Each of the three ballets convey their story in a different way. They all have at least two performers and their chosen outfits are similar. The performers all had to have a good physique while staying balanced and be flexible.
The first ballet had a slower pace than the others.
The costumes were very extravagant and showy while staying in uniform with the rest of the group.
The second ballet had a lot going on. It was exciting to see the energy between the three main performers. Each of the showed various emotion throughout the setting.
The background performers dancing style had a smooth rhythm. Together all the dancers had a nice flow as if they were a river.
This ballet was done in a dramatic sense.
The third ballet had a faster dancing
style with the music set at roughly the same pace. There was an increased amount of physical contact between the two dancers. In contrast to the previous ballets, this contemporary ballet showed more skin. While the court ballet had its floor length dresses and all but their hands and heads covered, these two dancers both wore one pieces.
The Nutcracker, as shown in the San Jose theater, was the first professional dance performance I had ever been to and chose to go to because it was conveniently set up by the SCHS Performing Arts Program. With costumes that were elaborately designed to bring out the characteristics of each actor and actress, the overall mood of the performance was admirable. The set of the performance was spectacular; there were fog machines, smooth velvet couches, and accurate, bright lighting. Dancers were able to communicate to the audience without the usage of verbal sounds. They were able to efficiently tell a story through their facial expressions and their dramatic movements, keeping the attention of the audience throughout most of the show. There were elements that were incorporated into the dances that we had learned in our ballet unit, such as demi-plies, degages, and echappes, so it was much more interesting because we could somehow relate to the dancers.
The element that stood out the most to me was how effectively the music and the footwork corresponded. The best examples of this are seen through the dancers solos. Especially Albrecht's solo, his feet glide on the stage at the same tempo as the music. Similarly, Giselle's graceful footwork is truly amazing. I really like the similarities between the choreographed footwork and the music, it makes Giselle seem much more elegant and beautiful. This also seems to make the work look more put together and in sync because the dancers are dancing in harmony with the orchestra. The choreography by itself is amazing. Li’s passion for ballet shows on and off stage through his arabesques, flexibility, fouettés, grande jeté and pirouettes that were nothing less than perfection. I understood that becoming a dancer requires commitment, passion and having a great memory as there’s many moves, routines and ballet terms that you need to learn. When I was performing on stage, I felt free and that I could own the stage as it felt like it was my second home. I also felt complete within myself just as Li felt. To perform on stage, you need to be light and graceful along with connecting to the music using precise steps, poses and formal gestures. The film used dance, music, scenery, and costumes to portray a story characterised by Li’s dance. Classical ballet dancers require the utmost grace and I’ve found that you also need a tremendous level of concentration and memory. This portrays when his choreographer Ben Stevenson asked Li Cunxin to replace the main male role due to an injury on the day of the performance to memorise new dances and perform them in front of an enormous crowd. Many of my performances have been in a group where we all need to be in sync and work together. Ballet is a beautiful and romantic type of performance art. It originated in the Italian court systems in the 15th century (Jonas). Since its origination, ballet has undergone many changes and gained worldwide recognition. Filled with elaborate costumes, cheering audiences, lights, weightless movements and beauty; ballet is admired by many. On the magical stage ballerinas can become whoever they wan to be, and perform in a world of fantasy. For these reasons, children, especially little girls, all over the world dream of becoming ballerinas when they grow up. However, becoming a professional ballerina is an extremely difficult accomplishment, in which few will achieve (Kelso 1). The world of ballet may seem to be filled with glitz and glamor but, behind the curtain there is an entirely different story. There are extreme demands and pressures put on these young dancers to be very thin and nearly perfect. Some of which include body and weight demands, competition, and social pressures. These constant pressures can lead to a negative body-image and even debilitating eating disorders (Price and Pettijohn).
The theatre is full of young men and women. The gas lanterns dimly light the room and the silhouette of a figure can be seen in the shadows of the stage. As she emerges, she is like a dream: a tall, elegant body with a form fitting bodice and tutu. She is entrancing on her tiny pointe shoes as she floats across the stage. Love and passion fill the air as she moves in such a way that is almost magical. Ballet is an art form, out of many, that express a vast arrangement of emotions. Some ballet’s imitate tragic situations while others can emulate times of bliss. Two ballets that are completely different in content and style are “L’espirit de Bleu,” by Carolyn Carlson and The Concert by Jerome Robbins. “L’espirit de Bleu” is a movement from Carlson’s contemporary ballet Signes and The Concert is a comedic classical ballet by Robbins. The Concert and “L’espirit de Bleu are ballets that convey message, or invoke emotions, through choreographic nuances.
Dance is a part of every culture. Whether it is the fire dances of the native Hawaiians, or the Tango from Spain, dance is a part of every culture. This event is not an event I would usually attend. I am not into art of any kind except music. At first, there were two reasons I went to this performance.
The premier of The Rite of Spring, beginning with a bassoon solo but ending with a brawl, is one of the Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky’s most famous works. However, the reception of this composition was one that was fuelled by outrage from the audience watching from the seats of Paris's Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on the 29th of May 1913. Today, however, The Rite of Spring has become one of the most influential compositions, changing the history of the ballet. As the evening of the 29th of May came around, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées was packed.
Such as the use of pathways on stage. Since the dance group was so big it was hard for them to all fit on stage at one time, so what they did, which I thought was really creative, was that they split up the dancers in mini groups and some of them stayed on stage while others left to the wings or vice versa. I also noticed a lot of use of suspension throughout the dance. At one part, in particular, there was a group of six dancers that ran on stage in a staggered formation and on beat with the music, the three dancers in the back jumped in the air while the three in front collapsed and rolled onto the ground. I also really liked the use of tempo that this dance had.
However, in this ballet concert, the choreographer had designed the scenes to be more like a comedy. The movement of the sisters are more amusing than cruel. For example, when they pulled each other for being eager to dance with the prince, or when they tried to hurt and bully the Cinderella, these movements are not that cruel but amusing. Even the stepmother was drunk and danced comically in the prom scene. Moreover, the movements of all the girls who wanted their feet to fit in to the ballet shoe which Cinderella had dropped in the prom are also very funny. The dancers were technically proficient at their work. When the audience got a behind the scene peek during the performance, they got to explore the mechanics of the production of the dance. Strength, acrobatic flexibility, and athleticism, and balance all contribute to the effortless dancing and tricks done. The costumes of the dancers were well fitting in a sense. On the night of the DancePlus performance, I saw numerous little performances. There were six of them in total and the one I had most reactions and favors to is the last one of the first half, which is called Swampin. It was choreographed by John Evans with additional material by Oluwadamilare Ayoride, Jennifer Payan and surprisingly, the dancers. Usually what I would expect from a piece of dance performance is choreographers dominating the process of being creative on the grounds o f coming up dance moves. However, this time, it is nice to see how the dancer actually participating first hand in the creating process of the whole performance which would definitely benefit the quality of the dance, since the dancers would their own choreography
