From the early and mid 20th century, many significant events happened around the world. Many triggers led to wars between nations. This era, wars were not only involved one or two countries but almost every nation took a role to start the conflict. During this time, WW1 and WW2 occurred. Changes and continuities between the early and mid 20th century were alliances and militarism. From early to mid 20th century significant changes was militarism, many countries upgraded their weapons to dominate during warfare. For example, American government spent million of dollars on their research laboratories in hope that science will play a big role in their army. According from Doc E " In 1920, it was estimated that American industry was spending $20 million in about 300 research laboratories..." Around 20 million …show more content…
was spending on the 300 research laboratories in the 1920. The price of equipments continuing to rise meaning more money was being putting in to do the labs. As for me, this number is quite a lot, not to mention it was in the 1920, the equipments were of course cheaper, however 20 million is still a lot of money in this era. "As a percentage of U.S national income, industrial research expenditures increased spectacularly from 0.04% in 1920 to 0.87% in 1952."(doc E).
From 1920 to 1952, according to the U.S national income, industrial research payment went from 0.04% up to 0.87% meaning the cost of the industrial research increased up to 0.83%. The number went up pretty fast, within 30 years the expense went more than double of the amount. I think the number continue to rise because government and private companies were hoping that with their new and complex technology would profit them. In the early to mid 20th century, due to the cost of equipment, more and more money was being put into the laboratories causing the expense to rise, however it did not stop the Amercan to invest their money on the labs because they knew that science will be the key to help them in the army. Another change in militarism was Italy weapons, they took their weapon to another level to defeat their enemy, Ethiopia." The equipment for the build-up alone included 6000 machine guns, 2000 pieces of artillery, 595 tanks, and 150 aircraft. Before these arrived, the Italians had 3000 machine guns, 275 artillery pieces, 200 tanks, and 205 aircraft."
(Doc F) Knowing that weapons are important, Italy upgraded and built more of their weapons in order to defeat Ethiopia. It was a good idea for Italy to upgrade their weapons because weapons are important in warfares, however it was bad for the Ethiopia due to their poorly equipped. Because of militarism, Italy did not take any hesitations to spend their money to upgrade their weapons. One of continuities regarding World War I in the early to mid 20th century is alliance. Before and after the War, many countries in Europe allied with one another. For example, British, France, Russia, Italy and some other countries allied with one another to form Allied Powers. These countries agreed to cooperate with each other. If one country attacked one of the allied powers , all of these countries would stand up and fight back for it. I think the alliance is the main cause of WWI because if there wasn't alliance, there would be just the war between Serbia and Austria- Hungary, there wouldn't be involved so many nations into this stupid trigger. One of the continuities regarding WWI was alliance, alliance led to war between many countries. Although WWI is over, but alliance still continues. Another example of alliances was the League of Nation, specifically the failure of the league to stop the Second Italo-Ethiopian War.” But if the League be, limited in that in that sort of way it must be admitted that it could no longer be relied upon by itself to secure the peace of the world.” ( Doc D). The league of nation is an international organization was created to keep the world peace. It was purposely set up that all countries could be negotiated with one another rather than using force. However, it failed to stop and prevent the war due to its powerless and no armed forces. I think the league of nation was a good idea because it is better to prevent than stop the war once it is already started. The league was a great place to settle down any conflicts between two or more nations. With the idea of alliances, the League of Nation was created, but it was unable to stop the Second Italo- Ethiopian War because it had no power and no army. From early to mid 20th century was the era of conflicts and wars. Many factors led to unnecessary battles that involved almost every nation around world. During this time, loss was more than gain. Alliances and Militarism played out an important role that led to these changes and continuities.
World War Warfare was one of the greatest examples of technological advancement and strategic challenge, with the introduction of inventions such as the aircraft and the tank the battlefield transformed from attrition as scene in the early years of the war to decisive by the end of the war.
... deadlier more accurate weapons. Another technology was the telegraph which drastically increased communication leading to eventually leading to phones.
World War 1 was a deadly battle with millions dead, but do you ever wonder what caused world war 2? There are many causes for world war 2, but the item that caused an impact on the war the Treaty of Versailles. World war 1 started on August 1914 and ended on November 1918 it lasted for 4 years and 3 months. World War 2 lasted for 6 years with even more people dead and injured. So how did the versailles treaty help cause world war 2. The treaty of versailles punished Germany too harshly in four key ways: Territorial losses, showing how Germany is weak, and vulnerable, making the Germans pay, and the germans also wanted to destroy the treaty.
New advances in technology changed warfare in WW2. The change in technology since WW1 has produced such things as Atom Bomb, and new and improved sea and air warfare. New techniques had to be used because of technology, techniques such as 'mouseholing'. More people were killed because of technology, as more people died in WW2 than WW1.The technological advances in WW2 changed the battlefield completely as more deadly auxiliary was introduced.
