Poverty, every country experiences it, but it doesn’t affect every country the same. Some more developed countries might have certain policies in place to help people who are struggling to make ends meet, until they get back on their feet. It is more likely that less developed countries might not have any policies in place. I decided to compare poverty between India and Canada. They both are so opposite of each other. I knew that it would be interesting to see how both countries deal with the less fortunate.
The first thing I found extremely interesting and sad when researching India current situation regarding the poor, was that they only spend one percent of their GDP on health. That is astonishing. We all know that in order to provide for

Fifty percent of Indian people do not have proper shelter. More than seventy percent do not have access to toilets or clean water. We can imagine the huge amount of problems lack of sanitation can bring. How can people focus on trying to make money when they do not even know where they will lay their head down to sleep at night. Another interesting thing I learned was that a lot of India follows the caste system. The caste system is a class structure and it is determined by birth. It essentially locks into whatever situation you are born into. If you are born to a poor family, you will remain poor and if you are born to a rich family you will be rich. You have no room to improve your life economically. How can we get rid of poverty and improve people’s lives, if so many of them still believe in the old traditions they we born into. It seems to turn into a cycle that will be hard to break. Another big reason for the poverty in India comes from the lack of literacy especially in women. Our earning power is largely tied to our level of education, if people do not have access to that they cannot better their lives. I not only learned in previous courses but also from online research that the more educated a woman is the less likely …show more content…
The average income in Canada is 76,000 per year, that is a lot more than India. Compared to the 276 million people that live in poverty in India, Canada only has 4.9 million people who are living in poverty. While that is still a lot of people, that is a lot less than India. There seems to be a big wage gap as well for women in Canada. Canadian women earn seventy-two cents for every dollar earned by a man. That can lend a huge hand in the current poverty issues facing Canada. I thought we were breaking the glass ceiling but it seems we have a long way to go. While there is poverty in Canada it is not anywhere close to what India is experiencing. Canadians have access to government assistance and better access to jobs. In Canada they offer universal healthcare as well as access to public education. Those are two things India is lacking. Free healthcare means better health and the ability to work and provide for yourself. Canadians also have access to education, the more educated you are the more likely you are to excel in your future. What I found interesting was the fact that the poverty most Canadians experience is only temporary, about 60 percent of people only go through it for a short time. When I looked at India’s situation, the people living there seemed to deal with poverty their entire lives if they were born into poverty. Canada has a lot more policies in place to help people excel and better their
The article, “Education, poverty and schooling: a study of delhi slum dwellers”, highlights that “education positively influences poverty reduction, while poverty, or low income, adversely affects the quality and quantity of education”. This model is very much apparent in Jackie’s life. As she lacked formal education in the early stages of her life, she remained in the cycle of poverty even into her adulthood. Without the knowledge of how to change things and the inability of doing so, it is very much difficult, if not impossible, for her to get out of this infinite
Although poverty has minimized, it is still significant poverty which is characterized by a numerous amount of things. There are two types of poverty case and insular. “Case poverty is the farm family with the junk-filled yard and the dirty children playing in the bare dirt” (Galbraith 236)Case poverty is not irretraceable and usually caused if someone in the household experiences “ mental deficiency, bad health, inability to adapt to the discipline of industrial life, uncontrollable procreation, alcohol, some educational handicap unrelated to community shortcomings” (Galbraith 236).Case poverty is often blamed on the people for their shortcomings but on some levels can be to pinpoint one person's shortcomings that caused this poverty. Most modern poverty is insular and is caused by things people in this community cannot control. “The most important characteristic of insular poverty is forces, common to all members of the community, that restrain or prevent participation in economic life and increase rates of return.
Both nations are considered under developed and in relative poverty, but the founding differences that have expanded over time has them on separate sides of the disparity of poverty. The data we have access to has given us some light into seeing how the policies enacted after the American occupation is one of the main contributing factors as to why there is such a vast difference in each nation
Poverty, we hear about it every day. We hear about all the children in Africa, and other developing countries, but what about the countries that already have a stable government and are a first or second world country? It is scarce you hear about poverty in those countries, but it is as every bit as real, and devastating. "A lot of people find it difficult to appreciate that [poverty] is happening on their doorstep and perhaps don't really understand what it means.” -Mary Chandler, head of Save the Children charity. One country that you never would have thought of to have poverty is Wales. Wales has been impoverished for a few years, but the problem seems to be getting worse, and not better.
