I read two different short stories, both of which that had very valuable lessons and unique story lines. One short story did not interest me much, but the other one did. Both of these short stories had themes, they both had the theme of tradition and appearance. Even though both of these short stories are somewhat true, I found a great interest and value in The Necklace. The other short story was The Lottery which was the one that did not interest me much or give me any sense of value or a life lesson.
In the short story The Lottery tells about tradition in a village that have a lottery where the lottery culminates in a violent murder each year. It’s a strange ritual that suggests how dangerous traditions can be with certain religions, ethnicities,

She lives in an imaginary world in her head where her actual life does not match the ideal life she is living. She believes her beauty and charm make her worthy of greater things. She wears knock-off jewelry, clothes, and goes to high end parties, but dresses and acts like she is wealthy. The bliss of her evening at these parties were not achieved by angst, and the reality of her appearance is much different than it seems. The party is a conquest because for the first time, her appearance matches the reality of her life. Her wealth and class are simply illusions, and other people are easily deceived. I liked this short story because it relates to people today being concerned with their appearance and social class instead of their character and being blessed with what they have. I live by a certain quote every day by John Wooden he once said, “ Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while you reputation is merely what others think you …show more content…
As a reader I did not embrace The Lottery story for certain reasons. The Lottery explains a certain theme in the story which is tradition and how the tradition involves killing mostly innocent people, some guilty for no reason. Today there are no traditions like that and if there ever was, it would be rejected immediately. There would be some people who would love to kill innocent people or murder people they don’t like, but they would be thrown in prison. The Necklace short story tells a story about a girl wanting to be someone she is not, and that is a major issue today. There are many people who want to be someone they are not and even pretend to be someone they are not as well. I have learned to accept myself for who I am and to be blessed with what I have. I can only dream now and follow my dreams to become someone even better and to have a successful future for myself and to take care of my family and
The short story ‘The Lottery’ reveals a village of 300 that assemble for a lottery on June 27th every year. The lottery has been held this day for years and years, and has become a classic tradition. The lottery itself is holy to much of its residents, like Mr. Watson, who states that the village in the north is a pack of young crazy fools for removing the lottery. “Listening to the young folks, nothing’s good enough for them. Next thing you know, they’ll be wanti...
Shirley Jackson wrote many books in her life, but she was well known by people for her story “The Lottery” (Hicks). “The Lottery” was published on June 28, 1948, in the New Yorker magazine (Schilb). The winner of the lottery will stoned to death by the society. Although there is no main character in the story, the story develops within other important elements. There are some important elements of the story that develop the theme of the story: narrator and its point of view, symbolism, and main conflict. The story “The Lottery,” by Shirley Jackson, argues practicing a tradition without understanding the meaning of the practice is meaningless and dangerous.
“The Lottery” is a short story about an event that takes place every year in a small village of New England. When the author speaks of “the lottery” he is referencing the lottery of death; this is when the stoning of a village member must give up his or her life. The villagers gather at a designated area and perform a customary ritual which has been practiced for many years. The Lottery is a short story about a tradition that the villagers are fully loyal to and represents a behavior or idea that has been passed down from generation to generation, accepting and following a rule no matter how cruel or illogical it is. Friends and family become insignificant the moment it is time to stone the unlucky victim.
Tradition is huge in small towns and families and allows for unity through shared values, stories, and goals from one generation to the next. Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” carries that theme of tradition. The story follows a small town that performs the tradition of holding an annual lottery in which the winner gets stoned to death. It (tradition) is valued amongst human societies around the world, but the refusal of the villagers in “The Lottery” to let go of a terrifying long-lasting tradition suggests the negative consequences of blindly following these traditions such as violence and hypocrisy.
In “The Lottery”, written by Shirley Jackson in 1948, tone and symbolism are equally important elements in comprehending this eerie short story. This dark tale takes place in a small town of about 300 people during the summer. The writer begins by painting a picture of children playing, women gossiping, and men making small-talk of home and finances, putting the reader at ease with a tone of normality. The people of the town coalesce before the lottery conductor, named Mr. Summers, appears to begin the annual town ritual of drawing from a box which will result in the killing of one townsperson by stone throwing. It isn’t until the fateful conclusion when the reader comes to realize there is nothing normal about the
Shirley Jackson's “The Lottery” is a short story about the annual gathering of the villagers to conduct an ancient ritual. The ritual ends in the stoning of one of the residents of this small village. This murder functions under the guise of a sacrament that, at one time, served the purpose of ensuring a bountiful harvest. This original meaning, however, is lost over the years and generations of villagers. The loss of meaning has changed the nature and overall purpose of the lottery. This ritual is no longer a humble sacrifice that serves the purpose of securing the harvest but instead is a ceremony of violence and murder only existing for the pleasure found in this violence.
Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” is a chilling tale of a harsh ritualistic gathering conducted by people of a small village. The word lottery would typically remind someone of a drawing to win a cash prize. A better comparison to the story would be the lottery used to select troops for the Vietnam War; a lottery of death. Another would be the human sacrifices the Aztecs willingly made long ago.
The stories, “The Things they Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, have some similar characteristics and others are different. Keeping a tradition, however, in “The Things they Carried” the main character actually wakes up and changes how he is and becomes more realistic. Unlike “The lottery” where everyone is participating in a murder but not noticing what they are actually doing; to them it is a tradition. The settings are quite the opposite in these stories and also how the characters act. The theme of these stories are the same, however there are other elements that are different in these stories, such as their settings and characters.
The killer’s plan in the “Tell-Tale Heart” actually works and is able to hide his actions for a long time. While in “The Lottery” the town is peaceful and everyone is going through their daily lives. People seem excited for the lottery and seems that something positive will occur. But in the end for both of these stories bad things happen towards the people in the story. The killer has guilt get to him and he confesses that he is a murder. While in the lottery is actually a dark event that makes whoever wins becomes a sacrifice. The 2 themes both tell the story of death. They are both terrible stories, but tell people important themes. One is that you shouldn’t do something without understanding why you are doing it. Secondly is that guilt will always come back to haunt