Most of WWII took place half way through the 1940s, which had a reflective result on the majority of countries and citizens in Europe and Asia. The penalty of warfare lingered into the next part of the decade. Europe separated among the spheres of influence of the Soviet Union and the west foremost to the start of the Cold War. The 1940s also witnessed the premature early stages of new technologies including computers, nuclear power and jet propulsion, often first developed in tandem with the war effort, and later adapted and improved upon in the post-war era. The 1940s connects to the influence of contemporary America because it was the decade that changed so many things in life not only the government. In general our world as we knew it changed for the better and worse. The 1940s did the most to influence contemporary America because the U.S culture and society had changed a lot especially the role of women, many families were greatly impacted. The aspect of technology was completely revolutionized. During the decade the wealth rebounded from despair; big business improved its flawed public status; income and wages reached new heights; and dominant original sectors of the economy urbanized, particularly in the fabrication of buyer goods and armed forces hardware.
The first war to use significant technological advancement was World War I. Despite the introduction of trench warfare (in which troops dug bases many feet deep into the ground and fought only on the surface), the art of battle would forever be changed. There were many different types of weaponry advancements experienced in World War I. Machine guns were built twice more powerful than in the Civil War, firing up to 600 bullets a minute which was the equivalent of 250 riflemen. Artillery experienced a massive technological progression with the building of several thousands of powerful cannons with shells filled with ...
After the war, the American people made the change from "old" ways to "new" ways. Many factors, such as new technology, fundamentalism, new looks and church led to tension between the old and the new. The 1920s were a time of conflicting viewpoints between traditional behaviors and new and changing attitudes.
However, some, such as the French, released countries without a fight (p. 23-24). As the super powers began to come across other issues, the colonized countries began to seek independence. An important ordeal that occurred during the twentieth century was the Cold War. The Cold War enhanced the will for decolonization by driving a wedge between the different parts of the world.
One of the primary major world events that took place in this decade was World War I. This began in 1914 when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated. The U.S. didn’t get involved with this war, however, until 1917 and stayed involved until it’s ending in 1918. Increasing technology contributed heavily to the fatalities of this war with the inventions of deadly explosives, steel tanks, and poisonous gas (SF Timeline). This double front war for Germany was finally held at a standstill in November of 1918. A peace treaty was signed on June 28, 1919 at Versailles, France, ending the devastating four- year war in Europe. Another important world event that heavily affected the future of the world was The Bolshevik Revolution.
The 20th century brought about many changes, with several events molding society in the way we know of it today. With the Great Depression, World War 2 , and the Cold War, America faced many internal and external threats, that endangered the American way of life and forced the country to reshape it’s views to move past events that seemed, at the time, to be the lowest points.
The federal government issued thousands of contracts to make war goods. The largest beneficiaries of the government's largesse were the existing large corporations. "The big got bigger," Norton tells us, and the government "guaranteed profits in the form of cost-plus-fixed fee contracts, generous tax write-offs, and exemption from antitrust prosecution." Large universities received research contracts. Farming came to be dominated by "large-scale mechanized companies and farm co-ops" rather than family farms. The war "accelerated" this trend because "wealthy institutions were better able… to pay for expensive new machinery" (Norton 524 and 525).
In the twentieth century the transfer of technology from industrialized to the less industrialized is still happening. Yet it is happening a slightly different manner instead of being forced upon a nation it is being adapted to and for a nation. In the 1930s the United States made advancements in genetic –chemical technology.
During the Twentieth-Century, there were several dramatic economic changes and events. Going from being a complete agricultural nation to being an industrial super, enduring a great depression, having a civil rights movement and so many more, the 20th Century carries the names of some of the world’s most important events. Although history has flourished with all of its game changers, the solute most important event of the 1900’s was World War 2. The second world war, just decades after the first, “was the most widespread and deadliest war in history, involving more than 300 countries and resulting in more than 50 million military and civilian dead,” according to History.com. After World War I had ended, the peace settlement known as the Treaty of Versailles, created in 1919, had a purpose of obligating Germany to relinquish territories to Belgium, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. However these new territories were very susceptible to aggression from its neighboring countries, Germany and the Soviet Union. During this time there was still a great deal of tension between the countries/ territories. Italy and Japan viewed the treaty as a failure to acknowledge the status of the two’s world powers. Also Germans saw that rather than being defeated at the close of World War I, they were betrayed. With the economy being exceptionally deprived and a great deal of political instability, this set the stage for dictatorships that according to Twentieth-Century America “offered territorial expansion by military conquest as a way to redress old rivalries, dominate trade and gain access to raw materials”. Countries such as Japan began making use of propaganda’s stressing that Japans “greatness” must be reassured. Italy’s Fascist dictator, Benito Mus...
The 20th century introduced a number of changes, both externally and internally. For Britain, the Great War rudely awakened the empire to the horrors of war. A new cynicism developed and the old ideas of nobility and honor diminished with the loss of many lives. The “romantic nonsense” dissipated along with their innocence.
Now in the 20th century , the way to prove how strong one country is , is to check their military force and their ability of having advanced weapon . When the first battle ever started , swords , shield , bow and arrow was used and if there was a war in the 20th century no one can predict what might happen in the end but something that can be confirmed is a huge amount of people life will be taken away. Now more developed country will usually spend more money and invest into more advanced weapon because by having more advanced weapon the country will have have more power as the stronger the country is the more power it will have globally.
