John Smith went into the Virginia forest looking for goods and instead found the native Americans. John Smith came to the Virginia island with many hardships and lots of men. He wanted to find new land so when he returned to the colonies he could say he found better land than England. He was also captured by the tribe of Powhatan and beaten.
William Bradford was the one that went to the new Island for religious reasons. Brad Ford was a caring person who helped everyone out. He helped the families that mostly needed it. He believed that everyone should believe in a religion but it had to be free. William brad Ford was a Parisian and found the Native Americans.

He was the first man to promote a permanent settlement of America. William Bradford was a Puritan who was courageous and determined to set up a colony where citizens could worship freely. Although both of these men were two of America’s heroes, they had more differences than known.
William Bradford and Mary Rowlandson are very well known for their Puritan faith. They both have different journeys involving their faith and beliefs. However, Mary Rowlandson and William Bradford have the same religion and beliefs there are differences to compare and contrast. The Puritans religious ideas and their beliefs were influenced by the enlargement of the New England colonies, economically, politically, and socially.
The Chesapeake region of the colonies included Virginia, Maryland, the New Jerseys (both East and West) and Pennsylvania. In 1607, Jamestown, the first English colony in the New World (that is, the first to thrive and prosper), was founded by a group of 104 settlers to a peninsula along the James River. These settlers hoped to find gold, silver, a northwest passage to Asia, a cure for syphilis, or any other valuables they might take back to Europe and make a profit. Lead by Captain John Smith, who "outmaneuvered other members of the colony's ruling and took ruthlessly took charge" (Liberty Equality Power, p. 57), a few lucky members of the original voyage survived. These survivors turned to the local Powhatan Indians, who taught them the process of corn- and tobacco-growing. These staple-crops flourished throughout all five of these colonies.
After their original leader, Bartholomew Goznold, dies, John Smith takes up his leadership position. Determined to survive and keep the colony going, he starts learning and observing the ways of the Indians. He tried to learn their language as well and tried to break the language barrier. He took a big gamble and came into the Indian camp to speak to chief Powhatan to bargain for food. The purpose of the first few trips to Roanoke was to contact and establish friendly relations with native tribes in the area, fortify of the island, and search for an appropriate place for a permanent settlement. Another task included an attempt to leave a small force of men behind, while the ships returned to England for supplies, which were needed to finish fortifying the island, to continue the search for a permanent settlement sight, and to keep an English hold on the island. The effort failed due to the lack of supplies, weather conditions, and the strained relations with the native tribes, both violent and non-violent. Just when the situation was becoming dire, a ship came to their rescue and took many of the men back to England.
Each of these individuals did their part in making a historical effort on this time period. Their tributes to their communities helped form the nation we are still living in today. William Bradford was a natural born leader and assisted to better his colony in the best of his ability. He was very successful in his trials of teaching and learning as well. Jonathan Edwards was also authentically well in his purposes. From preaching impacting sermons regularly, to being recognized as one of the most prominent philosophers of all time, Edward’s left behind some very big shoes to fill. Bradford, leading his colony as governor in a more lenient matter, and Edward’s, was the stricter of the two. Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford and A Description of New England by John Smith are essentially irrelevant to one another in the way that each piece has a very different point of view. The author John Smith was a pilgrim who arrived in the Americas and wrote a description of the new land. William Bradford was also a pilgrim who arrived at Plymouth and wrote more about the realities of his personal journey. Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford gives us an insight into the endurance of the early settlers and the kind of pain they went through in order build the foundation of our great nation. They embarked on the new world and developed a colony from the ground up. However, there troubles started long before they even stepped foot on the land. With a strong hold on their religious beliefs, they continued their voyage to the new world even though there were questions about the safety of the vessel. They managed to work hard on the ship and make it to the new world, tired and hungry, only to learn that there was no rest to be found, but even more work.
God is presented as being all-powerful and all-knowing. He’s aware of all the shortcomings and misdeeds of humanity for every individual person. The existence of God and the afterlife are two questions that merely rely on the matter of faith and belief. Jonathan Edwards and Anne Bradstreet both have relatively similar religious beliefs; however, their individual view point on God could not be further aside from one another. Jonathan Edwards preaches a literal fear of an arbitrary, unpredictable and vengeful God (Baird). Anne Bradstreet, on the other hand, believed with human error in a loving, trustworthy God.(Baird) It is almost unimaginable that these two authors’ views are traced back to puritanism due to their vast differences.

Both theories believe that personality begins to develop from a young age and therefore occurrences in early life can have lasting impacts on the developmental of an individual. An individual’s social and psychological development is significantly influenced by early life and childhood experiences. The experiences an individual has as a child impacts on the development of social skills, social behaviours, morals and values of an individual.

There are many similarities and contrasts between John Smith and William Bradford. For instance, both Smith and Bradford wanted to leave England and write about their experiences in the New World. There are many great concepts or takeaways from this seminar I could use as an example, but none more important than taking chances or listening to your gut instincts. Jack DeWitt and Edwin Craig understood this idea more than most, as it pertained to their dreams and professional goals. Additionally, the passion and drive of both, DeWitt and Craig, would be the catalyst which in turn sparked the sensation of the Music City. As a Nashville native, I never truly understood the rich history or “roots” of the city around me. The Analytic Writing Continuum that Smith and Swain write about seems like an innovative and a valuable rubric. Grading papers takes a very long time to complete and this invention seems to work. Although the first chapter only covers the basis of this rubric, it seems efficient and versatile, as it covers a wide variety of writing, such as argumentative writing and narratives. I looked more into the AWC in chapter two and my first impression is that it resembles an AP rubric, that uses a 1-9 scale, instead of a 1-6 scale. However, the AWC seems to be more detailed in terms of what each constitutes a certain score. Even though the language is easy to understand and provides a “common language”, as Smith and Swain explain, the differences between each score is still a little ambiguous in my
