Compare and Contrast A Withered Arm by Thomas Hardy and The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs In this essay I am going to explain the similarities and differences between 'The withered arm' and 'The monkeys paw'. Both of these texts were written before 1914 by two different people. Thomas Hardy wrote 'The withered arm' and W.W. Jacobs wrote 'A monkeys paw'. The withered arm is a short story about a milkmaid who had an affair with a high class farmer. When the farmer gets a new wife, the milkmaid becomes jealous. In a nightmare, the milkmaid who is called Rhoda Brooks sees the new wife she had been obsessing over for the past few days in a horrific apparition gloats over her new husband. In this nightmare Rhoda grabs the apparition and feels her arm as if it were real as she throws the spectre to the floor. The ghost is gone when she looks down. The farmers' new wife, the next day, finds a new mark on her forearm in the shape of a hand in the same place that Rhoda had grabbed the apparition. Rhoda and Gertrude, the farmers' wife soon become good friends as her arm becomes increasingly more serious. Eventually Gertrude persuades Rhoda to get her to take her to a conjurer called conjurer Trendle who is a local magic man. Eventually Rhoda takes her and conjurer Trendle gives her advice but does not give a solution to her trouble. They return home to the village. A year later after Rhoda and her son had left the village Gertrud's arm is becoming steadily worse and she is using all types of potions and magick on it but nothing seems to make it any worse so she goes to see conjurer Trendle for one last time. This time he gives her a solution, she must touch the neck of a recently hanged man while the body is... ... middle of paper ... ...ell in the rural setting of A withered arm. The time frame for each story is also different, the monkeys paw all takes place over a few weeks where as a withered arm has the story lasting for over a year. The time frame they are set in gives them a big difference as it distinguishes one from the other easily. I think that the story which is most striking out of these two has to be The monkeys paw. This story is a better length to not take a while to read and the plot seems better as a whole. Each character seems to have obviously different personalities that they use all the time and these are distinctly separate from the characters of a withered arm. I like the way that the ending of this story is a cliff hanging, we are not told what Herbert looks like after he was brought back to life we are just told about the sigh of dismay from Mr Whites wife.
In the book, The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, and the short story “The Monkey's Paw” by W.W. Jacobs, both authors would agree that in these stories, if you intervene with your destiny/fate, a bad outcome is sure to happen. In The Pearl, Kino finds the pearl of the world. Kino wants to sell the pearl, in return for money, but the pearl ends up bringing the opposite of prosperity and brings bad fortune. Also, In “The Monkey's Paw”, Mr.White also wishes for money, but as he is warned, terrible things come when u interrupt with your fate.
Both stories move with small biting twists . Both stories lead up to an extremely ironic, and arguably comical, conclusion. The two stories are gut wrenchingly suspenseful at times, from escaping a serial killer deep in a foreboding jungle, to planning to fight to the death as a result of a family feud. Both stories fill the reader with anxious, gut wrenching, edge of the seat, excitement. The other similarities are the foreshadowing contents within both stories that keep the reader guessing. Other times in both stories, the suspense is thickening within the paragraphs. ex; “ Rainsford had fought his way through the bush for two hours. ‘I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve,’ he said through tight teeth.” (Most Dangerous Game)
up the smell of that dreaded man. Then, all at once, he is floating beside her.
In conclusion, both of the stories where quite griping as they were so uniquely strange. Flannery O’Connor compared to other authors by using her unique writing style. Also, from judging from these two stories we can know that she uses the same style in most of her works. We can also know that her stories usually have a pattern in which her main characters lives are going all well and normal until some outside force usually some kind of a human being enters their life and completely disrupts it. Another remarkable writing style of her included, that her stories always had a tragic ending. The result of which was death for most part. Moreover, O’Connor made a heave use of foreshadowing and irony, which concluded to a mishap.
There are two stories this semester that have been particularly interesting. ‘Paul’s Case’ by Willa Cather is a turbulent story about Paul, a young man who eventually spirals downwards into his eventual suicide. ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a story about a woman forced into the resting cure by means of her husband until being alone with her thoughts drives her to insanity. At face value, these stories have vastly different plots and outcomes. How are you able to compare stories with different plots? When the ideas behind the stories are similar, it becomes possible. These two stories have many parallels which will be discussed in detail throughout this essay.
Overall, both of these stories are wonderful. They really get you engaged as a reader to understand the concept of the story and find the moral meaning of why the story is being told. These stories really helped me understand why it is so important for me to search for my meaning because I will never know where I am going if I don’t suffer and understand the bad things in life before receiving any good things in life. I would recommend any and every body to experience both of these magnificent stories because they are both extremely powerful and joyful to comprehend.
To begin with, despite the foundation of the two narratives being the same, there are still withstanding variations in the complete story. Predominantly,
