above, several women were put in roles that had important effects on the men they encountered. Of course, this is not much different from the society we live in today. While many may believe that women have still not reached the point of true equality, it is hard to say that they are inferior and the significance of their roles in society is undeniable.
It is a Bible, a book. The Koran gives examples of the ways a woman needs to act in society. A woman is supposed to be there for her husband’s. A husband can marry multiple women and the woman may not be upset. A woman may have a dowry, but it is highly favored to give a portion of it to their husband
When the Bible was written in the early years of civilization, society held a severe prejudice towards women. This prejudice is reflected in the written word of the Bible. While these sexist ways may have been accepted by society at that time, they are definitely not appropriate today. I find it unbelievable that women are “supposed to live” by the same discriminatory fashion they were about two thousand years ago. According to Lu Ann Bransby in Woman: A Formula for Victorious Living, the Bible dictates how women should look, live, and even love.
The females were supposed to be very proper and real and more attention was put on the female 's virginity. The gender roles are determined by the sexuality and manliness and feminism of the individual. This shows how some of the roles are chosen for the males and females. Males and females who were talented in the center of their manliness and feminism appropriately were acclaimed. Fortunate females got to take over men 's roles in the tribe.
...f the divine world but the kings were in charge of vocalizing god’s wishes on earth. The most famous of these law codes was Hammurabi’s law code. The Hebrews tried to establish order by using Yahweh’s Ten Commandments and the Torah. Mesopotamian deities were hard to please and easily angered. The Mesopotamians constantly felt they were letting their gods down and usually didn’t even know the reason behind it. Hebrews had a much more forgiving god. Through texts like “The Book of Job”, it is apparent that Yahweh was a tough god but always forgiving and fair in the end. He had few demands of his people and all of them were ethical and easy to adhere to. As long as his devotees followed Yahweh’s laws, they were all capable of receiving his blessings. Through it all, it seemed that God and religion was at the center of every aspect of life in the ancient civilization.
In the creation, Eve was creating from “the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man” (Genesis 2). From this context one can see that this society believes that males were created first and women are created from men. The writer of the creation also makes the women seem like the ignorant one since she is the one that is tricked by the snake to consume the forbidden fruit. Thus, we start to see a society that belittle women. This is confirm when God punish Even by stating, “yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you” (Genesis 3). Furthermore, this line directly tells all readers that the wife is submissive to the husband and the husband has control over his wife. The key component of Genesis is that it gives a religious reasoning to why women are less superior to men. Genesis tells the Hebrew society that women are not equal to men because they are made from men, therefore, they have to be controlled by their husband or else they will get tricked like Eve. This time period uses religion to give reasoning to certain societal
The role of women in religious scripture dictates an inferior position in society. Beginning with the creation of Adam and then Eve, as his helpmate. Her purpose was that Adam would not be lonely. This origin provides the ground work for inequality of genders on the basis of religious scripture. The roles prescribed determined that women should be in a subordinate position to man. The female role and relationship with God is defined by the various books of the Old and New Testaments, the reported actions of Jesus Christ, and finally the Qur'an.
