In the stories of the Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami, there are events of magical realism and marxism that occur. In the Metamorphosis, Gregor had to adapt to his new environment and also deal with the financial crisis from his family. In the Elephant Vanishes, the people in the city, had to deal with the disappearance of the town’s symbol, the elephant. “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka was a book about a hardworking, traveling salesperson who worked relentlessly to get money for his family. The story mainly focuses on Gregor (the main character) and his metamorphosis. Before Gregor transformed into a huge bug, he worked everyday just to get money for his family, but most specifically his sister because he wanted her to get into violin school. “One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from disturbing dreams, he discovers in bed that he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug ( Kafka 3).” Gregor’s change to a bug was an event of magical realism. The Metamorphosis and Elephant Vanishes both include occasions of magical realism and marxism. In addition to that, magical realism happens in the beginning of both books and there is no reason to why it happened and how it happened. Gregor is working very hard to achieve money for his family, and in return he receives hatred and betrayal from his parents, boss, and sister. In the novel of the Elephant Vanishes, the people in the town are worried for their town’s symbol, but they soon forget about it and put it aside as if it were not important anymore. These two books connects to the real world and 3rd world countries we see in today. Most of us, realize what all the third-world countries have done for us, but then we become ungrateful and forget all they have done for us.