Poverty is a serious issue in Canada needs to be addressed promptly. Poverty is not simply about the lack of money an individual has; it is much more than that. The World Bank Organization defines poverty by stating that, “Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time”. In Canada, 14.9 percent of Canada’s population has low income as Statistics Canada reports, which is roughly about two million of Canadians in poverty or on the verge of poverty. In addition, according to an UNICEF survey, 13.3 percent of Canadian children live in poverty. If the government had started to provide efficient support to help decrease the rates of poverty, this would not have been such a significant issue in Canada. Even though the issue of poverty has always been affecting countries regardless of the efforts being made to fight against it, the government of Canada still needs to take charge and try to bring the percentage of poverty down to ensure that Canada is a suitable place to live. Therefore, due to the lack of support and social assistance from the government, poverty has drastically increased in Canada.
Poverty is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as a lack of something or when the quality of something is extremely low. All over the world, poverty is present. Charles Darwin once said in the Voyage of the Beagle: “if the misery of our poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions” (Charles). First Nations across Canada are being put into a position of poverty and the Canadian Government are to blame. The Canadian government is only worsening the problem, rather than helping our First Peoples. The First Nations are disconnecting them from their traditional way of living, not funding their given lifestyle and not raising any awareness of the issue of Aboriginal poverty. But why should Canadian’s help the Aboriginals?
isn't.45 percent of poverty in canada only lasts a year and a lot of canadians ranging from the
Poverty is not just an issue reserved for third world countries. Instead, poverty is a multifaceted issue that even the most developed nations must battle
Poverty is a significant threat to women’s equality. In Canada, more women live in poverty than men, and women’s experience of poverty can be harsher, and more prolonged. Women are often left to bear more burden of poverty, leading to ‘Feminization of poverty’. Through government policy women inequality has resulted in more women and children being left in poverty with no means of escaping. This paper will identify some key aspects of poverty for Canadian women. First, by identifying what poverty entails for Canadian women, and who is more likely to feel the brunt of it. Secondly the discussion of why women become more susceptible to poverty through government policy and programs. Followed by the effects that poverty on women plays in society. Lastly, how we can reduce these effects through social development and policy.
Poverty in Developing and Less Developed Countries The world includes less developed countries and developing countries. Less developed countries are countries considered to be poor and often contain many people who are in absolute poverty. Developing countries are countries like India, which are gaining in wealth. There are two types of poverty within the world.
In Canada, they plan on stopping poverty by following multiple steps that they have researched to find what the best ways would be. These steps include; quality education, access to health care, water and sanitation, economic security, and child participation. Many of the other countries are trying to follow these few steps as well but not being as successful. Countries that were in poverty such as China, has been slowly getting out of poverty as well by increasing their job opportunities which most countries are also doing. Canada and other countries goals are to get out of poverty the most people as possible.
...an HDI of 0.36. These discrepancies in levels of development have led to an exodus of people, from less developed areas to the areas that have been benefitted by development. This situation seems to depict that predicted by the Dependency theory in which the developed countries progressed due to the exploitation of peripheral nations; the same seems to be happening in India. The states that are wealthier are exploiting the poorer states. It would be difficult to imagine India having the economic status that it now has, if it was not for the terrible working conditions and wages at which the Indians are willing to work and the massive work force available in the country. Now that India has seen economic growth the government should start taking care of its citizens by implementing policies that protect the labor rights of the workforce.
...Taxing the rich more and the poor less, taxing methods need to be tailored to an individual’s financial bracket to ensure that upward social mobility becomes an absolute possibility. Building self-sufficient economies, projects to launch new industries and businesses will also need encouragement from the people. Education, it provides training to tomorrow’s workforce and helps the economy against the increase of poverty. Involvement of the media, the media has a lot of power when it comes down to grabbing society attention. With the media, people will become conscious of one of the major issues, poverty. Micro financing, offers financial services to individuals in developing nations who wish to run their own businesses. All these ideas should be implemented. It may seem unrealistic to try all 10 of them but giving some solutions a try would help the cycle of poverty
What is poverty? Well, according to Webster's Third New International Dictionary, poverty is "lack of money or material possessions; poor." Two-thirds of the world's population fits this definition. I know that many times we think of being poor as not being able to buy the car we want or take the trip we can only dream about. However, being poor, living in poverty, hits a lot lower than that. For example, a resident of the country of Chad will only bring in $100 each year. Since many people can make more than that in one week, some in one day, can you imagine having the feed a family of five or six, or even a family of two, on only $100 a year? These are the conditions that exist in poverty-stricken countries.
Also the outcomes of each are different in each case. Poverty varies from situation to another. Felling poor in Canada is different from living in poverty in Pakistan and India. Likewise there can be great differences between the rich and poor within the borders of a country. Some of the causes I believe of poverty
